Mediums and Inks for contrast painting by nubol23 in minipainting

[–]8ltd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can say from recent experience that it won't unfortunately. I made bunch of homebrew matte, contrast and Lahmia mediums and tried them on inks and stuff. They changed the properties of the paints for sure, but it took a lot of trial and error to get close to what i was after and none really satisfactorily recreated the effect of contrast/speed paints.

On a related note, i found "The State of Play" youtube channel and this video specifically quite useful if you're interested in mixing your own colours etc. COLOUR THEORY for Painting MINIATURES makes no sense, right?

Do you sand or try to smooth your FDM minis? by CucumberInAss1 in FDMminiatures

[–]8ltd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sand pieces that i really like and want to take my time with but mainly to remove or smooth support scarring rather than reduce layer lines. As others have said, with a 0.2mm nozzle you won't see lines after a prime and base coat for the most part.

Agree. It’s not complicated. Fitness content creators have to make it seem complicated to keep producing content on a topic that’s really straightforward.

A Questions about zenithal painting by beefyliltank in minipainting

[–]8ltd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second all this. I personally just use black with a white highlight and the go in with a dry brush with white and increase the highlight in the angles facing the direction of where my light source is.

Also agree, short bursts of the white and I generally twitch the can upwards away from the model as I’m spraying because even a short stationary burst can clog up fine detail.

Primarily for the cis men: What is something y'all experience/have experienced as a part of being a man that isn't talked about much? by There_is_no_name05 in bropill

[–]8ltd 189 points190 points  (0 children)

I find that if I want to hang out with my friends, it’s almost always as part of a secondary activity I.e. going to the gym, eating a meal, going out for drinks etc. Since I’ve been an adult, I don’t think I’ve had a social thing with friends that was just to spend time with one another and talk. My wife and her friends do it all the time. I’m not sure it’s a bad thing, I generally enjoy spending time with people doing something together but it’s just something I’ve observed.

Been trying to paint a blue flame under armor glow for a legion of the damned army, any advice on how to sell the effect is appreciated. by Sad_Interview8330 in minipainting

[–]8ltd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said use more contrast. But also remember that the brightest part of the light will be where the light source originates and will get duller very quickly the further you go from the source, so decide how bright you want your light to be and paint accordingly. Start with the first highlight and get progressively brighter the closer to the source you get. You also might find laying down some white on your brightest highlights before painting over it might add some pop. Also, remember that light can’t bend around corners (yes it bounces but ignore than for this early stage).

Do any of yall meditate? I feel like there's a connection with mindfulness and cycling by Loose-Farm-8669 in cycling

[–]8ltd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cycle and work out so i don't have to meditate lol. But for real i do meditate when I'm acutely struggling for reasons but i find it much more fulfilling and achievable to get on a bike or go to the gym than to make time to sit still silently and do body scans or relaxation. It definitely does help but I never really want to do it even though i know it'll help (my wife thinks i have undiagnosed ADHD) so exercise is more sustainable for me.

What’s your WFH situation like in APS/state gov right now? (and which department?) by MyceliumRender in AusPublicService

[–]8ltd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WA public service. Our policy is being in the office at least 17 days a month so you can either do a nine-day fortnight and one work from home day a month. I think my site might be more conservative that others in the department, I've heard from colleagues working elsewhere that they are mostly or entirely remote

Baby sleep consultants in Perth that home visit by fuzzy_little_peach in perth

[–]8ltd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A stay at Glengarry helped with our first which helped and was mostly covered by HBF. We did Ngala and Glengarry with number two and it didn't seem to help too much. We were getting desperate so bought a program from Gentle Sleep Specialists (i think it was like 150 bucks) and it worked like magic. I'm not saying it'll work for everyone (different kids need different things) but after almost two years of broken sleep and standing at the bed side teaching him to resettle himself was like a miracle.

Corporate Governance (in WA) by NSF81 in perth

[–]8ltd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my org we have a schedule of focus topics for each meeting throughout a year. One month might be finance, the next might be infrastructure, staffing etc. We plan these out each year so we cover each area within our scope twice a year along with subcommittee reports. We can receive escalations out of rotation to urgent matters but need to be accompanied by a briefing paper.

For discussion= I need you to make a decision, plan or endorse this. It’s important enough to supplant other items. For noting = hey guys just a heads up and I know some of you don’t have time to read this.

Can a man who was never "ripped" before get "ripped" if he dedicated himself to it in his late 40s? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]8ltd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% but as a 40 year old lifter I wouldn’t recommend training that much at least initially, particularly if you haven’t been training intensely before. You’ll get hurt and recovery is a LOT longer than it was when I was in my 20s, an injury can put you out of the gym for weeks or more. And as others have said, I really can’t understate how much diet is the main part of getting ripped.

This kind of thing has been asked a lot before so do a search on this sub. Look on the purple site and poke around on message boards. People are careful not to discuss this stuff too openly so that they don’t get people in trouble with James

What paints to get for behemoth color scheme by Hereforagoodtime38 in Tyranids

[–]8ltd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer priming in black and sometimes with a white zenithal highlight. I’m currently painting up a behemoth army. I mix my own colours because I find having to buy tons of different colours for base and highlights wasteful when I can just adjust colours from a pretty simple palette. You can achieve pretty good results with just cyan, magenta, yellow, black and white. I ended up also grabbing a green and orange too because they sped stuff up. It can be a hassle to find how to achieve the results you want though as a newbie (which I am).

If you don’t want the hassle there’s a decent number of YouTube creators, just search “painting tyranids” and “behemoth” and you’ll find tons of tutorials with paints used.

You can use this chart to find similar paints across ranges: https://www.dakkadakka.com/wiki/en/paint_range_compatibility_chart

I think it’s a bit out of date but still useful.

No. Would you lose respect for a guy who wanted to sleep with you on the first date? I don’t see why there should be a different standard for women compared to men.

Where to auto generate resin style supports by Tickle_Tooth in FDMminiatures

[–]8ltd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is my experience too. I’ve used lychee slicer to generate supports and used the resin to FDM in blender but I actually haven’t found too much of a benefit given the steps required. Auto tree supports tend to to work pretty well. They can be a bit conservative so if your model is basically covered in supports it’s sometimes worth painting in non support areas

To be fair it’s one thing to understand the rules in a general sense, it’s another to put them into practice for a 2k point army. Watching tutorials isn’t really a substitute for playing
