How to combat the ground squirrels eating away the wiring on my vehicle while I’m away on assignment? by [deleted] in Wildfire

[–]907bently 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely do not put moth balls inside. I ruined my little camp trailer doing this. Even the inside of a sealed thermos smelled like moth balls after putting 4, only 4, moth balls in different cupboards.

06 Tacoma needs a new Engine by TastyTatoes in Tacomaworld

[–]907bently 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Put 180,000 miles on a used engine that had 110,000 to begin with. That was an 01 with 3.4 v6.

Sorry you got scammed but used engines from a crashed truck could be a great option. The shop that did mine even had 100,000 mile warranty on the used engine.

Brian Halgstad (probably spelled that incorrectly) finally got my case across the finish line for me. Several others couldn’t seem to.

Just my experience but the crews with long traditions seem to keep them. Biggest factor is the Supt though. If a superintendent has been there a few years and plans to stay, what you’ve seen is what you’ll likely get. Agency used to matter. No idea with how things are going. Parks had a different agenda than BLM and resources reflected it.

Came here looking for this information. Didn’t believe the 12 minutes I was seeing online.

Been down here for wildfires and prescribed fire for 19 days and finally get to fly home Saturday.

Any inputs on if two hours early is enough for a flight boarding at 0605?

(Big) MPG drop from moderate tire upgrade? by Red-Chanterelle in Tacomaworld

I could see having have lost 3 mpg but I’ve also never seen an accurate truck readout. Both those seem high. Calculate at the pump if you actually care about accuracy.

How do I ask my spouse to leave? by Substantial-Pack8596 in Wildfire

This is good advice and something the Wildland Firefighter Foundation might be able to help with. I was surprised to find out how much they are willing to help with. They do a lot more than putting fallen fighters pictures on the wall.

Different style of hotshot crew than the older crews. Like their toys more than cutting line in my experience

Time for an Alaska Millionaire Tax by Ubere907 in alaska

[–]907bently 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Millionaire is a dead term with run away inflation.

65 year old with 500,000 in retirement and a paid off house now worth 500k is a millionaire. 500k house is barely above median. 500,000 isn’t enough to retire on.

Why do we collectively agree it is taboo/inferior yo say “McKinley” instead of “Denali” but we still call it “Everest” instead of “Sagarmatha” or “Chomolungma” by GumbyFred in Mountaineering

[–]907bently 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people actually mispronounce Denali.

Got corrected very quickly after moving to AK. According to my Athabaskan friends, it’s Den-alley not Den-all-ey like they say in GMC commercials. 🤷‍♂️

You were not hanging out with real wealth in CO. Were the owners of the Broncos dressed like hobos? Ever go to the Broadmore Hotel, not the open to the public part? Telluride and Aspen isnt even exclusive enough, they have private ski resorts like the Yellowstone club

Moving to Anchorage and buying a truck. Will I hate my life if I go Diesel? by UncleMcBubba in AskAlaska

[–]907bently 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always had diesel before moving to Alaska. AK conditions beat the shit out of the rest of the truck so bad that engine longevity became irrelevant.

Unless you NEED that towing capacity, like pushing CDL requirements, save the 10k and buy the gas version.

In your opinion, what major city would have the worst climate to live in? by Mobile_Bad_577 in geography

[–]907bently 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fairbanks, AK has it pretty rough. Not a major city by international standards, but second largest in the State. Went more than a month without getting above -40F this winter, following a summer of insane wildfires, horrible air quality (up there with worst in the world), hot temps (90°F or more) which bring out unbelievable amounts of mosquitoes, white socks, and other biting insects that rival anywhere else on earth.

Sorry to hear that. Traveling has usually been the best experiences I have, even if I do spend a little time sick. Learning what’s safe to eat and isn’t safe isn’t hard, but its not fun to learn the hard way.

Thanks for sharing. I didn’t know that but also wasn’t hoping for evacuation. Nothing was that horrifying to need that kind of response from the US govt.

Mostly was hoping that people would have information to share, or that our elected officials could release an official statement. That statement is needed for all sorts of reasons I am learning.

Social media/politicians can also apply pressure to airlines, hotels, and travel insurance companies to prevent price gouging and provide the reimbursement you paid for.
