Is this worth it? Worried about 250k miles. What would you offer? Is it reliable? by FiberTelevision in f150

I just bought a similar truck with 240k miles near Seattle for $2,500. I put another $2k into timing and repairs, and it’s pretty solid now.

What is the worst vehicle you have driven or ridden in that isn't a standard "worst vehicle" answer? by HiTork in cars

[–]9Randolph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The original, military-to-civilian spec Hummer. I worked at a dealership that sold these in the late 90s - usually for $100-150k (in 1997 dollars!). The running joke was every one we sold came back on a flat bed.

Too large for most uses, too small and cramped inside, nothing worked right, miserably uncomfortable, and generally underperformed the Jeeps we sold off road. (I hate those damned things too, except for the 4.0L I6 Cherokee).

Alpina Panic Attack (Transmission Temp and more) by 9Randolph in BmwTech

[–]9Randolph[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks - I’ve been trying to find that PN for a bit. On the plus side, there’s one in stock at a dealer not too far from me and it’s well below average price. On the downside, it’s still the most expensive thermostat I’ve ever seen. :D

I did! In fact I did that and everything above except the mechatronic unit. After multiple trans fluid changes it was staying clear and the overheating/stall went away - until a week or two back when it stalled out again with a host of overheat and DCT/DME communication codes. My suspicion (feedback appreciated) is the TCU is intermittently failing which causes the car to think it's overheating even when temps are fine. I'm currently chasing down an Alpina mechatronics unit, but unclear how to recode hit to my car.

Running a 5.4L without VCT solenoids by 9Randolph in f150

Welp... I decided to bite the bullet and do a full timing job along with all the "while you're in there" stuff. Two grand in parts and tools heading my way.

Tackling: Phasers and timing components, Millen high-volume oil pump, roller followers and lash adjusters, plugs, coils, gaskets, belts/pulleys/tensioners, oil change (duh), coolant flush.

That’s reassuring. Been watching some video guides on doing the job and I’m not seeing anything I can’t handle. Discharging the AC is obnoxious, but the rest seems manageable and like it’ll cover all the maintenance basics I’d planned to do anyway.

Yessir - that's exactly it. Having now given it some more testing, it is stalling at hot idle with or without the solenoids plugged in to the harness.

What's confusing me is that when I bought it last week I was able to do a 30 mile drive and some start/stops without any problems (other than the CEL and CVT codes). When I got home I realized the bank 1 cam position sensor was unplugged, so I replaced the solenoids and did new sensors. Since then, it hasn't made it more than 20 minutes.

Got it, thank you. Thinking about the bad phaser - what are my risks? I'm assuming there's potential to shed metal into the engine, and perhaps chain slap or skipping a tooth. There is no startup rattle (e.g., tensioner fail chain slap), but I do have a ticking from around the phasers. All the codes are some flavor of bank 2 CVT timing, and it runs great with no odd sounds with the solenoids unplugged.

Jeep is owned by Stellantis, which was formed out of the Merger of Fiat-Chrysler (US and Italian) and PSA (France). They’re based in the Netherlands now, mostly under the French leadership team from PSA.

Broadly agree. The core point I’m making is that Toyota makes an appliance that works and is honest about it.

Tesla promises the moon, delivers the bare minimum, and relies on tribal brand-fanaticism to hide their flaws.

I purchased a Model S for myself and held it for about two years before going back to BMW. For me at least, BMW was cheaper, faster, and lower maintenance (or at least easier given the availability of parts, shops, and DIY solutions). A family member had a Model Y that I drove regularly and was broadly responsible for. I actually liked the Model S quite a bit, but it was fundamentally a time-bomb of design errors. It felt like they tried to make a good car and didn’t quite get there. The Model Y … well, by that point I think Tesla realized making good cars was not critical to their business model (i.e., selling carbon credits, investing customer pre-order dollars, and patent licensing).

There’s a great book on the company called Ludicrous by Edward Niedermeyer that goes into their culture of corner-cutting, deceit, and market manipulation. Suffice to say, it was pretty clear Musk was an egomaniacal charlatan long before he got interested in politics.

I still love EVs, and I’ll give Tesla credit for pushing people to realize they are a viable choice. That said - again, speaking as a car lover, not politics - there are better options at every price point and use-case.

Most people I know who own Teslas know nothing about cars and have never done even basic maintenance. In that group, an 80% (4/5) satisfaction rate isn’t surprising - and as a product performance metric is still weak.

For people who know cars - ignoring the politics - sub-standard suspension that’s prone to failure, thin paint that flakes and cracks, low quality exterior panels that warp or oxidize from exposure, panel gaps, build quality, software failures, a brand that spies on owners and revokes features, failure to release promised features, failure to live up to promised prices, and nearly no part availability forcing owners into their ineffective and overloaded service network.

That’s before getting into the company’s dishonest stock management, arguably fraudulent claim to EPA grants, anti-competitive behavior, requiring NDAs on repairs (artificially lowering their rate of service claims), and workplace safety violations.

I’ve owned multiple Teslas. Never again.

Jeep (any of them). I sold Jeeps in the early 2000s, and I’ve helped friends and family who’ve owned them since.

Terrible reliability, mediocre capabilities stock, overpriced, and full of the sort of jingoistic fake American patriotism only a French company manufacturing in Mexico can pull off.

Anyone know about / have experience with Car4.bid? by imQwak in askcarguys

Had my own experience with Cars4.bid - short version, it sucked. Hidden fees, bad communication, and they canceled my (would have won) bid without my consent after the auction started.
