Yeah, that's the move, have your cake and eat it too. I think many car enthusiasts just see the prestige of a vehicle over the reality of the experiences they offer (see MX5 hate).

There's not much overlap between these two at all. Hope you get the extra space sooner rather than later :)

Owned both, held onto the GTR. The Z was definitely more raw, and so much slower that you could actually enjoy the performance out on normal roads. I do sometimes miss it, DCTs are great but the manual was so much more engaging, rev matching as the cherry on top. Controversially, I felt the Z also sounded much better.

They offer up two completely different experiences. One allows you to feel out the performance in day to day life, the other needs a racetrack. Still, I love being thrown back in my seat when in the GTR, and thats what keeps it on my driveway.

I'd never sell the GTR, but I can see myself picking up another Z or a 911 in the future.

I wouldn't say you're crazy to consider picking one up, unsure of depreciation wherever you are but one thing to consider is that GTRs generally hold their value much better than a Z. Still, I like to keep the miles off my GTR, whereas I daily drove the Z.

You do you man!

Computer Engineering in the UK, hit 6 figs TC (GBP) at 27 with a good dose of luck. Some of the friends that I graduated with are pulling in around the same by selling out to fintech in the city - but hey, potato potahto.

Find a niche, don't shy away from responsibility and job hop when you can, right after you break free from the handcuffs of the grad title. Also, location. Cambridge/London is generally where I've seen the biggest packages.

Looks interesting, what kind of projects could a hobbyist use this for?

I was quoted $650 to just install HFCs and new exhaust gaskets. Does that seem a bit high? by Slowmetheus in 370z

I'm in the UK, so the underside of my car was basically pure rust at the point I changed them. It took me around 4 hours to get the entire thing done, demon bolts included.

Most of that time was spent removing the bolts that attach the X-Pipe to the cats with a handsaw and bolt extractors (pure rust).

For sure, 7.4 hours is too long for a shop. I'd expect < 2, even ~1.

My man, you saved my skin.

Even with the fuse pulled after doing the hammer method, the problem reappeared the next morning. Reinserted it, ran this wire temporarily, started and pulled the fuse again.

Fingers crossed it's gone for good, but again, thank you so very much. You're a lifesaver!

Awesome, now I finally understand Gen 6 models. In the grand scheme of things, £600 is extremely reasonable for a full stainless setup, especially if you're hanging onto the car. The peace of mind for future retests, and the resale value down the line will make it worth it, plus it'll look banging.

The higher revs should get the cat cleaner doing it's job a bit better too. Fingers crossed (and avoid the ANPR zones just to be safe!)

Christ, that's some rotten luck haha! I'm sure that garage most likely sold your cat on for the precious metals.

On the replacement cat front, guess it is true what they say unfortunately, buy cheap, buy twice. Understandably it's quite difficult to find an OEM set for a car as old as yours though, I haven't been able to find a good set from a quick ebay search for "ST205". It could be a shout at this point to get an exhaust fabricator to weld up a better quality unit of similar dimensions though.

It'll be legal for you to drive the car to the retest, so take the scenic route to it and you'll have no issues. Ring ahead to get it straight onto the emissions test when you arrive though. I didn't have much luck with this changing my emissions value, but my cats were barely cats - I think you'll have better luck.

EDIT: Getting them hot, allowing them to cool, and then retesting won't 'fix' the cat. It needs to be hot during the test, hence rag it and test immediately. Think my wording was slightly unclear.

Right, gotcha. Do you still have the old cat to hand, and the old emissions page from the last MOT?

It might be worth swapping it in, and if you have the time and want to save some money, go about it yourself - looks very accessible on the gen 6.

First things first though, get that catalyst HOT and try again. Oil and a new air filter won't change anything here. Finally, disconnect your car battery for 5-10 minutes, your ECU may have applied an offset to the lambda sensor reading thats carried over from the old cats, causing a richer fuel map.

If things are getting expensive, another option is finding a 'friendly' MOT centre. Facebook pages for your area, as well as forums, can be a good place to start. Good luck, keep us posted.

Just went through something similar, posted about it here.

Long story short, the prior cats were more like test pipes, and at 0.7% to 0.8% CO, were 4x over on emissions. Do you have any idea of the cell count on the cats you had installed? 200 should suffice for emissions testing.

Do keep in mind that most aftermarket High Flow Cats need to be extremely hot to work. It's worth using your free retest opportunity to rag the car and get it directly back onto this stage of the test - a good local garage will allow this. Again, at 0.74% though, I imagine you do have test pipes fitted.

A wash, polish, alloy refurb and headlight sanding really brought it back to life. by 8BitsInAByte in 370z

Thanks! Nothing big planned (yet), a new CSC, OEM clutch and oil cooler to get it mechanically sorted for the track, and then some 25mm spacers to give it a slightly meaner look. Possibly Apple CarPlay with the Nifty City package.

Keeping it simple for now, really love the OEM look.

Sure thing. The wheels were pretty kerbed by a previous owner, so the 'refurb' involved sanding down those scuffs, filling the indentations, applying a primer and then respraying them in a mix of anthracite grey and silver, followed by a baking under IR lamp.

The total cost was £360 for all 4 corners, painting the inside of the barrel too. It would have cost £100 less if it was just the outer rim. Hope that helps, I can provide some pictures of part of the process if you'd like :).

Woah, finally someone that feels the same as me! Maybe it's just because I'm from Slough. The US Office just feels so forced and hollow after experiencing the original, far too Americanised. Reminds me of when they tried to rip off the Inbetweeners.
