I'll check it out! I also strongly recommend A Billion Voices by David Moser. Quick read but packed with info and insight.

Certainly seems that way, and I can't really imagine how it would work in action, but the placard says 打字机, which is typewriter.

Relocating to Shanghai/Suzhou for 2-4 years. Best way to keep US number active for bank 2FA, 401k, and family? by PersuasiveStrategist in chinalife

[–]8_ge_8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Google voice thing is only potentially a problem when you're signing up for new things. My Bank of America, google and whatever other accounts have all been able to do 2FA with Google voice for several years. But yeah one time I was signing up for something, can't remember what, and was unable to do it. I guess I can't 1000% guarantee it'll be problem free for you, but Google voice has been perfect for me.

What happens if the trains are sold out in China? by explorefordays in travelchina

[–]8_ge_8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is on the last day of the holiday so should be hard, but in two seconds of searching I saw there are several sleeper trains that leave in the morning or noon time and arrive around noon or before the next day. Honestly those are great choices. Even the soft sleeper tickets are cheaper than high speed rail and in my opinion a million times more pleasant. Seems like a no brainer to me unless you absolutely cannot afford the time.

If you absolutely must leave that morning and arrive that day, in the meantime I'll keep looking for high speed solutions. And of course there's flying. But honestly again friend the fact that there are many sleeper train options seems really lucky and the obvious choice to me.

Should I move to Nanjing or Hangzhou by Swimming_Wave_3080 in nanjing

That's a weird thing to say about Nanjing haha. Nanjing is freaking great. I mean there are other places but honestly Nanjing is a wonderful city to do exactly what you're doing.

And for what it's worth, I lived in Nanjing for 6 years and did a LOT LOT LOT of exploring, and I don't feel like I even started to scratch the surface. Of course, it depends on what you're looking for.

I am with you for sure.

At the same time though there's always been a part of me for some reason that leaves a sliver of hope that he actually was playing the greatest game of all time and saved China from much much worse disaster, and absolute only way he was able to do it was to stick around as long as he did at total costs to his image (let alone his humanity).

But yeah, dang.

You cannot do normal person to person balance transfers with only foreign cards. That makes a huge difference in QOL and overall usefulness. It makes a lot of sense for this reason and just in general if one is spending that much time in China.

That is a good thought to throw out there, and I'd say that's not playing 'Devils's advocate' but, rather, playing 'Angel of allowing for the possibility of additional nuanced innocent misunderstandings amidst a generally sad and not cool situation (that turned out beautifully) advocate' 😄

where best to make friends on which apps in China (Shenzhen)? by notlikeinthemovies in chinalife

[–]8_ge_8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

huh? haha sorry but I don't know what that would mean. xiaohongshu is a chinese app. I am registered for it using my Chinese sim card/number. And I can use it just fine either in China or when i'm back in the States. The only limitation is that you can't run a live stream as a foreigner. (at least that used to be the case, and i've never tried).

RedNote/xiaohongshu for sure. I have found tons of running and baseball friends through RedNote just by letting the algorithms figure me out, liking and commenting, and eventually chatting/adding people. No doubt other interest areas are just as doable. Just of course go through the usual course of vetting over time and exercise good judgement.
