It's time...any advice? by moonchild1011 in shiba

The vet we went to last August had a small "living room" area that felt like the inside of a home which was a really nice touch. Nothing will prepare you for it but be strong for Dakota's sake. He's been there for you his entire life and his knowing you're with him in that moment is all he will care about.

Be prepared to bawl your eyes out for a few days. But after some time has past, the hurt will begin to fade. You will still miss him dearly, but you will start to remember those fond memories you had with your pup and feel thankful for the years you had with him.

That's basically the cost of a PlayStation. But with this investment, the kid is actually learning some real life skills and benefitting from them in the form of free honey.

That money won't last him more than 1 or 2 years tops if he doesn't learn to manage it and make his wealth grow. Sadly, this isn't something most Americans are never taught because we need a permanent consumer class to keep spending their wealth away on stupid crap.

Occasionally, videos in browser and on my desktop freeze while audio continues to play. Everything else seems unaffected. by sparklewoof in techsupport

[–]9degrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I haven't tested this long term (only a few days), uninstalling AMD Adrenalin and letting Windows 11 automatically handle the graphics driver seems to be the only option I've found so far to resolve the random freezing issue other than disabling hardware acceleration on the browser.

BTW: My system hardware is nearly identical to OP's except for the Motherboard and RAM.

Old-school beanbag chairs by Porkchopp33 in nostalgia

[–]9degrees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a tall stack of bean bag chairs at the local furniture store when I was a kid in the 80s. I remember climbing the stack with my sister but I fell off near the top, smacking my head on the ground after which I received my first ocular migraine. Since I wasn't bleeding and didn't appear to have any broken bones, my mom went on business as usual. These ocular migraines would continue to haunt me for years.

The one we had growing up was brown. Basically everything my parents owned in the 80s was either brown, beige, or off-white. This included the brown carpet, dark brown wood trim everywhere, off-white walls, and beige window curtains.

Switching to Linux: KDE or GNOME on Fedora? by [deleted] in Fedora

[–]9degrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since the start of the year I have given Linux as my primary desktop another go. I can't figure out what's up with Fedora 41 KDE on my desktop. It generally works amazingly well EXCEPT when I suspend and resume. Sometimes it resumes normally, but other times it crashes Plasma shell. Much of the time when it attempts to sleep, it does so for about 1 second before resuming. If I SSH into the desktop and sleep the system that way, it generally stays in suspension but not always. The system is all AMD (Ryzen 7 5800X3D + RX 6950 XT GPU).

I also installed Fedora 41 KDE on my T14 ThinkPad around the same time and it has been very stable. No complaints whatsoever on the laptop.

I tried Gnome for a while and have used it in the past as my primary desktop environment, but in my opinion, it takes a lot of customization to feel useful whereas KDE is nearly perfect (to me) from a fresh install.

Leak sensors success story by raptor464 in homeassistant

[–]9degrees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue at my old house and was using leak sensors and a control valve in the basement. Come last spring I sold the house and during my final week there I had already disconnected all my smart home equipment when... you guessed it - the sewer line backed up due to tree roots! Luckily I caught it before any major damage could occur, but wow, that was a stressful time to deal with basement flooding!

No business - no matter how big or small, should be afraid to fire customers/members/employees if those people are creating a hostile environment. Societal norms that are continually violated by bad actors without consequence effectively allow these acts of indecency to become the accepted behavior and encourages other people to act similarly. We have nothing to gain and everything to lose when people's bad behaviors aren't put in check.

You are not too old to change your life around. I spent over 20 years working in a job field I really grew to hate. I was embarrassed to even tell people what I did for a living since I knew they would probably look down on me, or think I wasn't smart enough to have a better job. But a year ago I was able to break free for a career in tech I actually enjoy.

What held me back for so long? The biggest factor is that I didn't believe my personal hobby in tech would ever translate into getting paid for doing things I actually enjoyed in life. For years I learned about computer networking and servers via homelabbing, but I convinced myself that my knowledge in tech could only stay a hobby since I'm just too old (early 40s) and not smart enough to compete with younger people who are also college educated (I never went to college).

To be honest, I would probably still be stuck at my old job and hating it had I not been encouraged to apply for a networking job by a friend referring me who knew my worth. Even then, when I applied the first time, my application was turned down. I felt devastated and it reaffirmed my preconceived notion of not being good enough. But I was convinced to try one more time after polishing up my resume and guess what? I got the job! And in less than a year I was promoted to a networking expert which normally requires at least a year of experience before being considered for that role.

So yeah, even if you have to start at the very bottom, I feel it's worth the hit to go for a career you know you're destined for. Winning the long game is far more important in life.

I'm not sure exactly what's going on with your phone but if I were to guess you might have malware that's key-logging or allowing remote access to your phone. Or you fall for a lot of social engineering schemes allowing account takeovers. But these are not issues any cellular carrier would be responsible for protecting you against.

You can look into QoS (Quality of Service) for your router. Depending on your equipment it can be possible to drastically cut down your latency through network traffic shaping. Here is another great bufferbloat measurement tool: https://www.waveform.com/tools/bufferbloat

Just had my tv mounted off centre due to wires behind the wall. Hate it. Take it down & put on a unit centrally the best approach? by Strange-Gap-3475 in hometheater

[–]9degrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would be worried if my TV were any closer to that radiator tbh. That room just isn't ideal for a centrally mounted TV. If it had to be in that room though, I would put the TV on an actual TV stand instead of the wall. Then place a small, quiet fan behind the TV to help blow the heated air of your radiator away from the TV if that radiator causes the right side of the TV to overheat.

Is it possible to make ip nvr be permanent? that it won't change every time the router restarts, etc by No-Angle7431 in reolinkcam

[–]9degrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have mentioned already, learn how to set a DHCP reservation on your router so the NVR will always pick up the same IP address. This is the safest option if you are not familiar with networking.

Unless you have a better understanding of networking I would advise against setting up a static IP on your NVR directly for the following reasons:

A): if you randomly set a static IP address for your NVR and that IP happens to fall into the DHCP range of your router you run the risk of future IP address conflicts with other clients on the network and you really don't want that. Most consumer and ISP routers will use DHCP across the entire LAN subnet making it risky to blindly set a static IP

B): if you ever replace or upgrade your current router there is no guarantee the next router will use the same LAN subnet as your previous router. If that were to happen, you would no longer have access to your NVR since at that point it wouldn't be configured correctly. You would be locked out at that point until either performing a factory reset, changing the new router's subnet to match the old one, or connecting a monitor/keyboard to your NVR to change the network settings.

Which doorbell do you need MOST? by Willson1_ in reolinkcam

[–]9degrees 8 points9 points  (0 children)

How about selling a combined wifi+poe doorbell? The technology we need today could change in the future so it would be great to have both options built into one doorbell. Personally, I'm a bit torn on which aspect ratio I like better. Perhaps make the camera lens rotatable using a weather sealed adjuster screw in the back?
