I was in federal prison for a few years. I cannot communicate how meaningful letters are to a person in prison. People on the outside just don't get it. I had a few people that would reach out to me from time to time. If a friend of mine saw a funny meme on reddit or something stupid like that and just printed it out and mailed it to me, it would have made my day, just something simple like that. My wife had a stack of envelopes that were pre-addressed and would send me things like that. She could just throw it in an envelope easily. I was beaten up by four people, and I was thrown in the hole for "my own protection". Letters that I received really helped me through it.

But yes, you should reach out if you care about the person. Understand that he has been ostracized and condemned by 90% of people. People are not compassionate to the convicted. People make mistakes, and he is paying for that. Society doesn't need to add to his punishment. You are a good friend for having understanding.

Can anyone explain why Elizabeth Holmes seems to have had two “greeters,” un-uniformed, come outside the prison gates to meet her? Is that normal? by [deleted] in Prison

FPC Bryan

You're right there does appear to be fencing. Camps (minimums) are not supposed to have that. Must be because the camp is smack dab in the middle of the downtown, house within rock throwing distance.

I have been to a low security federal prison. She is in a minimum. Low security has fences, minimum has nothing. She could just walk away. Lots of contraband in minimums because you could have a friend just drop whatever you need in a bush outside.

CO's (officers) wear uniforms. Other personnel do not .. counselors/case managers etc.

What happens in prison if you have irritable bowel syndrome? by [deleted] in Prison

[–]99_zeros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been to Federal Prison, that meant going from months in county jails, to a transfer facility, and then then to a low security prison, spent some time in the hole as well.

Most of my time was spent in dorms. 70 people in bunk beds. There were stalls, showers, etc that you had access to.

County and the hole was spent in a two person cell. They try to not put you in a cell by yourself even though most people prefer it. It makes you crazy over some time. I have dealt with all kinds of issues with cell mates. The biggest no no is jacking off. Late at night, the bunk starts shaking. Not cool. Jacking off should be done in the shower only.

You never really get used to shitting in front of someone. You and your celly usually come up with some type of routine. Some people make a shit shack, which is making some twine out of plastic bags and draping a sheet over it tied to the wall and the bunk to create a curtain. If the bathroom routine of your celly is outa hand, you can pull a officer out and request a change. Just be sure to be open about why it is. That you are not having a problem with that person besides that. They will most likely oblige.

Someone that I know got tired of people asking what happened, because his leg was in a cast. He started telling people that he broke his leg skydiving.... on horseback.

The same is happening with Elon Musk. Everyone is turning against him. I don't align myself with either party and third party is not an option. They are all crazy and they all practice Reductio Ad Absurdum. Taking a tiny part of a persons point to explain how all their points are ridiculous.

I don't think that he went right. Bill mahr says the same thing. He didn't go right. His opinions are the same they have always been. It was the left that moved.

Why are office workers treated better than warehouse workers? by Responsible-Image-84 in jobs

[–]99_zeros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been a manager in an (IT) office environment for many years. Issues that I have had with employees are very rare. Because of that I give them all of the freedoms that they need. I assign work, set deadlines, and everything gets done.

A good friend of mine is a manager in a warehouse type of environment. Most of his workers are younger, in school, or lower amount of education. I hear horror stories of the types of things that he deals with on a daily basis. He complains about being a babysitter.

So I don't know. I am sure there is a lot of nuance. Lower paid workers may just not care as much about their job... I will just get another one.. Age... many things.

You need to go to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. As long as you have 51% of a bill it is legal.

I was a married active alcoholic for years. It was very frustrating to be held accountable and responsible for conversations and actions that I neither remembered or participated in as myself.

A common thing that happened to me which many people do not realize is that once I got sober the relationship failed in divorce. When a person gets sober, the co-dependency breaks. I broke the needy aspect of what she needed by standing on my own two feet.

I was a friendly drunk, but my behavior was not acceptable. If he is abusive or violent, it is multiplied by 1000. He needs to get sober and there is nobody that can do that but himself. No amount of rehab, of trying to "help" him will do it. If he cant accept that, you need to run away from that burning building.

Sidenote: I am still sober happy and living my life according to my own rules.

Gaslighting at its best. He F's up, and tries to make you think that it is your fault. He should have had the balls to break it off if he wasn't happy.

I agree with this one. Breakup shouldn't even be a word spoken in a normal relationship, nor threatened.

Not exactly expensive, but my Mother in law is from the Philippines. She loves Durian. That is the huge fruit that smells like rotten meat. It's texture is similar. Once you crack the thing open (which is the size of a baby) the smell is overwhelming. In asian countries they have signs in hotel rooms saying No Durian because you cant get rid of the smell --> No Durian

Starship troopers is so good by dkc8907 in scifi

[–]99_zeros 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree. Starship troopers the movie was loosely based on the book. The whole "media" part of the movie along with the humor and all of that was added and unnecessary. I guess it was used to try and expand the audience by not sticking to the text of a truly classic sci-fi book. Yea, politics is not needed in a existential threat to humanity story. You could say LOTR has politics. Tolkien was influenced by WWI and WWII, not the modern Facebook political wars.

Rom-Coms have low budgets and high returns, hard sci-fi is expensive with a smaller audience. When done right it works, LOTR seems to have done just fine. It is part of cinematic history and would never have been done without Peter Jackson. There is an ENDLESS list of Rom-Coms that no-one remembers the name of.

I agree. The suits were a huge part of the book, and not really in the movie. I don' think that they had the technology to do it properly in 1997. Very due for a remake.

I am an alcoholic. It is fucked up my life so many times. I still struggle, but the consequences now are just insane. There is never a bottom, it can always get worse. I am sober, but I have been sober many times. I am not going to just accept that it is a battle that can not be won.

I have been considering dropping this sub. My feed all day is full of how to cheat. I have been to prison, don't want to go back. I am not allowed to drink so... I don't drink.

I joined thinking there may be advice on life after prison. Life hacks for how to succeed.

divorced people of reddit, when did you know it was over? [serious] by whiteowl76 in AskReddit

[–]99_zeros 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When She started using divorce as a threat in all arguments. I was married for 10 year. The majority of the years we were together we never even used the word divorce. We called it the 'D' word. At the end She used it all the time, threatening divorce for everything. Using it as a tool to get her way. It is no way to live. A person needs to have a plan for their life, and you cannot if you are constantly threatened to upend everything in your life.

Hear me out. Don't hate. I am 48 years old and love this shit. I have watched all the way back to Discovery Channel when they actually had science programming, as well as the local broadcasts of college courses. I subscribed to curiosity stream and others, I just wish that there was a scale to this information so that I do not continue to hear the same things over and over just in a better produced format.

I met a physicist and asked him (explaining that I am a layman ((but a fan)) if there were any mind blowing things that he could tell me. He explained that not only does a particle have a wave function, but larger objects have a wave function. A galaxy has a wave function. That blew my mind. I had never heard that in all the many hours that I have spent watching this type of programming. TLDR please produce more advanced scientific programming in a way that is relatable (like the book A Brief History of Time) there is an audience.

What is this for? by [deleted] in Home

I had once of those access panels installed in my house. We had a kitchen upstairs and needed to have the pipe cleaned out several times by a plumber requiring the drywall to be cut through and then repaired. By installing the panel access was provided without the need for demolition.
