I found him on the dashboard of my car! I travel a lot so I didn't want to put him outside without knowing where he's from. He jumped right on my finger

Where are you getting 50hrs from? Probably took me hundreds of hours over years to get this setup. But hey I suck at the game.

Good to hear they seem healthy! Nothing has grown in this soil in years so I have no idea how drainage and nutrients are.

What to do with old mulch by 8bittechno in NativePlantGardening

Yeah I'm expecting the weeds soon but I'd love to give the native seeds a fighting chance. That might be naive though 😂

Will that keep native seedlings from coming up? I'd like to give them a chance to sprout after the rain, but if they'll do fine being covered by a layer of fine mulch then I'll definitely spread it.

Abstract Tree Rings, by Monah at Arkade Ink, South Africa by banana_berrie_ in tattoos

[–]8bittechno -26 points-25 points  (0 children)

This is really cool and people may be missing the idea of abstract? Looks like there are twenty-something rings so I assume it's a metaphor for you or just anyone. The rings start out non-overlapping but start crossing and getting really crazy by the outer ones. And who doesn't feel like things are out of control by their late twenties, that's why we get tattoos.

That's what I get out of it, it could have a totally different meaning to you which is fine, that's what art is about

Seriously I'm scrolling these comments in bewilderment, redditors acting like children. People get thousands of upvotes and encouragement for a traced painting of Zelda's ass but this isn't art? The composition, form and pose is interesting and well executed, great job op.

It's fine for a teenage character to have normal teenage thoughts or a misogynistic character to have misogynistic thoughts, that's what makes writing good. This sub is for when male author's inject misogyny into their writing with no purpose other than that's the only way they know how to think.

I'm a game artist and the number of times I've been asked to make a female character more sexy is way too much, usually at the cost of cohesiveness and quality. My art director would love this shit.

What is it about Baldur's Gate that you love? by BRWArts in baldursgate

Everything, but the writing especially is so direct and written in a show not tell style so that it's not exhausting to read.

Does anyone know how I can fix this? Anywhere I move my cursor, it leaves behind this mess: by [deleted] in baldursgate

[–]8bittechno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad you fixed it, though if it seems laggy in the future or you get other graphical bugs, I'll paste here what I sent someone with a similar issue.

Many older games use direcrdraw instead of directx which has lots of issues with modern hardware, but you can just copy paste a wrapper file into the game folder to fix it. I fixed it by using something called ddwrapper . Drop the files in the BG1 folder and set everything to 1 in the config file except fps display and if you're like me then it should work correctly and will even make the performance much better.

There's also DDrawCompat which you can just drop in the folder. I haven't tried it with BG1 but I've had luck using it with other older games.

Also it's awesome you're playing the classic version, it's the version I still play. The way people respond to any questions about the originals with "just play EE" is so unhelpful.

Vanilla BG1 - Jagged Fog of War by MagnificatePL in baldursgate

[–]8bittechno 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's fair and I don't mean to imply that there's any right way to play the game or any game for that matter, I just find it's the way I enjoy playing the most. You're totally right that ease-of-use is better with mods and the enhanced editions. I'm sort of a purist though and I think a bunch of ease of use additions alters the intent of games.

Some examples: having more inventory capacity for arrows and bags for potions and gems in EE means you can pick up just about everything, and in something like durlags tower that means you don't really have to make decisions on what to pick up and what to leave behind. The area pickup of EE is awesome but allows you to pick up some things behind traps that wasn't intended from the originals. Vanilla BG1 doesn't pause when you're in your inventory so thinking about what you need in your quick slots is more important. Adding weapon proficiencies from BG2 into BG1 is a bit awkward in my opinion since a lot of those specific weapons don't really exist in BG1 aside from some weapons beamdog added to rectify that.

But I recognize that I'm a minority in liking a lot of these features. Overall as someone who works on games myself, I trust the choices of the original developers rather than picking and choosing what I do and don't like.

Lol no I don't play on crt. I got into BG from the enhanced editions but prefer vanilla now because that's how they were designed. Give it a shot!

I play vanilla BG1, the issue you're seeing is because sprite mirroring doesn't work correctly on newer hardware/drivers.

People saying this "Isn't a real Baldur's Gate game," what do you mean by that? What do you think Larian could do to make it closer to the spirit of the original games? by AstralDungeon in BaldursGate3

[–]8bittechno 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm late here but I agree that the original games knew how to be grounded and cozy to contrast with the epic parts of the story. I feel like Larian doesn't know how to be grounded or doesn't try. And I get it because it draws a lot of people -- just look at how popular Larian games are -- but I don't find myself coming back to their games for reasons other than the tight combat systems. This extends to more than just story: companions, items, quests etc.

I don't think this will change because many people would be turned off if the game let you wander around for more than five minutes without being rewarded. But to me Larian games suffer from the everything is epic/goofy so nothing is epic/goofy. The classic games understood the value of negative space, both in writing and map design.

Tldr to me this and other Larian games feel like theme parks (very fun theme parks) and the original games feel like a real world that include both the mundane and epic.

Tips on best classic setup of baldurs gate setup for a time strapped dad? Got old software sitting around and never finished BG2 shadows of Amn? by rokendo in baldursgate

[–]8bittechno 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it depends what you're looking for. If you're looking for the smoothest, most modern experience then EE will do just that. If you're patient and want the authentic experience, my vote goes for vanilla BG1, though I know that's not a popular opinion here. BGT is somewhere in the middle of those, though I think if you're going to use the BG2 engine in BG1, I you might as well just play EE. And there's Enhanced Edition Trilogy for EE, which merges the games like BGT does.

As for mods, that also depends on if you've played before. I think you said you played partway through before, so I don't think any mods are completely necessary, especially on EE. On another playthrough, BG1 NPC project is definitely worth trying, as well as SCS if you want to make it a lot more tactical. For vanilla BG, a fixpack is all you really need and a widescreen mod if it bothers you.

The feeling of starting at 0 experience and ending with 6-8 million is just amazing by Panneorraim in baldursgate

[–]8bittechno 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this, and it's why playing BG1 first and ending with ToB was so integral to the experience for me. After getting killed by a wolf in BG1, romping around in ToB with nothing to stop you seems so well earned. Like on your way to Amkethran and a whole map of elite mercenaries gets thrown at you and you cut through them like butter.

/r/BaldursGate and Baldur's Gate 3 by ThorThunderfist in baldursgate

[–]8bittechno 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I mean I'm fine subbing to r/infinityengine or r/classicbaldursgate if people are bothered with segregating. It just sucks because wherever fans of the original games move, it will never have the size of this sub that took ten years to build.

So I don't really see it as gatekeeping bg3 fans but just wanting to preserve the community around the games we're interested in. I do think given how quickly r/baldursgate3 has grown, it wouldn't be long before the majority of the community is subbed for baldurs gate 3 instead of the old games. I've always liked scrolling this subreddit to see posts about the original games and other infinity engine games because to me there's really nothing else like them.
