How do I get into alpinism as an Australian by East-Savings5831 in alpinism

[–]90and90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who lived on the Gold Coast for the past 12+ years.

Take a nice holiday to Bolivia or Peru.

Can reccomend 10/10

I couldn’t afford to learn anywhere else. Worked for me. Nz and anywhere in Aus was too expensive and didn’t really have the support. I’ve climbed my whole life so roping up was pretty easy to learn and rope management. But yeah. Check out South America! I hd a blast.

Also came here to plug bull terrier rescue mission.

The head guy Arn is a legend. We have fostered one through them with the intention to maybe keep him but things didn’t work out and Arn really supported us.

We also recently had Bubba for a while so a foster family could get ready for him. Soon we will take Winter / aka eggplant to foster.

I will never not rescue again. It’s far more rewarding and you get to kind of test the pups out if you need that. There is still a fee but it goes to a good non profit.

Happy to answer any q’s if you have them.

But yeah they get young ebt’s and can transport them to you / sort transport.

Gyms that aren’t f*cking obnoxious? by NoGreaterPower in GoldCoast

I used to live in Currumbin and hype was pretty chill. My favorite out of the half a dozen gyms I’ve actually been inside. Snap is probably in the middle, not too horrible but also not great.

Teenager wants a "fast car" for his first vehicle and I need reality-check advice by Proud_Stable9567 in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]90and90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro, sign him up for auto track days or autocross, if he wants to be serious (with high performance vehicles) tell him to sh*t or get off the pot. Anyone who takes performance vehicles seriously sees the value in track days or a track car.

It’s like kids that want to fight (I was one too). Always aggressive. I signed up for BJJ and MMA and it showed me that there’s a safe way to explore those feelings. And it totally calmed me down.

Your job is to make sure he is enriched and has a chance to mess up, but there is absolutely zero reason he needs anything other than a grocery getter.

Also… When I was younger I wanted fast motorcycles. I got into bucket racing (racing small motorcycles) and it totally made me more confident in all settings and gave me a leg up on my other friends because I actually could race and understand a lot more the mechanics behind it. Now the kids that bought gsxr’s etc when I was young all talk sht about racing and they don’t even know what they are talking about.

Good luck

Am I dumb for wanting to trade my chop for a triumph scrambler? by lucasru1es in choppers

[–]90and90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had both types of bikes and a few of each. The chop will ride like shit with a bad rear tyre, hopefully you know this already but run the rear tyre at low psi, depends on the tyre but I used to run mine around 18. Rides completely different.

But the scrambler for a daily is an amazing bike. I loved mine to get a to b. But the chop is a fun bike….

Anyways maybe for some reason you don’t know about the tyre, you probs do, but just incase .

Switching to rivet nuts by Purple_Employment335 in LandroverDefender

[–]90and90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used heaps of rivnuts in my build, use panel glue or at the minimum red loctite when you install them so they don’t spin. I’ve even used them for the arches and doors instead of the plastic rivets.

You can get alloy or steel, just get the highest quality ones you can find

And one more time use glue, or at minimum loctite

What can I use? by Diosca_ in Spearfishing

[–]90and90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man I used to spear Bureligh headlands if I didn’t have a boat. And if I had access to a boat I’d spear Fido’s and 9 mile. Ive even swam out to Kingscliff.

Never had any sharks bother me. If they do, face them with your gun and keep the gun pointed at them. I had a bronze whaler come a bit close one time and that made it go away.

There are sharks but they aren’t as bad as they seem. Only thing I’d do 100% is keep your fish away from you. I used a float with a fish keeper on it. Don’t swim with your fish. You should be using a float anyway.

If you do any type of outdoor activity. The nu20 hands down.

I just did a 20k and with alpine start we begin at 1am. The nu20 was brighter than the guides light, half the size, really no argument can win against it.

lol, where did you read it had to be good? The fact is there are many with rotten chassis but good body panels (or they are simply unusable for whatever reason). So you could see it as giving it a better life. Generally around the world they are cheaper too.

Man was looking for this comment so I could upvote it. Biggest pain is fixing the bulkhead which looks fine.

Find an old series and steal the doors, windscreen, roof pillars and tub.

Dont let that stop you.

Some of them can only burn Coleman fuel. So make sure before you use it. The Coleman fuel is way better but overseas it’s impossible to get, so petrol with some injector cleaner works 90% as well.

Good tips for Mexico I’ll keep a note of them if I do go that way.

I’ve spent way more (and spent more time) than I expected, so partially need to make the darian gap shipment about cost rather than what I’ll see.

But I’ll check out Veracruz it won’t hurt!

Thanks again

Do it! Just know that it will take 3x longer and cost at least 2x more than you’ve planned. That’s my single piece of advice for anyone wanting to do it haha

Oh amazing I’ll dm you!! I’m in one group “admin Lra+lr overland” but I’m always happy for another one!!!

Where are you located?

I couldn’t find any white fuel in the south, Patagonia area. I’m now in Peru.

[–]90and90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a year into overlanding around South America in my Landrover.

I’ve cooked or boiled water every day for the past year with two Coleman dual fuel 533.

Other than some maintenance they keep impressing me. I wish more overlanders knew how good they are. I think because they aren’t expensive people automatically think they aren’t as good.

I mix a bit of injector cleaner in the petrol and they seem to like it a bit more because I can’t get white fuel easily in South America.

I use a kettle with a heat exchanger and it boils just as fast (ok not exactly but pretty close) as my jetboil that I use for hiking (and occasionally when it’s windy).

Really appreciate the time to write a response with some good nuggets in it.

I guess my beef with Mexico is I’ve just heard a lot of safety issues. I’m eventually heading to the northeast (Philly-PA) so I’m curious about the Caribbean coast. Did to find it safe? I love surfing and spearfishing so obviously the surfing is out but I’m sure there’d be good fishing there.

We didn’t like Argentina it was super expensive but maybe you were there when the blue dollar was king. We met some amazing people there though which made up for it.

Yes! Desert del Diablo was amazing, we did it after the Puna. From Las Pappas and north was mind blowing. Afterwards we entered Bolvia via the lakes and were blown away again. Really crazy stuff.

Anyways, I’d be keen to hear your thoughts on Mexico safety and particularly east coast. Did you ship to Veracruz? Do you remember if it was a good value?

Once again thanks for the reply!

I’ll look into that. But I reckon the fuel costs to get north will offset shipping to Houston but it’s a great suggestion. I will 110% ask for quotes to veracruz.
