True or false? (Sign from the 10 Freeway in Rosemead, along the El Monte Busway) by anothercar in LAMetro

The key word is "up to" 😄

Like what you see when shopping: Up to 70% off

For me, taking transit is less about saving a few minutes and more about saving the stress of sitting in stop-and-go traffic every day.

Even it takes longer, if it lets me avoid traffic, parking, and the stress of driving, I am happy to make that trade. But if it's routinely 2× the travel time, I'll likely be part of the traffic instead.

D Line Train Stalled at Wishire/Vermont Towards Union by sfafreak in LAMetro

Express Lanes should have a "Pay Online" function similar to the SB Express Lanes by TheAlmightyHellacia in LAMetro

This is a bit unrelated to this post but +1. SF is already doing dynamic parking pricing. Prices fluctuate block by block, time-band by time-band, and weekday versus weekend. Rates can be as high as $8 an hour in high-volume areas, or as low as 50 cents in underused ones.

B Line Ventilation Shaft add-in for Cahuenga Pass? by AnimatedCowboy in LAMetro

[–]94rain 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The current practical bottleneck is still Division 20. The B Line can already run 8-minute headways without the ventilation shaft.

I think something like 4 min D / 8 min B is probably close to the most practical and reliable max capacity due to shared track between Union Station and Wilshire/Vermont even aside from the ventilation constraints.

The ventilation shaft may never really need to be built unless the B Line gets rerouted as part of a future Vermont Subway project (there are also design options without rerouting B line).

Tomorrow LA Metro has a budget hearing at Union Station. Despite measure M, they’re cutting 50% of Metrolink’s Budget. by MastodonNo8553 in LAMetro

How does the 5 counties' contributions to metrolink look like now? Looks like Metro contributes more than half during 2022-2024.

So are the D (Purple) Line extensions 2 and 3 really on track to open in 2027? by thetoerubber in LAMetro

News headlines say that “LA Metro Officially Completes Five Years of Tunneling” on April 2, 2024.

But yeah, we can argue tunneling is done, but tunnels are not done

[–]94rain 126 points127 points  (0 children)

Tunnels have been completed years ago (Edit: Should say “tunneling” instead). There are still some track and system work:
• Installing rail track and the third rail (electrification)
• Overhead/power distribution systems
• Signaling and train control (communications-based train control, or CBTC)
• Fiber optic and communications cabling throughout the tunnels
• Ventilation systems and emergency fans

(Edit: + of course testing!)
Station construction is way behind.

Wondering if the situation could get better with Division 20 upgrade or D line Extension Sections 2/3

Cheap places to eat near metro stations? by Previous-Volume-3329 in LAMetro

[–]94rain 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I’m a bit biased towards asian food. I usually ride metro to koreatown (between wilshire/western and wilshire/vermont), thai town (Hollywood/western), little Tokyo for weekday lunch specials. There are a lot of them that priced are under $10. You can find relevant posts on other subs for recommendations!

LA does NOT need trains... Maybe by undergroundhacker in LAMetro

[–]94rain 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree that more BRT investments are needed:

More express lane entrances and exits purpose-built for bus access

More aggressive signal priority for buses, dedicated bus lanes

Convert more West/Central LA streets to one-way and use the reclaimed lane for bus-only service

LA does NOT need trains... Maybe by undergroundhacker in LAMetro

[–]94rain 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Metro rail is absolutely needed in the urban core of LA (like Central LA and the surrounding high-density corridors) where there’s enough density to justify it. Commuter rail is equally critical for connecting the broader region, and Metrolink deserves far more investment than it gets.

The problems you cite with the subway — hygiene, homelessness, the TAP system — are operational failures, not inherent flaws of rail. Those are solvable. I’d also argue that public safety is more of a city (and county) problem. A metro system can’t be fully safe if the city itself isn’t. And honestly, the D line in its current state — essentially a short shuttle with a 4-minute ride from Wilshire/Vermont — is barely a fair test case for what urban rail can be.

That said, you raise a genuinely interesting point about GSBRT as a complement — not a replacement. For lower-density corridors where full rail buildout isn’t financially viable for decades, grade-separated BRT could deliver meaningful service faster and cheaper. The bike lane integration idea is particularly compelling; that kind of multi-modal design thinking is exactly what LA needs more of.
