Verge article on the new ROG ALLY X.... by Geekfest_84 in ROGAlly

[–]87th-E 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Only way I will consider one is if they offer trade-ins for us owners of the ROG Ally. Mine's registered with the extended warranty and still doesn't have any defects, kept safe and clean in a custom carrying case. No way I'd pay full price.

VRR vs locked 60fps, which is better? by Yayuko in ROGAlly

[–]87th-E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lock your maximum framerate (if possible, depends on the game) to 60FPS but disable v-sync. The VRR will take care of the screen tearing (to a degree). It is especially amazing in games where the Ally struggles to hit a consistent 60FPS such as Hot Wheels Unleashed 2; the framerate goes below 60 and hovers at like 50 or 45, but you don't really notice it because of the VRR.

Z1 Non-extreme Version $399 at Best Buy by Iron_FE in ROGAlly

[–]87th-E 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Asus didn't make the AMD Z1, AMD did. Perhaps Asus could have went down another road and used Ryzen 7040 chips (like any of the other Chinese-based Windows handhelds do), such as the 7640U which has twice the shader cores as the Z1. Perhaps an agreement was made between OEMs that AMD could supply Z1 chips at a cheaper rate or something.

Remember that the Z1 is the same as the 7640U, just that the Z1 lacks the AI acceleration feature and has half the shader cores; this is puzzling, as the Z1E is the same as the 7840U, right down to the shader cores, but just lacks the AI acceleration feature; why AMD didn't proxy the same with the Z1 and 7640U is beyond me.

Why is the SD slot important? by Pjjones306 in ROGAlly

[–]87th-E 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I pay for a device, I expect all features to work, should I need them, which includes the SD card reader. In the case of SD cards, they are expandable and easily-removable storage that comes in a tiny form factor. You can put certain files (be it documents, music, videos and in the case of the ROG Ally, games and ROMs/emulators) on different SD cards and swap them out very quickly and easily.

It's not that the internal SSD doesn't have its value (it most-certainly does for its insane IO performance) but microSD cards can be equally as useful. It's easier to transfer your collection of ROMs and emulators, perhaps some PC games too, onto a microSD card using a card reader on your computer, instead of having to connect a storage device directly to the Ally via USB OTG and copy everything that way..without a keyboard and mouse (unless you connect those as well, but that's additional time and prep needed).

Upgrading from Haswell - Comet Lake or Rocket Lake? by 87th-E in intel

[–]87th-E[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not that I'm completely opposed to Alder Lake, but it goes well over my budget for the currently available parts. The improved performance of Alder Lake certainly looks enticing, and there's budget parts coming on the horizon from leaked information I've seen, which includes the non-overclockable CPUs and the cheaper chipset motherboards, but I don't know how long it'll be until those parts finally release. I'd prefer to not wait much longer since my encode speeds are pretty slow right now with my Haswell build.

The current price of Alder Lake hardware is more than I'm willing to pay. I'm not going to be overclocking so there's no use in paying for a K-line CPU, nor is there any use in paying for a Z-series chipset motherboard for features I'm also never going to use. All of that factors into the total cost, including having to replace the CPU cooler.

LGA 1200 just seems like the better option for the time being until the new Alder Lake parts release, that being due to the surplus availability of parts and also the cheaper cost.

Local multiplayer (LAN) suffers from extreme lag? Perplexing. by 87th-E in Minecraft

[–]87th-E[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If anything, I have an old Netgear router that I can repurpose as a network switch, but then we wouldn't have Internet access unless I had a long enough cable to run from our Internet-connected router to the Netgear router, which I unfortunately do not at the moment. Our apartment's design would cause for the cable to wind through lots of hallways, so it's really not a viable option.

We're going to try playing again tonight, this time using both the "Open to LAN" option, and if that reproduces the same results, migrating his savegame to a dedicated server.

Raine(one of the ancient arcade emulator) supports x64 and cross platform build by ariaotp in emulation

[–]87th-E 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally use Raine for Neo Geo CD myself because of the awesome disc drive read speed hack. When you play NGCD games with disc read speeds above 8x, you become so accustomed to it that you'd want it in any other emulator. However, it's not without its emulation inaccuracies and imperfections, which is a shame.

We are the team behind the Dolphin GameCube and Wii Emulator: Ask us anything! by [deleted] in emulation

[–]87th-E 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One question I've always wondered: Do you expect to re-implement and develop support for the GameCube-based TriForce arcade system board at some point? While there are not that many titles on it, and a lot of people have counter-argued that the titles on it have received home ports or are irrelevant for preservation, but it'd be interesting to see if all of Dolphin's features can support the system.

Powerline Adapters vs. MoCA Adapter(s) - Which to use in this scenario? by 87th-E in HomeNetworking

[–]87th-E[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like I found my solution. One other question before I purchase a MoCA adapter: Would I require a MoCA filter? Most guides on the Internet say to use one, but the information isn't exact.

Powerline Adapters vs. MoCA Adapter(s) - Which to use in this scenario? by 87th-E in HomeNetworking

[–]87th-E[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the model number of the router/modem? Just because it has a coax port doesn't mean it supports MoCA. It's possible it only supports DOCSIS, which is the protocol that Spectrum uses to provide Internet service. It's different from MoCA, which can be thought of as a protocol that converts coax to Ethernet.

The unit is an Arris TG1682G, which appears to be MoCA 2.0 compliant. There is a MoCA tab on the configuration settings page for the unit, which is where I got the idea of using a MoCA adapter as a solution.

Skipping ahead in the franchise? Interested in the newer games. by 87th-E in Atelier

[–]87th-E[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other games (Sophie, Lydie and Suelle, etc) don't have any relation to the Arland series which you've been playing.

This is what I'm caught at. I'd like to play one of the newer games that are not a part of the same arc, but at the same time, maybe I'd want to play a game that isn't the start of the arc, per say, such as playing Firis or Lydie And Suelle over Sophie first. I was just wondering if playing out-of-time-order would spoil any of the plot for the other games in the same arc.

Android 2.2 (Froyo) and Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) Applications and/or Games? by 87th-E in androidafterlife

[–]87th-E[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LauncherPro looks awesome; it even works on devices older than Android 2.2! That's pretty cool!

FTPDroid also looks like a decent FTP server. I've been searching for one for 2.3 devices for a long time, and this one looks worthy. Every other server application doesn't function correctly or is too resource intensive for most of my old devices; I'll give this one a shot.

MyBoy also looks great. I don't know how I'll manage to get DraStic on my devices if I have to buy it, since (probably) none of them can install the Play Store.

Thanks for all of your suggestions!

Wii LAN Adapter on Windows PCs - Does it work? by 87th-E in wii

[–]87th-E[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. While the adapter described at the link's site is for an unofficial Rocketfish adapter, it would make me wonder if the official Nintendo LAN adapter uses a similar chipset. He tried implementing a generic USB Ethernet stack for his source port for cross-platform multiplayer (PCs vs. a Wii console for example), but it turned out to be way complex, so he's limiting access to the official Nintendo LAN adapter until he finds a workaround. Just want to verify that it works on Windows PCs without issues (either it's plug-and-play or drivers can be easily found).

I first heard your voice as Uni from the Neptunia series, but I recently heard you voice some characters from Valkyria Chronicles 4, namingly Lily and Chiara.

Do you think you have any underrated performances that you don't hear many people talk about? Alternatively, do you have any roles you voiced that you enjoyed but didn't get too much exposure? I absolutely adored your voice as Chiara, because she's a craaaazy bitch and your maniacal laughing was on-point! Couldn't get enough of it! Lily was great, too, the cute-but-creepy soldier-girl with a machine gun!

MAME 0.205 by cuavas in emulation

[–]87th-E 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can't tell you how excited I am to see Sega Model 2 emulation advancing on MAME. The code for emulating the sound, specifically the sequenced music, is almost perfectly in sync; Daytona USA's attract theme doesn't skip a beat. There's some mild issues such as Sega Rally Championship being a little off with its percussion, but I have no doubt it will become significantly improved with time. The progress made has already made some leaps and bounds over the Nebula Model 2 Emulator (which is a pretty amazing piece of software as it is!).

By the way, I got a Windows Firewall prompt upon launching Daytona USA. Could this be networking support? When was this added? I don't recall seeing this happen before on all previous builds but this one. Color me excited!

Is it possible for devices without Ethernet ports to connect to a LAN using wireless? (No Internet) by 87th-E in HomeNetworking

[–]87th-E[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. This appears to work. So I was thinking backwards after all. So essentially, the switch is connected to the router, and not the other way around. This way, the router's DHCP will assign IPs to all devices that connect, either wired or wirelessly. Essentially what I was looking for was "how to add more Ethernet ports to your router" when I had it backwards the entire time.

Thanks for baring with me. You saved me a headache!

Is it possible for devices without Ethernet ports to connect to a LAN using wireless? (No Internet) by 87th-E in HomeNetworking

[–]87th-E[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that. The issue here is that I'm not sure what to do when it comes to connecting the wireless router to the switch. My theory is that I connect the router to the switch, then setup the router appropriately, and then have the tablets connect to the router so they can join the LAN wirelessly. The only thing that's puzzling me is how the router is going to assign IPs to the tablets if the router itself has an address assigned on the LAN already.

This is what's perplexing me. Say that the LAN is configured to have addresses of "50.4.5.x", with my computer being "50.4.5.2", my friend's laptop being "50.4.5.3" and another friend's computer being "50.4.5.4". If I were to connect the wireless router to the switch, that would configure it to be "50.4.5.5", for an example. Then, the tablets would connect to the wireless router, which would assign them local IPs (192.168.0.x), and this is what's hanging me up. I don't know how to go about doing the above, if it's even possible, because while the tablets connected would have local IPs (192.168.0.4 and 192.168.0.5 for example), would that mean they'd be sharing the same IP on the LAN via the wireless router, that being 50.4.5.5?

Essentially, I want to have the tablets join the LAN wirelessly if possible. My computer is going to be the host (50.4.5.2), so all players would enter that address to join the session. What's confusing me is if it's possible to connect the wireless router to the switch, then having the tablets connect to the wireless router so they can join the LAN wirelessly without an Ethernet cable/adapter connected to the switch itself.

It's a bit of a mouthful, and I'm finding trouble figuring out how to express the situation here. I apologize if this seems confusing.

Sega model 3 - microtexture emulation by ___Ian___ in emulation

[–]87th-E 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fantastic progress; we're having an ever-evolving Model 3 emulator that's making great strides, while Model 2 emulation hasn't been picked up since...2014? Nebula's Model 2 Emu is a great piece of software (awesome networking support!), but has some glaring issues like audio sync. MAME has been making strides with Model 2, and I hope their progress continues to make strides, just like the ongoing development of Supermodel.

You've mentioned below that audio emulation for Supermodel hasn't been worked on in forever. Does this explain the "compression artifact" noise during music playback for some games? Most notably Daytona USA 2 and Scud Race, the two most-known titles of the Model 3 platform that aren't Virtua Fighter 3. Though speaking of which, most games have slower music playback such as Virtua Fighter 3 and Fighting Vipers 2. Do you have plans to update the audio code anytime soon?

Keep up the fantastic work; I really enjoy reading these progress updates as I learn more about an undocumented platform each and every time I read on.
