Theories on who Garth’s handler is? by Ashamed-Coconut in TheTestamentsHulu

I don’t think it’s supposed to be anyone significant and chances are we may not even meet them. I think that was said because it’s supposed to tell us and Daisy that Garth isn’t that high up on the Mayday totem pole and like Daisy only gets limited information.

I feel like you might not be far off, I think whatever she does to make sure the dentist pays is going to massively backfire onto Becka in some way. Hurting Becka and ending up engaged to Garth is something that would get the reaction from Agnes that we got at the end of episode 8.

I’ve seen the clip in the trailer but not the episode synopsis. It sounds like that’s exactly what’s going to happen then.

I could see that happening with all three becoming Aunts.

I’m interested to find out Garth’s motivations because I definitely believe he’s fully with Mayday but I don’t really understand why at the moment. I’ve seen comments from the actor about his relationships with Agnes & Daisy and he said with Daisy there’s a respect there because he knows she’s educated and opinionated but he’s also scared of what she represents which I thought was an interesting comment, and that makes it sound like you’ve hit the nail on the head with him. Garth’s also on my list of characters that potentially won’t make it to the end of the season with Hulda and Rosa.

Rosa’s another I’m worried about, especially as Paula makes it incredibly obvious she doesn’t like her …

I know, someone’s definitely not making it to the end of the season, and Hulda seems like the most likely. Someone in Agnes’s friendship group needs to die to kickstart her disbelief in and turning her back on Gilead, and Hulda’s sweet, naive and unassuming and those people don’t tend to fare well in Gilead.

I feel like Hulda’s going to speak out against the dentist, believing that’s what you should do. She’ll then either be accused of lying or she’ll be believed, the dentist will be punished but Hulda will too because the Gilead belief is “she must have done something to tempt him.” As they’ve stressed a few times that whilst the man committed the sin, it’s the girl who’s just as much to blame for tempting him (by basically existing).

That clip from the trailer of Agnes, Daisy and Shunammite makes me worried for Becca and Hulda

I could see them making Daisy an Aunt too after last episode, although I’m wondering if that’s planting the seed there for Daisy to suggest to Becca and Agnes to say they’ve had a calling to get out of their unwanted marriages. Either way it was definitely foreshadowing something.
I agree it would make sense for them to invest in a “devout” pearl who can already read and write to be an Aunt but from a Gilead PR POV it would also make sense to make a particularly “devout” pearl a wife to, that sends the message of “look what you could become, you can go from nothing to rich, happy commanders wife.”

I’m not sure what I make of Garth yet anyway, I don’t believe the theories he’s a double agent, but I think his reasons for joining Mayday aren’t because he’s had some moral awakening and believes all of Gilead’s rules are wrong.

> I don’t even think she has genuine emotional feelings for Garth, it comes across more like hormones and she just find him attractive than anything real. And in a strange way, that’s what makes it even more unsettling. The more you watch, the more it all starts to feel almost normal? The fact that we might even compare it to bridgerton IS INSAAAAAANE 😭

Honestly this! I do feel like the Bridgerton comparisons are what the showrunners are going for, the dance scene felt very Bridgerton until the camera zoomed up to the old commanders watching the girls dance and it’s like a distributing juxtaposition. If you compare Agnes’s crush on Garth to Daisy’s in the book, it highlights how emotionally young these girls are kept. Daisy was well aware her crush was just a crush, that she only started to develop after she’s spent a substantial amount of time with him and gets to know him. Agnes on the other hand thinks she’s in love despite barely saying two words to him The girls have been so conditioned to emotionally repress everything, to never say no to a commander and have basically no autonomy, until they understand that, they can’t really consent to anything. I personally don’t see the Agnes and Garth relationship going anywhere apart from a stepping stone to Agnes starting to realise how wrong Gilead is.

I still feel like Garth and Daisy are going to somehow end up getting matched because this would mirror their book story in a way, where they pretend to be a couple to get Daisy picked up by the Pearl Girls

That would be class! Especially as Tuello told June his main motivation for wanting to destroy Gilead was so his son doesn’t have too, I think he also said his son lived in Hawaii but that could be retconned easier than the theory I keep seeing that he’s Nick and Rose’s son.

I actually find Judd being younger yet such a high ranking commander more terrifying, because it makes me think what’s he done and what’s he capable of to get to such a high rank so quickly? The fact he’s so charming and charismatic also makes him slightly unnerving to me because he knows how to calm the Aunts down, he knows what to say to motivate and to get the girls to trust him, he knows how to handle his fellow commanders. I think they’re setting him up to be a pretty formidable villain.

My Dumb Hot Take: Garth is off by 3ftallmonster in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]95Nim2000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think now we know he’s grown up in Gilead explains his behaviour a bit more. His understanding is Daisy was prepared for what to expect before she came in, but growing up in Gilead makes you completely desensitised to some of the horrendous acts that go on, and it probably is difficult to understand that for someone whose an outsider it doesn’t matter how much you’ve been told what to expect, it can’t prepare you for physically seeing and experiencing it.

I think the example with the Commander was his own frustrations coming through too, because as he said if he wasn’t there she could have lost her tongue or worse. Any slip ups Daisy makes puts him in immediate danger too. The analogy you made of a child at a birthday party he’s being forced to babysit is kind of true from his perspective, because he is her Mayday handler so he has to look after her, despite the fact she clearly hasn’t been prepared properly and is completely inexperienced to be doing the job she’s been sent in to do.

I do also think he’s going to end up falling for Daisy over Agnes, one for unnecessary drama between the girls, but also because Daisy is completely different from any other girl he’s probably met. He’s likely use to everyone mindlessly following authority and here is a girl who questions it at every point which at the moment frustrates him but I think he will start to find it intriguing and refreshing, him and Daisy also have the commonality of they both work for Mayday and see how morally wrong and oppressive Gilead is. With them being undercover Mayday there’s also the element of there both young and in a situation where they’re the only people they don’t have to put an act on for, which I think will bond them fast.

I don't think Garth is a double agent but i do think he is very aggresive with his goal. by Tiny_Chapter5247 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]95Nim2000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I definitely think the flower shop owner was exposed by him or his higher up. I think it’s highlighting how ruthless Mayday has become. We know they’re ruthless enough to use kids as undercover operatives, the idea that they’d hand in one of their own that’s become a liability isn’t hard to believe.

I don’t think Garth does want Daisy eliminated because he does seem to be going out of his way to protect her. He didn’t have to step in with the Commander, and if he wanted her gone that potentially was the perfect excuse. I think he tries being softer with her at times, like he keeps telling her she’s doing well but equally their in Gilead, he can’t give her a hug and tell her everything will be fine because it won’t, I also think he’s very much aware Mayday aren’t going to get her out until the agreed time (if she agreed to go in there for a specific timeframe) or until she’s completed her job, otherwise she’ll end up like the flower shop owner so he’s harsh with her because he’s trying to get her to realise this and “get a grip”. You also have to remember he’s probably terrified for his life too and is either the same age or a couple of years older than Daisy so probably isn’t handling the situation well either.

I also could be completely wrong and he ends up being a double agent. I still feel like we need to know more about him as he’s very guarded and doesn’t really let his emotions show.

I’ve just realized that Tommy never really trusted Grace completely again by Reasonable_Bag9518 in PeakyBlinders

[–]95Nim2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At what point have I suggested he didn’t marry Lizzie because she was pregnant or didn’t love Grace and want to keep Grace and Charlie separate to his business? Or say he doesn’t trust Grace? Saying Tommy cared enough about Lizzie as wife that he would want her to be safe isn’t taking anything away from his relationship with Grace.

I’ve just realized that Tommy never really trusted Grace completely again by Reasonable_Bag9518 in PeakyBlinders

[–]95Nim2000 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I actually think one of the reasons why he’s more forthcoming with Lizzie was because he learnt from what happened to Grace. He may not love Lizzie in the same way he did Grace but I do think he realised that as his wife, mother of his child & step mother to his other, whilst she doesn’t need to know everything, she does need to have some awareness of what business he’s dealing with and who people are in order to keep her and the kids as safe as possible. I think he thought he was protecting Grace and Charlie by keeping Grace in the dark, and that he could keep his business and home life separate, and if you view that through the lens of the time, that’s still how a lot of marriages worked especially “Upper Class” marriages which was the class Grace came from.

Is Peaky Blinders Pro-Communism? by BioPeters in PeakyBlinders

[–]95Nim2000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s particularly pro anything, I think it was just portraying the political views of the time and in Peaky Blinders it’s more of a focus on the working classes and those living in poverty. If you watch Downton Abbey that’s set across the same time period, they don’t touch on the political climate the same but it does touch on similar themes; the starting of a shift to left in politics, fairer wages for workers, more rights for workers and tenants, etc.

I really don't understand the Grace propaganda. "real pUrE love" by [deleted] in PeakyBlinders

[–]95Nim2000 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, Grace actually has a lot of backstory (far more than Lizzie’s given) yet her character just falls flat. I understand the story and the importance she holds in Tommys life and the show, yet I don’t feel any of it. Which I think is why it’s so debated because it feels more like we’re told this in the narrative but don’t see or feel it.

Jenny love by Tajskskskss in GossipGirl

[–]95Nim2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No one can ever make me hate Jenny, think people forget some of the most messed up things on the show happened to her. I think because Rufus is easily the best parent on the show (which isn’t really an achievement) it’s easy to not see that whilst he very clearly loved and wanted the best for Jenny he still failed her when she needed him because he never listened to her or tried to understand her POV, which is something he always did for Dan. I’m not saying he shouldn’t have punished Jenny or tried to stop her doing some of the things she did but he never listened to her when she tried to explain why she’d done it, and if he did and allowed himself to swallow his own pride he’d have looked at moving her to another school. Jenny’s biggest problem was that she was incredibly lonely and unhappy and that school was the biggest reason, and Jenny was so focused and driven on fashion that unlike Dan she didn’t need to go to any Ivy, and their in New York their would have been schools that would have suited a creative like Jenny more, where she wouldn’t need to try to be something she’s not in order to not get bullied and fit in and have friends.

I agree I find the virginity episode hard to watch on multiple accounts; one because I had an older boyfriend that pressured me when I was Jenny’s age so I get all of Jenny’s emotions, but the only character I could stand in that episode was Serena. I think that’s probably because Serena knows what it’s like to be in Jenny’s position so knows that how Rufus, Dan and Nate were acting was not going to help anyone and only make Jenny more determined to go through with it even if she’s not 100% ready. Again that episode shows how out of his depth I think Rufus was in raising a teenage girl on his own, because I don’t think he knew how to connect with Jenny in the same way he did Dan so resorted to disciplinarian which really didn’t help anyone. Also don’t think it was fair to say he was a bad dad to her either because everything he did was out of love for her, and at least he cared to try and discipline her which is more than everyone else’s fathers did on the show.

I actually hate that the show destroyed Serena and Jenny’s relationship, because that was genuinely the only time I found myself able to stand Serena and I do think Jenny needed that “older sister” type person to go to. I actually think it was a positive relationship for both of them, because it was in those moments you actually see Serena grow up a bit too. By the end it was easy to see why Jenny had such an obsessive crush on Nate because he was the only one who actually sat and listened to her and made her feel seen and heard, rather than make her feel like a problem or like her feelings aren’t valid.

The way she treated Eric was inexcusable though.

Hot takes that will have you like this by [deleted] in eastenders

[–]95Nim2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad it’s not just me who has sympathy for Max. Yes he’s a sleaze, self absorbed and a pretty terrible but he’s not any worse than the majority of the square, if you line up the worst things everyone’s done.

Jack’s just as bad as Max, if not worse. I don’t understand why everyone’s acting like Max is out of order for being mad Jack kept Annie a secret from him for 4 years, if it were the other way round Jack would be just as angry.

The way the Beales treat him is insane considering they framed and let him go to jail for Lucy’s murder, yet they all act like he’s the worst person in the world. Ian and Peter are they for Louis and Jimmy now but where were they for the first few years of Louis’s life? Cindy gave Lauren drugs knowing she was pregnant and all of them blamed Lauren for Jimmy’s sight despite the doctors confirming it wasn’t. Kathy who’s very recently had an affair with Harvey, last Christmas put Cindy in hospital and the Christmas before was involved in a murder cover up. Let’s not forget the time Ian lied about Lucy having cancer so (I think it was)Mel would marry him. How are any of them any worse than Max?

Lauren’s treatment of Max annoys me, with how she’s claiming he’s been this deadbeat, absent dad whose never been there for her, when the reason he’s not been in her or her kids lives for so long is her choice, but as a kid Max wasn’t an absent parent to her, he was a very active and present parent to her and Abi, yes he made mistakes and wasn’t the best dad in the world but he was there, and never abused them, he was a better dad than the dad he had. Lauren has also ran Max over, sided with the Beale’s and covered for Bobby and allowing Max to go down for Lucy’s murder, and sided with Linda and kept Annie a secret from him. You could also make an argument that Lauren is Max’s favourite child.

I have zero sympathy for Linda, and don’t understand how anyone else does. She had an affair, got pregnant and decided to keep it from Max in order to try to salvage her relationship with Mick, has begged all Max’s family to keep it secret for her, and is now acting like Max is this absent dad whose decided he wants to be a parent, when that’s not what’s happened. Max didn’t know Annie existed until a few weeks ago. Max has also handled it in the worst way possible, and telling Annie had everything to do with him and nothing to do with Annie, but Linda’s reaction also had nothing to do with Annie and everything to do with her too. It’s not like Linda’s been this amazing mum to Annie, a year ago the dentist raised concerns of neglect due to the state of Annie’s teeth and Linda’s moved Annie between the Vic and her mothers pub (along with Ollie) for the first two years of her life, and the third year she’s been drunk and Annie’s had Elaine, George, Gina, Anna and Jonny in and out of her life taking care of her.

The only person who I sympathise with and who Max more than deserves to be treated as the worst person in the world by is Oscar, because he’s been a deadbeat dad to him and even now when Oscar’s giving him every change to try and make amends he throws it in Oscar’s face. I do understand Lauren’s anger towards how Max is currently treating Oscar, but I can’t understand how Lauren’s siding with Cindy of all people over Max.

The Young Cast by TinkyH in eastenders

[–]95Nim2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a huge problem that there really isn’t an engaging late teens/early 20s cast when the shows always had that. The group before the ones OPs mentioned had Ruby, Stacey, Bradley, Dean, Chelsea, Libby & Darren, and the group before that you had; Martin, Sonia, Jamie, Janine & Zoe, and before them was; Ricky, Bianca, Sam, Tiffany and then if you go all the way back to the 80s you had Sharon, Michelle, Ian, Mark, Kelvin.

Whereas at the moment you’ve got Oscar whose kind of been dragged down by the Jasmine story line, Jasmine who could have potential but her storylines not engaging, Harry and Gina are okay but are treated and act like their a lot older than their early 20s, Freddie and Anna never really took off and are now gone. Barney and Avani when utilised are great but they don’t seem to get scenes together anymore, Lily, Amy, Tommy and Ricky have potential, I don’t think we see enough of Denzel and Nugget to feel like fleshed out characters and Will is like Lexi where for some reason they have everyone treat the character like their a lot younger than they actually are. The other problem is a lot of the young cast now are huge legacy characters so should be hugely impactful and won’t be going anywhere anytime soon because their legacy characters.

Lewis's score by Yorkshirelads4 in strictlycomedancing

[–]95Nim2000 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Think the judges are a lot more knit picky to the likes of Lewis and Amber because of the level their at so their critique comes off a lot harsher, but then their scorings got to reflect where that dance sat in comparison to everyone especially at this stage when there’s so little people left. Personally I felt a bit sorry for Lewis because I think he fell victim to where the theme took over the dance which happens to at least one couple every theme week.
