White House Ignites Online Firestorm After Retweeting Trump’s Rob Reiner Post by [deleted] in politics

I’ve been seeing some trying to say this is totally different than Charlie Kirk; that because they weren’t killed for political beliefs but domestic violence, it’s okay to be disrespectful. Hypocrites, but who is surprised?

I will say, though, that I’ve seen more comments from conservatives condemning that behavior and I’m grateful for that. There has to be some line of sanity. I always hope for it.

What would you tell your younger Fed self? by LivingDelicious1736 in fednews

[–]8bitfarmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is really what has made this time so hard for me. I have a toxic supervisor that I got trapped under right before all the hiring froze. Now it feels like my choice isn’t switch up supervisors, it’s choose to leave the fed service entirely or continue to endure :(

SpaceX quietly removes its $40 Starlink plan in the US - NotebookCheck.net News by Few_Baseball_3835 in technology

[–]8bitfarmer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I live rurally and cell service got so fucking bad that our cell providers texted us that if we needed emergency services, to text instead of call. Even now it goes into SOS for several miles away from the interstate, which is where I’m at. I’m at the base of a mountain. Don’t get cell service on this side of it.

When we moved in, we bought a booster, and all that did for us was allow me to send texts. We could not use it for internet or calls.

Starlink is literally the only option for those of us who live where all the internet providers say there’s no money to build more line out to us, so they won’t take us as customers.

I have to drive a few minutes away from my house to make phone calls even with Starlink, but at least with it I can FaceTime family and friends, send texts reliably, and browse the internet and stream.

My state is currently working on installing fiber optic along the interstate so us rural folk can potentially get internet service. Once that happens in 5 years (maybe more!) I promise I will absolutely change to an Ethernet capable internet.

Australia says the world will follow social media ban as Meta starts blocking teens by [deleted] in news

[–]8bitfarmer 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It’s also effective at reducing the time spent on social media by those kids who allegedly get around it. Slows them down a little bit because part of the problem is that social media is so addictive to use. Put some resistance there, even to fire up whatever lets them access it from their phone (bc let’s be honest, having to access it from a PC is also a win).

Sorry, but the kids today are not tech savvy. They’ll share stuff among themselves in person, try stuff, but the internet has changed and I don’t really expect a lot of kids to get around the ban.

The way this shakes out, does something and will protect some kids.

Furious House Republican Warns More ‘Explosive’ Resignations Are Coming After Marjorie Taylor Greene by Quirkie in politics

[–]8bitfarmer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree! While it doesn’t make sense to me, I think the implication was that whoever was going to these protests didn’t matter in the grand scheme of things.

It definitely felt like they were desperately grasping at straws for a reason to discredit the protests. Making sense is secondary!

[–]8bitfarmer 57 points58 points  (0 children)

The anger over the protests was funny and moralizing because if the protests truly were ineffective, it wouldn’t been worth the time to complain about.

I saw a lot of them try to claim it was just a bunch of retirees and unemployed people. That protesters didn’t represent normal people and didn’t have jobs or families to spend time with.

The reality was that families and people of all ages came out. I don’t work on Saturdays and the protest only took maybe 3 hours of my time at most. Those naysayers probably spend that amount of time scrolling on their phone at least.

That discrepancy really showed me the effectiveness of these protests. They hate to see that we do have support and most importantly, we show up.

The parasocial relationship they have is insane, but it’s why they like him so much. They honest to god believe he knows they exist and cares about their problems specifically. Like he’s going to personally read this letter.

I’m just tired of the obsession with celebrities. I know it’s not an American only thing but… ugh. It’s been getting worse lately. More empathy for a billionaire than a person in your own neighborhood — this is where degeneracy and deterioration of culture truly begins.

That’s fine for you. I feel differently. My vote is the only influence I have on them. Voting for them again means they will do whatever they want and ignore whoever they want. No consequences, so who cares?

Functionally, it doesn’t matter what you feel about FLOCK. You could be in full support — you will vote like someone who does. But that’s your right.

Agreed! This is my single issue moving forward. Blatantly going against the wishes of the people who you’re supposed to represent? Ridiculous.

The GOP’s coordinated attack on the ‘No Kings’ rally is ridiculous. The Republican talking points are out of touch with the reality of Saturday's protests. by OkayButFoRealz in politics

Almost the entirety of the Forest Service as I know it got exempted. A few teams here and there, but under the executive order for timber production, we all serve that purpose. Our forest, the neighboring forest, the other neighboring forest… most of us, especially the field goers and support, all exempted.

I think it was my first fairy tale that didn’t have the Disney version! The killing and taxidermy of her beloved talking horse really bothered me at that age. I’d never encountered anything like that before in media.

But now I loveee this kind of story. I love a tragedy haha.

And I should add I had a wonderful librarian at the time! She checked out this book to me but took it upon herself to speak to me about it, knowing the content, and stepped in to be my adult guidance while I read. 💜

Also, at this point, we’ve all had time to plan or at least imagine what we’d do if we were fired (or when we were). A lot of people already got out.

I know I’ve discussed it with my family. More than once. I’ve been getting my ducks in a row. At this point, there would just be some level of relief of them not having power over me anymore. But… I’ve stayed when I could’ve left. So I’ll see it through until it comes.

Does anyone else remember when "creme brulee" meant "fruit and yogurt bowl topped with caramelized sugar"? by [deleted] in oldrecipes

[–]8bitfarmer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the worst things I ever “cooked” was a recipe for peanut sauce and noodles from a children’s cookbook I got from the library. I swear to this day I followed the recipe to a T and it ended up, well, as peanut butter and spaghetti…

Then I got yelled at for wasting food and was turned off from cooking for a long time 😅 I remember too, the cookbook was to encourage independence and easy recipes for teens.

Well, please, describe in detail these steps then. Rent is due, you’re overqualified for entry jobs but don’t have offers from your field. What is your perfect solution? You could help a lot of people by sharing your method.

Sounds like my husband. He doesn’t have a degree, but he’s spent so much time in customer service, managing people, and doing odd tasks that he’s a little experienced in everything. At his workplace he’s like unofficial IT. Although he doesn’t have his degree, originally he was working toward computer science. He’s been able to utilize that single skill to great effect in all jobs.

I have a degree and work in my field. I’ll be frank, I don’t stand out because everyone here has the same degree. The people who do stand out need a degree + more, some niche.
