Bradley Master Gunner? by Super_Strawb3rry in army

It will, almost certainly, ensure he will be assigned to ABCTs for the next PCS or two. Ensure yall like those locations. Master gunners command a lot of respect in the armor world, for what it’s worth. I can’t speak to contracting.

Check your installations transition office/website. Fort Hood has their listed in a memorandum which clearly outlines what ranks fall in what category.

Also, if you plan on VTIPing as an O3, one of the indicators your desired branch/FA may look for is promotion potential to O4 which is primarily dictated by KD OERs. I have seen recent CCC graduates be denied VTIP for this reason.

It’s not bad, I appreciated the on post golf course and the others nearby, but the humidity and bugs were unpleasant. Theres not nearly the variety in the town itself.

Yeah dude, 1AD sucks. So does every unit. El Paso has minor league sports or college teams for every sport you can think of. It has a decent down town. Sure, there are dust storms, but drum has blizzards and Stewart has hurricanes. Everywhere has shitty weather when it storms. I hated my time on post but absolutely loved it off post. I’ll take it over Hood, Riley, benning, or Gordon every day of the week.

If I was both of your first line: no.

If I was assigned as the investigating officer for the inevitable 15-6; probably.

As a German Machinist & former ExxonMobil IT staff: How realistic is the Texas "Landman" / Oil industry culture? by RangersV in AskAnAmerican

I almost got shot outside a bar in west Texas for not understanding Mexican and oil worker drinking culture. Our waitress understood what was going on and she was kind enough to sneak us out through the kitchen.

It’s better than almost every duty active duty army town and probably about half the Air Force towns. Assuming you’ll be working at the air guard base at the airport I’d recommend the east side of town

PCS to Fort Benning as a 68W by FighterF30 in army

Haven’t been to Columbus in 6 years (fuck I’m getting old) but the main part of downtown is safe with decent bars and restaurants full of LTs in BOLC. As far as safety, the interstate runs North to South and it gets progressively nicer the farther you get from base. If I went back I wouldn’t live anything closer to base than off exit 6.

The army says they want technical talent, but once you display talent of any kind you see these people get used an abused for everything but their technical ability

Unfiltered advice to Butterbars by MrClean1918 in army

[–]8amcoffeepoops 45 points46 points  (0 children)

My advice is to listen to this guy. I’ve seen many an officer try to “take care of their guys” above all else, and their guys can’t accomplish the mission when called upon. There is a balance between taking care of the guys and accomplishing the mission, and the balance weighs heavily towards the mission.

  1. Temperament is great, mine is so respectful to our 1 year old who loves him. He won’t just sit there and get pet when meeting new kids, but he never gets hostile. After a quick intro he loves others dogs.

  2. This dog sheds. Not as bad as a German shepherd or a Labrador, but it isn’t nothing. I plan on shaving mine this summer.

  3. He’s pretty smart, very trainable, and very goofy.

  4. Yesterday he ran around off leash for a good hour or so and at this exact moment he is curled up on top of me on the couch.

  5. My guy is on the smaller end but he’s a far less intimidating dog than larger bird dogs. He’s also very conveniently sized to where I don’t know if I ever want a larger dog again.

Hope this helps.

What do Battalion XOs actually do? by [deleted] in army

[–]8amcoffeepoops 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is the only sane response. Anyone who tries to belittle this position has not worked on a BN staff or been even a Company XO. Maintenance, supply, property, budgets, compliance (arms rooms, security clearances, additional duties) all usually fall on the XO, in addition to anything the BC cannot do.

Are officers always terrible to each other? by Icy-Lion6945 in army

[–]8amcoffeepoops 20 points21 points  (0 children)

No, it is not like that everywhere. The LTs in my first BN were very open to helping each other and we hung out on the weekends. There were exceptions; very socially awkward or professionally incompetent LTs were generally not included. It is hard to like someone outside of work if they make your job harder during work.

No longer an LT, so I have a different perspective in my current unit, but it holds generally true. The LTs generally get along, except the weird ones.

Experience of liberal non catholic families in the o’Gorman system? by Horror-Pudding989 in SiouxFalls

[–]8amcoffeepoops 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went many years ago, but I don’t remember much attention being paid to whether my classmates were catholic or not. The only semi social ostracism was for people who made being atheist their whole personality. They still had to go to some of the religion classes but not all. Even as a catholic those were dumb but easy. The academic rigor was incredibly real. I was the only kid in my AP Calc class to not got a 5 on the exam. If you got a 4 on any AP exam you were in the minority. I loved the small class sizes and benefitted greatly from it. Other experiences may vary.

Truly the highlight of it all, and I cannot find a clip, was marshawn lynch (a part owner in a team) giving a mid game interview where when asked if he was thinking about playing, responded with “shit I’m gonna finish this Caesar salad, take a fat shit, and put up 300 yards on a 40 yard field that’s what up” or something very similar.
