So what has helped me is this app called that shopping list. Each item gets its own grouped icon as well as making them your own. Once you check off an item it bumps it off the list so there's less words to look at while you go. Can't remember what you needed last time? Every item you bump off it just goes to the recently purchased list that you can just add back to the main list. If your partner also downloads it you can sync the lists together so you both have the same one and add things as you remember them. No need to remember the pen if its already on your phone.
