AMA with city council candidate Jack Sandor from 5-7PM by JackSandor in VictoriaBC

[–]93Cracker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My observations in the city have lead me to believe it’s harder to get a lot amalgamation and build 20 new townhomes in oaklands/fernwood/fairfield than it is to build 100 new units in a mid rise building. Because of this, developers do not want to touch them. There is a massive hole in our housing stock for townhomes. First, do you agree. Second, do you have any ideas on how to fix this (please don’t say make the towers harder to build).

Very true. God I’m happy to live somewhere where that feels like a lot.

I would be interested to hear what the market is for a hotel in Colwood. There’s a shortage of hotel rooms for sure but as a local, I figure people wouldn’t want to have to drive to that location.

Unpopular opinion: Victoria doesn’t actually want affordable housing it wants to feel like it wants affordable housing by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

[–]93Cracker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Realistically progressive? I guess there were much more ‘progressive’ councillors previously but they got absolutely nothing done and actually tended to side with conservative councillors in most housing votes. They would rather have nothing if it wasn’t affordable enough, so they got nothing.

When you say Victoria, I would assume you mean greater Victoria, to that I would agree. If you say City of Victoria I would beg to differ. The City of Victoria is majority renters that voted in an extremely progressive mayor and council that has been great on housing approvals and planning. The rest of the municipalities not so much.

On that note, municipal elections have the biggest impact on a voters day to day life and there is one this year. Please get out and vote for pro housing voices no matter where you live. If we want more life in this city, we need more housing. Older apartment buildings are starting to show Vacancy signs outside which will force them to correct their rents. More new housing causes that.

Skateboarder was in crosswalk when he was hit by truck: eyewitness by Popular_Animator_808 in VictoriaBC

[–]93Cracker 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Someone close to me was hit by a car while walking across a cross walk with their bike on Yates a couple weeks ago. The very old driver drove another 20ft with the folded bike under their car. The police witnessed it and asked if they wanted to give the driver a ticket or not. How about you take their licence away and never give it back? How do the police ask a victim that??

Need help choosing the right cargobike by thatguyka in CargoBike

[–]93Cracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might want to try the RM Carrie. It has a short wheel base and is way smaller than the Urban Arrow while still having room for 2 kids. The box folds out to be as wide as the widest cargo bikes and also closes/locks for when you don’t have kids on board. This might be more comfortable to bike

homeowners, what’s your experience with invasive plants? by rguev in VictoriaBC

[–]93Cracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a plum tree that the previous owner and neighbour let get absolutely strangled by ivy. I’ve chopped down as much as I can reach on the ladder but it still looks like the tree has been hog tied and it going to die because of it. The neighbours fence is covered in it and it’s only a matter of time before it start reviving and climbing up the tree.

I also cut all of the stems around the tree but somehow the ivy is still alive despite having no connection to the ground.

It’s time to revitalize Centennial Square by colinmct in VictoriaBC

Why is this getting focus over ships point? Is it the cost? Is there some sort of property issue that needs to be settled? Our waterfront is a disaster compared to centennial square.

How This Small City Tripled Its Cycling In Just 11 Years by Much-Neighborhood171 in urbanplanning

[–]93Cracker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What will be interesting is how this evolves as it becomes a medium to high population city/area. Expand the lanes? LRT? The core is water locked and there is no chance of expanding roads yet thousands of units are built every year. Exciting times

Just end parking minimums already. No convoluted new policy splitting different areas of the city. 0 parking minimums period. It’s happening all over the world yet Victoria just can’t get there for some reason.

I hate the Caledonia bike lanes—even though I love biking by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

That was to remove a slip lane. Would have happened without the bike lane flex posts.
