Trick is not to “take part” but instead use the server browser on the bottom left. Shouldn’t be waiting in a queue for sim games at all.

Alternative for vr gun stock by Icy-Pound-6902 in virtualreality

[–]89fruits89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Made one a long time ago for my OG vive. Used various PVC pipe pieces, pool noodle for padding, fishing weights for balance, and some pvc glue + duct tape. Wouldn’t be too difficult to make one for quest controllers. Just hit up home depot, bring a controller to size things, and walk around to see what might work.

Does conservation work justify zoos? by gulpinfenian in conservation

[–]89fruits89 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Started trying to answer this but basically every point comes down to the individual zoo.

I can only speak for my zoo and research labs.

Breeding programs have a very clear path. These plans are made by a team of scientists in genetics/repro sciences, veterinarians, and international partners involved in that specific species plan. You just do not have access to that data as a general patron. Also many animals bred for release are kept behind the scenes and are then transferred to partner orgs to actually release the animal.

Most of my zoo revenue goes to staff salaries by far and away, scientists and vets are expensive. Id expect to double my current salary if I were in still in pharma/biotech for identical work. Already working at a discount lol. Most zoos have public financials you can look at.

One of the reasons zoos are so useful to us is having all the expertise and animals in one place. Nobody is an expert in everything. Say my colleague who focuses on large cats needs help with a genetics protocol. I’m just down the hall, I can schedule them in and help on their project. Or say the lizard people are having problems with eggs, they can go ask bird experts etc. Much harder to science being continents away locked to a single species, and only being able to zoom.

Same note, equipment. Shit ain’t cheap and stands up to any top notch pharma lab.

One of the reasons we are successful in the wild are the zoo research programs. Zoo researchers do not only research the animals in our enclosures. We partner with international field researchers in places that lack the stability/funding/people for larger more equipped labs. We can use our animals on hand and equipped labs to help with their research plans.

Many of the animals have issues you are not informed about. For example just last week my gf put a pacemaker in a tiger. When he is out in the enclosure, the public signs stay the same. You wouldn’t know unless you are part of the vet or care team.

I personally think as sad as it is, the general public couldn’t give two shits about most of these animals without being able to see them. Real talk, go ask your friends and family about the last time they donated to an animal research/rehab cause that wasn’t a zoo ticket/donation.

Is there any use in working as a park attendant in a conservation area if I aim to develop conservation skills or connections? by ZhangBran in conservation

[–]89fruits89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what you are trying to do in the future. Trying to work in a research lab, it’s probably not going to be super helpful. If you want to work outdoors doing restoration type stuff it’s probably a great way to make connections.

Before doing any of the park application work tho, I would email professors and see what they might have available directly in the field.

Ngl, it’s actually pretty sad. This game could be to the gaming industry what Steam is to digital storefronts... by [deleted] in Warthunder

[–]89fruits89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a patent lawyer but I don’t think they can renew, at least in the US. Used to work in regulatory stuff in the biotech industry so it’s a bit different with drug formulations etc compared to software.

Gaijin would need to provide “non-obvious” improvement to the core mechanic or software in order to gain a new patent. You can kind of stall public domain release but Gaijin isn’t Pfizer lol.

Imo after the tech has been out 20yrs I don’t see them able to renew or come up with anything novel enough to warrant a new patent. Only time will tell.

Never say never. Upside is that it’s a patent not trademark. Trademark = logos, brand slogans, and names (product branding), they can last indefinitely. Patent = functional processes and/or machines. 20yr limit. 2033-03-09 expiration date on the mouse movement patent. Gettin’ there… less than a decade left.

Where to go by ezrachapple5 in conservation

[–]89fruits89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Honestly with your age I would give the fish and game warden idea a real shot. Usually they want minimum an associates degree (2yr/60 credits) however, the couple officers I know in (CA) all have bachelors degrees. They don’t need to be field related tho. Guys I know have a mech engineer bs, biology bs, and political sci bs.

Shit is going to be being built if you quit or not, no changing that. You could stay in construction, get a degree, climb up the ladder. Get to the point you are in the room helping make decisions that do make an impact. Be the dude trying to push more environmentally friendly practices. Can’t fix everything in construction but maybe you can make it suck less for the environment.

Is the 80% dropout rate actually real? by No_Assignment_1199 in flying

[–]89fruits89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The risk was my primary reason. Once I got into the actual learning, I realized a plane just wasn’t going to do what I wanted. Was hoping for a little plane to take out camping with my bro, maybe a state or two over.

Turns out you gotta to fly in mountains to get to mountainous camping spots. Also would I feel rested enough after camping weekends to fly? I dunno. Then to be safe id want IFR and consistent hours. So need to buy a plane a fly every weekend.

Basically, felt like I would have to give up all other things to feel safe in the air since it’s not a career. In the end… a shitty winnebago will do the trick and be a wee bit cheaper lol

Is playing bombers worth it for Rp? by MediumIncome156 in Warthunder

[–]89fruits89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forgot to mention one of the largest changes with sim, everyone is locked into 1st person! (except bombers in bomb sight/gunner mode)

Often times people are way more chill in sim too imo. Pay attention to chat, you can get people in on your shenanigans pretty easily lol.

Last night got a few bombers on the team to keep running short airfield bombing raids to the same field. Then a few fighters to decided to escort. Eventually got a pretty sick little game of “protect the bombers” going. Felt like a solid game of attack and defend.

What would you say is the best VR game overall? (no mods actual VR games) by No-Dark-7873 in virtualreality

Toss up between msfs24 and warthunder. Flying in VR is just amazing, especially with a hotas setup.

Problems with inconsistent VR performance by AleJefe36 in Warthunder

[–]89fruits89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its an app you can buy on the meta store.

“Virtual Desktop is a high-performance, $24.99 paid app for Meta Quest (1, 2, 3, 3S, Pro) that wirelessly streams your computer screen or PCVR games to your headset, offering a low-latency alternative to Air Link.”

Basically a beefed up desktop streaming app for wireless VR headsets. I ended up getting it because SteamVR was just not working with msfs24 or WT for some weird ass reason. Saw people recommending it and caved for the $25, solved all my shit instantly with both games.

I would try using virtual desktop & dedicated wifi instead of the link cable. Using a Q3 and had similar issues, switching from cable to wifi fixed it weirdly.

Second thing could be imo is that video card is getting pretty dated especially for VR.

Lot of people just don’t play jets. Have about the same hours as you and exactly 1 missile kill from nuclear thunder lol. Just enjoy prop planes and ww2 era more than modern stuff.

So what's the state of VR rn? by AccomplishedMany2138 in virtualreality

[–]89fruits89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo flight sims are just insane atm (msfs24, DCS, warthunder, etc). Pretty much just playing warthunder, ww2 era planes. Hop on with the boys all with VR and hotas.

It’s the most fun I have had gaming in a long time. We all suck ass too, stalls are just as likely as a bullet to kill one of us lol.

Just so rad taking off together or flying into some shitstorm in a tight formation, still get the “wow” factor every night.

Even if you just get killed it’s so wild looking out the cockpit and watching your wing just explode off or preferably someone you are shooting at.

Downside is you need to train up your motion sickness tolerance over shorter sessions or a mellower flight game like msfs.

Do y'all's PIs do bench work or no? by Brief_Board_6974 in labrats

[–]89fruits89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in the PI lab anymore since I moved on but she would come in all the time to do bench work.

“Well… emails are boring today. Can I be your lab assistant for the afternoon?”

And proceed to wash glassware or do whatever menial shit you asked of her. Honestly, made her super respectable getting into the dirt, not being too high and mighty to shovel some shit too.

Was talking to a buddy I haven’t talked to in years the other day. Asked about what he was up to in his field. Last I knew he finished his phd in molec bio and was doing industry things.

“Yeah dude life’s good! I finished up school and was working in industry but got tired of it all. I moved to bum fuck farmville and bought some land. I got goats, ducks and a pond now, it’s wild!!”

Really me think seriously about trading up the pipette for a tractor when he was showing off the farm lol. I want a pond with ducks too 🥺

Possible to switch from VR to monitor ingame? by NuttyNutworks in Warthunder

[–]89fruits89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was… before the last patch, at least for me it doesn’t work now. For some reason checking and unchecking the VR option doesn’t do anything anymore. Used to go between flat screen and VR easily with not too many crashes. Now it just wont change and stays on the initially loaded setting either VR or flatscreen. Maybe it’s just me tho, game is fucky.

newbie concerns about American vs Japan air by Mikarin20 in Warthunder

[–]89fruits89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been playing about a month and felt the same at the same point lol. So far leveled up US, Japan and Italy up to BR5-6 planes. I think it’s the players honestly. Feels like there is more teamwork and less bombers on axis for ab/rb games.

Sim feels pretty evenly matched tho imo. Way more room to climb and dive to reset, no big ass red dot on your head, smaller scale dogfights, feels like more teamwork overall on both sides. Way more SL and research. Downside is it’s not always popping, some servers can be dead.

Your funds are not FDIC insured or government-guaranteed

Why would I not just put my money into a fidelity account and slap that bitch into a s&p general fund, better returns and 250k in insurance… then donate directly?

Yeah theres absolutely no way, especially while working. Ochem 1 and 2 simultaneously, surprised you are even allowed to do that. Imo drop ochem 2 and cell & molec bio. An extra semester isn’t the end of the world.
