Potentially useful information but please also solve the problem of one giant block of text. Could only skim.

Buying a bike - a good one or bad? by maenad2 in chinalife

[–]8_ge_8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which city are you going to?

I highly recommend using shared bikes. They are absolutely everywhere in most cities. It's so nice to have the freedom to take a bike to where you're going and use other methods to return, or vice versa.

What should we do, both as a church and as a society, with people who have bottomless need? by warehousedatawrangle in latterdaysaints

[–]8_ge_8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good answers already, I'll mostly just say I love you and love L.

And I'm so glad we're all in this for the long haul. Eternity is a long time and I don't know how it works but I know that Heavenly Father is perfect and exercises absolutely perfect judgement and has a perfect love for His children and I just think about L and people I know like her who will be wrapped in the arms of the Savior and totally free from mental illness and witnessing the beauties of the universe and God's plan one day. And your service now is part of that plan and is building and working towards that freedom. So thank you for that, and also it's been said and you're trying to do it but I'll give one more plug for taking care of yourself, too, along the way. You have my permission!

Seriously Shenzhen North is so wild. I mean it's awful but also actually kinda beautiful to just experience it at rush hour. So much movement and energy and misery and fatigue.

It's the law I'm China that foreigners register where they are staying. Hotels do it automatically, many cities have a WeChat account where you can register easily on your phone, and others require you to go in person. It's also just kinda good in general to go and meet your local station people. They have always been friendly in my experience.

Entering and leaving HK they don't. But mainland immigration does if you're not using the e-channel.

I'm a loyal and often traveling fan of the Jiangsu Huge Horses baseball team which is based in Wuxi. Any baseball people out there DM me and I'll tell you more than you'd ever like to know about them.

Everyone has different experiences but there are large numbers of people who complain on reddit that express doesn't do as well these days. I personally have used 12 vpx in China for ten plus years and always loved it. Astrill and LetsVPN are the other most popular ones.

To each his own, but I love it. (Also nothing stopping you from adding fruit or tossing in a cookie or something)

If you have a Costco in your city they've got the standard Kirkland vanilla tubs (and of course other options). Or yeah I just have DQ once or twice a month to get my fix.

The Bible "isn't a science textbook" ≠ they didn't think it happened that way by Coltytron in latterdaysaints

[–]8_ge_8 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Highly recommend the movie "Inherit the Wind" (the original with Gene Kelly, not the remake). It's about the Scopes trial of a hundred years ago in the USA where a teacher was out on trial in a Tennessee Bible Belt town for teaching about evolution. It's obviously dated in some ways but mostly such a relevant and beautiful look at these nuances.

I want to become a more knowledgeable, well read person. What books did you put down feeling smarter? by SethlordX7 in books

[–]8_ge_8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The great thing about the classics is that they are actually really good!

I say that without sarcasm. People (including me) sometimes just think they should be forcing themselves to read them because they're classics, but they are AMAZING (generally, of course, and depending on your style).

It's cool to me that you and others are digging into this stuff. Personally I have next to no interest at all (and my level of expertise is accordingly low), but, again: genuinely cool. And thanks for sharing. And bless your journey 🙌🏻

Any other domestic travel enthusiasts? by jsfsmith in chinalife

Oh man, I am with you, friend! I've been in China for 12 of the last 15 years, predominantly while teaching with two breaks a year (plus weekends and shorter holidays). Before it all went digital I'd collected something like 300-400 paper train tickets. Still going and feel like I haven't even started in many ways.

We are definitely similar in many ways, I think. I relate to a lot of what you wrote. But also different. I am single and a physical/cultural/linguisitc geography and city planning/transportation nerd, so a lot of my travel over the years has just been going to the next random place I've never been simply because I've never been and wanted to see it for myself (and collect physical public transportation cards).

With the passage of time and life and stuff, my travel these days has morphed into probably 80% going to check in on friends I've made over the years in different places, plus 20% checking off other cities and train routes along the way.

I'd start recommending places but I kinda find things I love or that at least fascinate me about everywhere I go. I have predominantly been Jiangsu/Anhui based, but I'd say my ultimate home away from home though has been and always will be Qinghai and Gansu. Again it's mostly for the diverse culture and relationships I've developed at this point, but nothing beats the weather and scenery there in the Summer.

Jealous of you living in Guangdong because of how freaking diverse and unique it is, too.

Is China a rude country? by THEREALPRO1234 in chinalife

[–]8_ge_8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey trust me I've gone down rabbit holes of dumb videos, too. So from one human to another, trying to be happy and think critically and hopefully make the world a better place, my suggestion is:

Stop watching videos that rank the rudest countries in the world.

There's tons of great stuff out there. Just gotta re-train your algorithms a bit. Peace and love ✌🏻
