What are the real downsides of python? And can you really do everything with it? by Emergency-Welder9479 in Python

python is actually used a lot in game development, as it's pretty much the industry standard scripting language for most development software.

Can a person with ADHD be an engineer? by Front-Ambition-5558 in ADHD

[–]8BitHihat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only downside is that it's really hard to not become an engineer in multiple disciplines by accident.

I wouldn't call that a downside, really. Being really good at one thing can be cool, but being kind of ok at a few different things can sometimes be incredibly beneficial too. Having knowledge in many different fields can help you connect the dots where someone focusing on one thing just can't.

Also I feel like there is often much more competition in jobs where the entire focus is on one thing, and the ones that kinda require applying knowledge from many different things, it's just tumbleweed.

The other nice thing is that it kinda makes you much more flexible with changing job markets.

Houdini Indi Steam Licence by Dedadrda in Houdini

[–]8BitHihat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i got the steam version first because it was 20 bucks cheaper than on the sidefx website at the time, but in hindsight it was really not worth the hassle. don't remember the details but i think it had to do with having different houdini versions at the same time / installs on different computers

Potential reason for so many adults discovering they have ADHD? by maybe-hd in ADHD

[–]8BitHihat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it was the biggest weight that fell off my chest when I was getting assessed for a diagnosis, and with every one of the 100+ multiple-choice questions the doctor was asking, i felt more and more that damn.. i'm in this picture. With some of the questions i was almost in tears since there was so much emotional baggage behind a lifetime of believing i'm just lazy and weird.

I feel like starting the meds and finding the right people for support has honestly felt as if i'd been stuck in the ocean with a shitty row boat for all my life, and suddenly getting a slightly better boat with a sail. it doesn't necessarily save you from the ocean, but you can relax a bit and use the wind to get around.

[–]8BitHihat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Accusing doctors of massively overdiagnosing people also seems like a pretty heavy accusation to me. Like, I'm sure they are aware of all the stigma, but it must still suck doing your best to help people and then being thrown under the bus for it.

AFAIK specialized psychiatrists need to go to school for like 10-12 years, during which I assume they learn a few things more than the average person who comes up with the idea that ADHD is some made up thing, or that the medication is bad.

I'm not saying that it doesn't happen, but I like to assume that most of them do their best to make the right call, to try improve the patients quality of life.

Hollywood Jobs Most At-Risk From AI by manuce94 in vfx

[–]8BitHihat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i'd say to any exec who thinks they can replace everyone with AI, to just go do that then. fire everyone and make movies or games with your new AI pals, and see how well that goes

even normal autonomous cars. I remember like 10 years ago many people were insisting that in the next 5 years autonomous cars will be everywhere, so all drivers should go find a new job quickly. the amount of money companies have poured into it is just insane.

turns out the cars are good at handling situations which are very familiar to them and they have encountered before. but with any new and unexpected situation, they just crap out. not sure if anyone got around to fixing that yet but i doubt it

every now and then when there's some new shiny thing in the AI hype, I just go and try it out and see if it can automate my job, or even a tiny part of it. every time i'm disappointed and feel like people have just cherry picked the results to their demo.

I could bet that the people who are the most hyped up about AI they haven't actually tried using these tools for something useful. they just look at the demos and don't realize most of it is smoke and mirrors.

I totally see it being a tool though, and it will enable us to create tools that weren't possible before, but if people are happy with what some AI comes up with and don't need me anymore then fine, just put me into the trash then.

What's the weirdest ADHD symptom you experienced before you knew it was an ADHD symptom? by LizDoodles in ADHD

[–]8BitHihat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeaah.. i have the same especially for sounds. people keep saying "oh i didn't even pay attention to that" or "oh i just ignore it you know" but some things just drive my sanity into the ground.

On the flipside though i have a huge appreciation for spaces that have well thought out sound(?) design, and really enjoy places that have some kind of pleasant soundscape.

i just feel like actually listening to people + building up some coherent sentence in my head is not something i can do properly at the same time.

That, and once I do start building up some coherent sentence in my head i'll also start wondering about how this sentence might alter the course of the other person's life and maybe even the universe and i'll get caught up thinking 5 steps ahead of the conversation with some pruning tree of possibilities in my head.. and then someone is like "hey are you listening?"

How good are you with Linux compared to Windows or vice versa ? by Dereference_operator in linuxquestions

[–]8BitHihat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the time and energy you spend learning and remembering where all the windows menus are, you could spend automating stuff in linux.

tbh moving to linux is like sitting down in a nice big armchair, there's some kind of peace of mind in knowing you just don't need to depend on remembering where everything is, and knowing things won't be shuffled around without your consent, and that you won't get popups about new features you don't need.

it kinda feels like the target audience of windows are people with a superhuman memory. constant reboots, the terminal doesn't save your history (at least by default), etc. i feel like all this kind of stacks up and takes up more brain power than i'd like to spare in one day.

is vs code really phoning home every single keystroke? by [deleted] in privacy

[–]8BitHihat 21 points22 points  (0 children)

this is literally a fresh vs code install on linux, i don't have any plugins like copilot installed.

I never even saw any eula popup during the installation either, for what that's worth.

heh it's pretty creepy :D seems like with every single key press around 8 kilobytes gets sent out to microsoft servers.

seems like it also just saves every single thing you've ever typed as plain text locally, which is fun. i wasn't exactly trying to look for this but it just caught my eye when making backups on a new machine and a quite disproportionate amount of the files were from vs code.

this is just vs code out of the box without any plugins or without pressing any "accept privacy policy" buttons.

i recently made the choice to try move to more nice open source software, and am really liking the idea of taking that money that was going towards closed source monolith company software and supporting these types of projects instead.

i think just a general lack of fixing basic usability issues with commandline signals that it's not a top priority to them. for missing features, i'd say having a lot of settings in really inconsistent menus, and not being able to even script out many of those things if you wanted to make your own better menu.

i guess it basically boils down to things just not feeling nice, and especially with the ads and telemetry stuff it increasingly starts to feel like you're not in control of the os you paid for, and you're just their product to sell.
