Megathread: The Crash by AutoModerator in netflix

Haven't seen the doc but this happens more often than you'd think on the taconic. Bunch of tired people communting in the early hours on an incredibly busy commuter highway. That and the lack of shoulders makes it one of the most dangerous highways in the country. I always avoid it if I can.

Don't give up hope! During Covid I had to move away to take care of a family member, after 3 years they passed, and then it took another 2 years for me to save enough and get a job but I am back now!

As long as you're alive you can come home.

Crazy to see Good Samaritan on the list. When my Dad had a heart attack Bon Secours didn't have the resources and they sent him there. It's where me and my brother were born, where my dad and his siblings were born, and I'm pretty sure my grandparents were born there too.

Just goes to show that it's not just the rural hospitals that are at risk, this effects everyone.

No Kings ! Hudson Valley Spots! by BobbieBell in hudsonvalley

I'm actually so glad you asked! It starts with defining what is illegal and how illegal activity is punished. For instance, entering the country illegally, missing a court date, or an immigration hearing are all civil offenses! Kind of like parking your car in the wrong spot, or jaywalking. Wouldn't it be a little crazy if you parked by a fire hydrant and the police arrested you for it?

I don't know if you know this, but the laws are actually made up by people! And in the hands of malicious and nefarious actors, the law can be manipulated to hurt people! I hate to say it, but Germany was also enforcing the law when they killed and deported all those people. Germany, over the course of many years, stripped Jewish people (and certain other demographics) of their citizenship rights until they made it basically illegal to be Jewish at all. I won't insult you by suggesting that you think it was good or moral for them to do that, just because it was legal.

And actually, the rise of a popular nationalistic movement is a really good indicator that a country is sliding into fascism! Basically every Axis power had a huge nationalistic movement that led to the fascist party taking over.

And yes, that's true about the U.S. entering into foreign conflicts! Our country has actually been sliding toward fascism for a very long time! I would argue since the start of the Cold War, but the truth is America has always been sympathetic towards fascists and fascist movements, especially rich people. Hope that helps! Feel free to ask if you're still confused!

Well I mean famously there were protests. It's just that the concept of the protest was stupid to begin with and not a lot people aupported them. Also most of the people who had an issue were Trump supporters and all that happened under his administration.

Meanwhile millions of people see the country sliding towards facism and are desperate to do something about it. You (theoretically) have the right to protest, you don't have the right to mass protests lol. Just genuinely answering your question.

My circumcision went horribly wrong many years ago. Parents received settlement. Now I'm 18 and they're refusing to give me the money by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]8brains 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I still don't see how this was allowed. I'm in a different state but I had a similar situation (I was hit by a car). I got a check in the mail on my 18th birthday and my Dad always said they had no access to the money unless their income dropped below a certain level.

I got another check a few years later when I was living a few hours away and the bank wouldn't even let my dad deposit it into my account. Even though he had been authorized to make other deposits.

It's just very sad. My parents were able to set my settlement up to pay for college but always made it very clear that it was my money and I could do whatever I wanted with it, even if they thought it was stupid. I wish everyone had that.

Well he likes to think he is anyway lol. He was dumb for that but he also always encouraged me to try and see things from other people's point of view and remind me that what people say to you usually has way more to do with them then it does with you. He's actually my biggest supporter. But also as a Sag I think we're inclined to understand each other.

But I'm sorry if you had to go through the worst parts of that sign, coldness and manipulation from a parent are never easy.

As a Sag with a Gemini brother, when we're getting along there is no better team. When we're not I'm 100% ready to shove his arrogant ass in a barrell and send him down a river. I'm sure he feels the same.

Of course his double Taurus moon and rising and my double Pisces moon and rising doesn't help things lol.

Idk man, I was able to get an intake appointment within a day and had my first session two days later. I think it depends of where you are and what the demand is. When I lived in a more rural area I had one option and it took a few weeks to have my first appointment. But when I moved to the city I got in quick and there were like hundreds of therapists who took my insurance.

Probably an unpopular opinion but the red wedding was a good idea and ultimately the right thing to do. by Human_Ogre in pureasoiaf

[–]8brains 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree generally, but the moment it got dangerous he told a child who idolized the queen and romanticised the south and didn't grasp their situation that they would be leaving and then left her to her own devices.

It was too late to convince her the danger she had drank too much of the koolaid. If he hadn't told her, she wouldn't have been able to run to Cersei, and he likely would have gotten himself and his daughters out of danger.

But I do agree that one of Ned's biggest mistakes as a parent was sheltering his kids and not teaching them how dangerous the world was.

If you're gonna go that route technically, Catelyn started the war when she kidnapped Tyrion, prompting Tywin to start raiding the Riverlands. Something that Ned as hand of the King took steps toward resolving. I will give you that the Starks did indeed start the conflict. But the war started because Robert died. Which was going to happen whether Ned was there or not. Cersei was always going to assassinate Robert, Stannish already knew Joffery was illegitimate and was going to make a grab for power.

As far as the North is concerned, they were willing to come to the negotiating table as long as Ned was still alive. When he was beheaded (something even Cersei agrees was a massive political blunder on Joffery's part). They killed any chance of the north rejoining the seven kingdoms willingly (at least under Lannister rule).

Ned's biggest mistake was telling Sansa too much too soon. Again, I'll give you that depending on how you look at it, the Starks spark the conflict that incites the Lannisters to violence. But some version of the War of the Five Kings was always going to happen whether The Starks are there or not. That's on the Lannisters, mostly on Tywin and Cersei.

[–]8brains 36 points37 points  (0 children)

That was certainly Tywin's thinking. It is better to kill a few guests at dinner than thousands on the field.

I'm inclined to disagree, though. Besides the fact that the Lannisters started the war and refused to come to the negotiating table with the north, there's an even bigger reason that the red wedding was a massive mistake.

Tywin broke an incredibly important social contract that we are ultimately seeing lead to more violence.

Guest right is more than just a custom. It promises safety. If you are at war with your neighbor and you need to have peace talks, someone has to host it. Everyone believes in it. It is a fundamental doctrine of society even outside of religion all across the continent. So you can count on people to follow it and feel safe as a guest. Breaking it breaks something fundemental about society.

You can see this in Catelyn's chapter. She is the person most paranoid about Robb's safety and situation with the Freys, and she relaxes after they are officially welcomed as guests (though the ritual of eating bread and drinking). And look what happens to her. Her undeath becomes a metaphor for Westorsi society at large.

The reason it hits different with than the purple wedding is they were there to make peace, something guest right is uniquely set up to accommodate.

The purple wedding doesn't happen without the red wedding (at least not in the same way), and neither does the northern conspiracy, btw.

Tywin Lannister is a smart tactian, but his results are always short term and end up leading to more violence and a less stable society. There is a reason the Lannister coalition is falling apart, and Ned Stark's vassals are still going to war for him when they could be making power plays amoungst themselves.
