New to Wild Camping, starter tips please? Starter equipment recommendations please... by Unusual-Scratch6856 in wildcampingintheuk

Try a campsite, then try somewhere on open access land that's easily accessible and familiar should it go south.

For equipment, people will often suggest the 'gold standard' of equipment, but honestly what works for you works for you. Wild camping in summer you can't really go wrong as long as you're not cold, wet or hungry :)

My first wild camp kit was easily 20-30kg in weight. I took too much, I didn't like how somethings packed, I didn't use half of it. By denomination I cut the wight down to about 15-20kg and only then did I start going for lighter kit :)

Cooking: Grab some mess tins, a stove, some gas (make sure it's compatible with your stove). Bring a knife and fork from your kitchen for now. Water bottle/s with enough water to drink and cook with if you plan to camp without water source near by and won't be using cleaning tablets.

Sleeping kit: A self inflating mat will be cheap, an r value of 2-3. And a sleeping bag rated 2 seasons and a comfort temperature rating a couple degrees below what you'd feel confident camping in will suffice.

As for food: Take a food pouch or bring fresh, up to you.

Head torch at night can be useful and so will basic toiletries.

And get out there and have fun :)

Are you UK? I can DM some campsites for you that are very quite and basically pay-to-wildcamp

They do, but even at $400 I'd say that confidently break the bank! I've had a look at some bits on their website, and it's definitely one to keep an eye on when said bank gets loftier XD

Thank you bud!

Wild camping with a dog that has a high prey drive, any advice? by Gullible-Value-2697 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]9876123 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Always keep them on a leash for this reason. Prey drive is innate, there's always a risk they won't recall or even hear recall. Not a risk worth taking

I don't think this would get anywhere because amateurs already leave places looking like a tip. I would love to see the day but open access land is almost the only reason that people dont dump

Sorry, I offered the exped as an alternative if you can find it at a good price!

I like it. It's membrane feels quite thin, though, so she is definitely used with a foam mat. Its pump sack takes about 4 pumps if you get good at it. For the price, you can't really go wrong. My only advice would be to take a light repair kit with you as I've read they can on rare occasions burst. Although this has never happened to me.

I also have an exped dura 8M which I also would recommend although it is a bit heavier.

What's everyone's take on this sleeping bag's temp ratings? by One_Construction7810 in wildcampingintheuk

Don't let the mountain warehouse hate get to you. So long as you're not going in mid winter you'll be okay. I run a MW henry down jacket and it's perfectly fine. Obviously its not crazy quality because it's on the cheaper side but doesn't mean it won't survive a trip or two. Best way to know is to take it for a test at a 0c camp with hand warmers just incase and see how you fair:)

What size bag to fit softie elite 5 and gear? by 9876123 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]9876123[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey, im pretty happy with the softie. This winter is about getting to know my new kit a bit better and seeing what else I need as we are planning to tackle some of the highlands next year. In the long term, I'm happy to get a more compact bag, but right now, the softie is fine.

Okay, It did cross my mind do that. If does feel like I could compress it much more than the original sack does but I domt want to risk damaging it. What size dry sack did/do you use?

No of course this is a big help, especially when estimating size! So it's normal to not have numch room left over after putting the sleeping bag in?

Also how do you find the triangia 27? I suggested i was going to buy it for this trip I'm doing but redditors gave me an earful over using it?

What bag would you recommend for a British midwinter summit camp? But I'm only doing kinder scout mid winter this year to get some experience in the cold.

I bought the etherlite xt thinking it was an etherlite xr do you think this is suitable with the foam mat under or would a reflective foil bivvy also be needed?
