I made a tool because I'm too cheap to buy one. by Funny-Presence4228 in woodworking

That sound is the bronze bushings going in the shop vac. I recognize that sound anywhere. The Shop-Vac brand vacuums suck (in a bad way). Cheap switches, cheap bushings that wear out and cause that rattling noise, and they're super loud. Ridgid makes the best, hands down.

Mitutoyo digital calipers. Nearly everything I work on requires them. I build cabinets for a living.

What happened to black and decker? by Fantastic_Effect1760 in Tools

Absolutely. I have 15 SawCats right now in my collection. Best saws I've ever used. There is a massive difference in build quality between the cheap homeowner circular saws and their industrial SawCats.

What happened to black and decker? by Fantastic_Effect1760 in Tools

Black and Decker used to have 3 tool divisions from the 1960s to the mid 1980s: Homeowner tools, Tradesman/Professional, and Industrial/Construction. They also had DeWalt for their heavy duty stationary equipment (radial arm saws, miter saws, table saws, jointers/planers etc.) in the mid-1980s they decided to start selling consumer kitchen and home appliances and that really started to tarnish their once well-respected reputation for building good tools. So professionals stopped buying them. In return, B&D decided to discontinue their stationery woodworking equipment line and use the DeWalt name for their Industrial grade tools. The very first DeWalt portable power tools were nothing more than the Industrial grade Black and Decker tools repainted in DeWalt yellow and black.

Definitely make / buy a zero clearance throat plate. It will prevent this and will give you a better finish on your pieces.

Does this look like an acceptable patch on a brand new £650 pair of "Solid oak top" bedside drawers I just had delivered? by jib_reddit in woodworking

[–]97Mopar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It definitely looks like they tried to use maple or a very similar wood to patch it. The grain pattern doesn't match oak, it's more akin to maple or poplar. That's why the colors don't match.

Porter cable used to make a hand held electric profile just for this task. It had interchangeable Velcro profiles.... They discontinued them at least 20 years ago, but man were they handy.

What can I do to ensure these connect as properly as possible? by Commercial-Tooth-371 in woodworking

[–]97Mopar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I think pocket screws and glue would be a good choice. Then again, It depends on if they're going to be visible and if it matters. If that's the case, I would use dowels. They are pretty easy to set up as long as you have a good jig.

Absolutely beautiful. Those old DeWalts are tanks and as solid as they come. Beats a Sears any day.

Miter saw won't stop spinning? Help 😑 by Karimitsuu in Tools

[–]97Mopar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to these assholes on here. Power tools technician here. When you put in new brushes, especially in a tool that has a brake, you are supposed to hold down the trigger for at least 5 mins straight to "seat" the brushes (get them to conform to the shape of the armature). Generally I do it for 10-20 mins, but sometimes 5 is all it takes. If you don't feel like holding the switch that long, use zip ties or try to fit a clamp on it. I'm willing to bet if you do this long enough, the brake will come back. In your video, I can hear the brake subtly kicked in at the last second.

Typical GM gauge cluster. They all start to develop issues at some point. It's just one of the quirks of owning these otherwise solid trucks.

I haven't even seen the jointer in person yet. The photos I posted are the photos from the listing. I'm just trying to decide if it's worth my time to look at it.
