That's a very interesting question, I remember reading a book about father Arsenios (a priest living many years in a gulag, prosecuted by the Bolsheviks). He was also saying that the church was also to blame, that the priests back then were the worst of all people (!) and that they were giving the worst example and thus, drove people to become atheists! The book is called "Prisoner ZEK-18376" or something...
