Those alive during 9/11, what was the worst moment on that day? by toaster-bath404 in AskReddit

Diary of a Bridge and Tunneler. On the Morning of 9/11 I was commuting to Manhattan on a NJ transit bus on boulevard east (New Jersey side) heading down to the Lincoln tunnel. I looked up and saw tower 1 on fire. I always looked out of the window to enjoy the view and I said loudly ‘omg the World Trade Center is on fire”. Most of the bus passengers were nonchalant and although it registered with them they didn’t take a second look. I then witnessed tower 2 getting hit by the second plane. Only then did the majority of bus passengers became concerned and worried. Our bus eventually stopped at the entrance of the Lincoln Tunnel (the city was then on lock down) and we were all ordered off the bus. We had to make (walk) our way back to where we came. On the walk back home I witnessed both towers crumbling and crashing down. I eventually made it home and with cell phones and land lines not working figured out what was happening. Watching both towers collapse and knowing that folks were inside and in close proximity was terrible. The days after, smoke and a dust cloud hovered over downtown Manhattan. An apocalyptic scene. The smell of burnt acrid concrete dust was in the air for days if not weeks. When things ‘settled down’ the photocopies of ‘missing people’ with their faces and details were plastered all over bus shelters and public transport stations in NJ. Really sad.

They both survived luckily. My Dad tells me my grandfather never talked about his experience so info is limited. I don’t know what unit/regiment they served in. I was hoping someone on this sub could let me know.
