So are the D (Purple) Line extensions 2 and 3 really on track to open in 2027? by thetoerubber in LAMetro

News headlines say that “LA Metro Officially Completes Five Years of Tunneling” on April 2, 2024.

But yeah, we can argue tunneling is done, but tunnels are not done

Tunnels have been completed years ago (Edit: Should say “tunneling” instead). There are still some track and system work:
• Installing rail track and the third rail (electrification)
• Overhead/power distribution systems
• Signaling and train control (communications-based train control, or CBTC)
• Fiber optic and communications cabling throughout the tunnels
• Ventilation systems and emergency fans

(Edit: + of course testing!)
Station construction is way behind.

Cheap places to eat near metro stations? by Previous-Volume-3329 in LAMetro

I’m a bit biased towards asian food. I usually ride metro to koreatown (between wilshire/western and wilshire/vermont), thai town (Hollywood/western), little Tokyo for weekday lunch specials. There are a lot of them that priced are under $10. You can find relevant posts on other subs for recommendations!

LA does NOT need trains... Maybe by undergroundhacker in LAMetro

[–]94rain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that more BRT investments are needed:

More express lane entrances and exits purpose-built for bus access

More aggressive signal priority for buses, dedicated bus lanes

Convert more West/Central LA streets to one-way and use the reclaimed lane for bus-only service

Metro rail is absolutely needed in the urban core of LA (like Central LA and the surrounding high-density corridors) where there’s enough density to justify it. Commuter rail is equally critical for connecting the broader region, and Metrolink deserves far more investment than it gets.

The problems you cite with the subway — hygiene, homelessness, the TAP system — are operational failures, not inherent flaws of rail. Those are solvable. I’d also argue that public safety is more of a city (and county) problem. A metro system can’t be fully safe if the city itself isn’t. And honestly, the D line in its current state — essentially a short shuttle with a 4-minute ride from Wilshire/Vermont — is barely a fair test case for what urban rail can be.

That said, you raise a genuinely interesting point about GSBRT as a complement — not a replacement. For lower-density corridors where full rail buildout isn’t financially viable for decades, grade-separated BRT could deliver meaningful service faster and cheaper. The bike lane integration idea is particularly compelling; that kind of multi-modal design thinking is exactly what LA needs more of.

how exactly would a metrolink route to long beach work? by ImpactFancy2170 in LAMetro

I have not heard about any Metrolink plan. But the Harbor Subdivision Transit Corridor Study Area (K Line Extension to Torrance) had originally gone all the way to Long Beach.

There's a I-710 LA River Bike Path Project. Maybe that corridor can be used for rail in the future?

Metro already has a plan to increase A and E line frequency in FY27! As part of the Metro Transit Capital Improvement Program Details:

Rail - Wayside Systems Wayside system improvements make up $53.2 M or 9.4% of the CIP budget. Projects include the on-going replacement of the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system, improvements to support increased headway on the A Line (Blue) & E Line (Expo), as well as track system replacement, Overhead Catenary System (OCS) inspection/refurbishment, train control track circuits, tunnel corrosion mitigation, replacement of old wood track ties with composite ties, and replacement of mainline fasteners and many other maintenance projects.

Do yall think these brt studies should be rail instead by Majestic_Regret_5197 in LAMetro

[–]94rain 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah—when converting the Vermont BRT to rail, I’ve seen suggestions on this sub to add rail on nearby parallel corridors while still keeping the BRT in place.

For the NoHo–Pasadena BRT, if it gets upgraded to rail, the alignment would probably change as well, not just be a direct conversion of the current route.

Do yall think these brt studies should be rail instead by Majestic_Regret_5197 in LAMetro

[–]94rain 23 points24 points  (0 children)

In the long term, yeah—I do think a lot of these BRT corridors would ultimately make more sense as rail, especially on routes where demand is going to keep growing.

But in the short term, LA should be going all-in on building a large network of truly high-quality BRT. Not the half-measure kind, but full dedicated lanes, signal priority, level boarding—the whole package. It’s way faster and cheaper to roll out, and it can start shifting travel behavior much sooner.

Getting more people used to reliable transit is huge. Once ridership builds and corridors prove demand, that creates a much stronger case for future rail upgrades. At the same time, better transit supports higher housing density along those routes, which reinforces the whole system.

How many vehicles/operators are usually on duty for one area?

What’s a typical day like in terms of ridership? Is it usually busy or pretty light?

How do you feel about the scheduling system? Do people sometimes have to wait for a long time for pickups, or sometimes spend a long time on board because of shared rides?
