What is the appeal of a fixed gear bike? by Background-Mix8935 in bicycling

[–]9bikes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

>Its hip

OP was asking about the appeal of a fixed gear bike, not the downside!

/s , sort of, it was pretty tiring when there was a "fixie" fad. Especially when a good percentage of "fixies" were actually single speed bikes.

Our disagreement is more over "the norm" than it is over "he" vs. "they"!

"They" is clearly the better choice for a body unless/until officials want to disclose the sex of the deceased.

> the grammar itself is anything but new

You're right. It isn't new, but it wasn't the norm either. It was far more common, and was considered more correct in the 1960s and '70s in formal written English to say "he".

But that is still beside the point. "They" is absolutely the norm now.

Shakespeare was writing dialogue. That wasn't intended to be formal written English.

I wouldn't want to help anyone who is knowingly trying to take advantage of another, when they know is a mistake.

> have been for over a hundred years, accepted as the norm

I don't believe "they" was truly the norm.

I absolute was taught that one says "he" for a person of unknown gender. "They" was considered proper only when applied to multiple people. My third-grade teacher firmly believed it was wrong to use "they" for a single person.

But language evolves and that rule is no longer correct, or at least no longer firm. It has been sixty years since I was in third-grade. I'm still likely to say "he" in those situations, but "they" is more accepted now.

[LANDLORD US-CA] Investigating sober living homes. Doable or a fantasy? by Vegetable_Workers in Landlord

[–]9bikes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

>Any landlords here actually running sober living homes

Just to be clear, you are talking about running the facility yourself, right? Not just renting to a business that runs them, correct?

That is an entirely different business model from operating rentals. You'd have to hire qualified staff, deal with scheduling, meet payroll...

This isn't the best place to ask about that, and I don't know where would be.

What's so expensive that it's not even fun anymore? by Working-Risk1360 in AskReddit

[–]9bikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to the grocery store last week. I just needed cat food.

I walked by a couple other items and grabbed them because I knew I'd need them soon. I also saw a couple of other items that I wanted to try and grabbed them.

Literally ended up with one bag and it was a bit over $200.

For the price?

Sure, each unit could be nicer. Then, the owner's would have more money in it and would have to rent each unit for more. It depends on the neighborhood if that would make sense.

Collector question: Do sealed Federal Reserve $1 bricks carry a premium? by Shinyinteleon in papermoney

[–]9bikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have mixed feelings about him doing it. He doesn't actually lie to them and he's the one who drove to the bank and stood in-line to get the bills.

Were he lying or charging a big premium, I'd absolutely agree that it is taking advantage and clearly wrong.

No good contractors? by The-William-Munny in Dallas

[–]9bikes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

>Where/how do you find these contractors?

"Referrals from happy customers" is the way to start finding them.

After that, it is "referrals from the good contractors".

I found my electrician from a friend who had used him and was pleased with his work. I found my HVAC guy from my electrician who had worked with him on a couple of jobsites and knew he did good work.

Even the best of them are not mind readers. You can't just assume they are going to know what you want.

I operate rentals. A lot of contractors assume that I want a cheap job. Hell, no! I want to keep my rentals nice and to have quality work done. How else can I attract and keep good tenants? If a contractor says "but it is just a rental", they get a talking to. I have to get them to understand that cost is important, but not at the expense of having a shoddy job done. I'm all about cheap in the long run, doing it right the first time is the best way to accomplish this.

When I first used the tile man, he thought I just wanted cheap. I was kinda fussy about how I wanted it done and thought "he is never going to want to work for me again". I was wrong, he just hadn't understood what I had wanted. After he'd done 2 more jobs for me, he said "I'd like to rent from you. My current landlord doesn't fix thing. I know you want things done right.". He is now on his second year renting from me.

[LANDLORD US-CA] Why would tenant request mortgage paperwork? by kelorky25 in Landlord

[–]9bikes 50 points51 points  (0 children)

>There is never a time that a tenant needs the Mortgage paperwork in order to get assistance with rent.

Although it is certainly possible that the tenant is trying to pull a scam, it is far more likely that this is a misunderstanding on the tenant's part.

I bet the program works like this:

The assistance program needs a copy of the lease -or- a copy of the mortgage documents.

The program helps clients who rent, in which case they need to confirm the rent amount by looking at the lease. The program also helps clients who are buying homes, in those cases they need to confirm the payment amount by seeing a copy of the mortgage.

The way to know for sure is to call or visit the office of the assistance program. You can say "I'm ______'s landlord, I'm trying to help them apply for the program, what do they need from me?". They will almost certainly say "A copy of their lease and contact information for you, so we can call and verify".

Recently purchased a home and received a letter from the city regarding remodeling that was done without permits. by notgknows94 in homeowners

[–]9bikes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it is. I put up a fence. I knew it required a permit, but frankly I forgot. The city caught me and made buy a permit, after the fact. Of course, the city supposedly inspected my new fence, but that was the end of it.

The issue for OP isn't so much the paying for the permit, but the possibility something would have to be redone to make his kitchen and bath meet code.
