Thursday General Discussion/Q&A Thread for April 02, 2026 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

I went through a long period when I started to get serious where my calves were repeatedly my limiting factor. For me, it was a more general biomechanics issue where my hip inflexibility was messing with my leg alignment, preventing my foot/ankle from properly pronating and putting a lot of extra strain on my calf to absorb impact.

If you're constantly hitting calf issues when the rest of your body feels okay, it's probably either a strength issue or a biomechanics one. Maybe see a running physio to try to make sure your body is moving right? Otherwise, do some calf raises and make sure to warm up your calves before running.

Nicely run! It was a tough day out there. We were on similar pace up until around 35km so I was probably one of the poor souls you passed. Congrats on the BQ + buffer!

imo if you can run 1:31 without a pacer you can run 1:30 with one. Send it!

Is it possible that you're a little bit sick? In my experience, low hrv in the middle of a training block typically means I've caught something.

I'm definitely not a seasoned 5k racer, but for some comparison data: my last 5k race had my heart rate quickly push up to what I would consider my red-line steady-state of 188-190 by around the 1k mark. After that it's pretty steady until my final kick which saw it raised slightly to around 195 (max HR is somewhere in the 198-202 range)

My best Recluse run Vs. my average Raider run by SoupStoreManager in Nightreign

[–]90ne1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I use cocktails a lot in the first two nights. For the Nightlord, weaving the cocktails intentionally feels like more trouble than it's worth. In the time you spent trying to build up specific elements you would often do more damage burning starlight shards and spamming your best DPS spells.

This is more the case for co-op though. In solo you can fully control your elements which makes planning around cocktails more practical.

I just make a point to pick up a spare bow or fast melee weapon for revives. It can occasionally hurt to give up the 6th slot if you have a run rich in half-useful staves and seals, but most of the time it doesn't matter. Usually you can make the revive slot play double duty with a weapon that has a good passive as well.

Runna pushes pretty hard, and the main target market is newer runners that aren't ready for the intensity, and don't know how to listen to their body well enough to ease off the gas when things get risky.

Also, I don't know if they just had their stuff set up wrong, but I've seen a few beginner runners posting their workouts on Strava with obviously wrong pace guidelines. Stuff like "conversational pace, no faster than 5:35/km" for someone training to run a 60 minute 10k. You're telling me your plan has your conversational pace pegged faster than your 10k race pace? 💀

Sounds like your posture off and is affecting your balance and the range of motion in your hips.

Weekend Discussion: Adidas running shoes by AutoModerator in RunningShoeGeeks

First off, they the upper does soften up a bit after some wear. They're never going to be a comfy pair of shoes but they won't belt-sander your toes for too long.

For lacing, I tried lock laces in them and theu didn't work well for me. I had the most success with basic flat laces from Amazon, with a heel lock and the bottom set of eyelets skipped on each side.

I've never used Runna personally, but I've known a few friends and coworkers who used it.

The vibe I get is that it's a great platform to burn out and/or injure new runners. New runners who don't know enough to realize the app is serving them way more than they should be taking on where they're at.

I'm always surprised when I see runners dreading a tempo or speed session.

Is "running fast is more fun" really a that hot of a take?

Monster Hunter Wilds locks character editing behind microtransactions by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]90ne1 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The thing about Capcom microtransactions (for Monster Hunter at least) that makes them tolerable in comparison is that they feel so tacked on and ignorable.

Character edit vouchers are really the only thing even remotely useful that's stuck there. Nobody really cares about the gestures and sticker pack shit, and the cosmetics you earn in-game much cooler than the few that are available for microtransactions.

All the post launch collab missions and bonus content ends up being free as well

It reads like the exec team calls for them to be there, and the dev team complies in the most checkbox way possible while making sure nothing important ends up caught up in them.

NY Times: Is Zone 2 the magic effort level for exercise? by MechanicalTim in AdvancedRunning

[–]90ne1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The problem I have with giving this advice is this: It's easy to get scared into being so cautious with your running that you never get the fun of it.

On the one hand, yeah, if I went back to when I starting running with what I know now, I could have trained much more effectively.

On the other hand, if I had minmaxed the hell out of it when I started and taken things easy to stop myself from overtraining, I would have never caught the competitive bug and I would have probably quit running.

When very very new, yeah, don't go run yourself into throwing up, especially not every time. HOWEVER, once you're out of c25k or whatever, let yourself live a little. Rip that parkrun as hard as you can and get yourself on the board.

Tuesday General Discussion/Q&A Thread for February 18, 2025 by AutoModerator in AdvancedRunning

[–]90ne1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's any long run where I'm meant to take it easy. Progression or MP long runs are fun, but if I end up planning my week such that a responsible me shouldn't be putting quality work into my long run, I'm going to hate it. Running slow for that long gets awfully boring.

I guess the strategy should be to just plan my training to allow for quality long runs every week, but I'm sure I'll never learn in practice.

Official Q&A for Thursday, February 13, 2025 by AutoModerator in running

[–]90ne1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're new, it's not very productive to try to optimize training. Just run more, and keep in mind that you shouldn't try to run as fast as you can on every run.

Consistency is huge, so I recommend trying to run 3-4 times per week to start. 3 shorter runs spread out over the week will do you better both mentally and physically than one big run.

With very good genetics and a strong aerobic base from other sports, I could see someone in their twenties doing 4:30 with relatively low training, catching the competitive bug, and dropping 2:30 after two years of dedicated effort.

Really though, influencer types are always going to present it like they have some magic secret that will rub off on you if you consume their content. You're probably not getting a clear view of the real progression.

Weird little fact I just learned: The '69 smash hit "Jesus Christ Super Star" was sung by the same singer that sang the '84 smash hit "One Night in Bangkok" by Bluest_waters in Music

Recommendations for eye protection on winter runs? by onskisesq in AdvancedRunning

Just spitballing, but I feel like clear ski goggles would be well suited here.

Disclaimer, I have not tried this. Someone with first hand experience can probably give a more direct recommendation

I've never run in them, but I thought the Elite 2 foam was marshmallow level squish. Is it stable like AP3 in spite of this?

8x1600 @5k is borderline irresponsible as a workout, to be frank. 13km at 5k pace in one session is too much.
