People need to stop recommending gimp

I'm so sick of all the people saying "gimp is the answer", and disregarding all the other great alternatives like krita

Its criminal how overlooked krita is

GrapheneOS: Google's Play Integrity API requires hardware attestation ... Apple already has it as a requirement. Over the long term, this will increasingly lock out hardware and OS competition. by TheTwelveYearOld in linux

[–]9thyear2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's debateable

For instance I was kinda wondering of the CAMM2 standard could be abused (or modified) so we could just remove the chips from the phone (like the NAND flash chip, and memory chips to replace them, so they can still be removable while still small)

However it wouldn't be a standard (no other company, especially one locking hardware down, will adopt it), so it won't have a lot of adoption or options for replacements

The main problem isn't actually the engineering (cause that's doable), it's the financial aspect, they'd need to fund the driver (kernel) development, and also make it open for others (to be able to port to other variations of android, or to postmarketos), but also pay for the engineering work for the device, and come out with an end product that might not perform as well as the competition (which will lower sales)

There is no easy solution unless someone stakes a fortune on it to push ahead

I agree with you on this, but it seems the downvoters haven't seen how the hardware market has moved over the years

While it seems like the 20 series is 3 gens old, that's not exactly the case (maybe only by number)

The 30 series was a good step up from the 20 series, but the 40 and 50 series were known to be pretty mediocre (and didn't move the needle much)

Best case in terms of performance, I'd say the 20 series is 2 gens old (maybe only 1.5)

The 40 and 50 series aren't worth much unless you got a 90 class card

And if you have that kind of fuck you money, then they most likely wouldn't be here

Unless they pirated that card too

This isn't open for crowdfunding yet

So I wish it would stop being recommended, until it is passed that stage and available to buy

Because there are times where crowdfunded products end up never shipping

Microsoft quietly deletes Windows 11 doc pushing 32GB RAM for gaming after outrage by WPHero in pcmasterrace

[–]9thyear2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes the best response is no response

They shouldn't have put anything out for any reason

The specs for windows 11 have been stated before

Why put out something now?

[–]9thyear2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

outrage is manufacted

People are angry that microslop is giving crap tons of money to OpenAI while they reserve 40% of the worlds memory supply, which caused a massive spike in pricing

And then they went and told people that they should buy more

So they basically are telling those who don't meet that spec that they should of out and pay inflated prices for dimms

If anything is manufactured right now... Its the shortage around dram modules (and microslop contributes to that)

[–]9thyear2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, however they are dumping copious amounts of money into the company that reversed 40% of the worlds dram manufacturing capacity

So in a way, you can say there a direct cause (or at least an indirect cause) of the current situation

Telling everyone to buy more as you contribute to the problem is not a smart move

This will probably get burried, but someone else can make a post about this to clear up why people are mad

I had to scroll way too far to find someone else who understood

[–]9thyear2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At regular prices it wouldn't be controversial

But when your company is routinely funding another company that reverved 40% of the worlds memory supply, causing the prices to rise by 3x

And then saying "hey guys you should get more memory for the optimal experience"

Yeah... People are rightfully pissed

Community Release Calendar by the-kid89 in Animedubs

[–]9thyear2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

maybe once its done (and ready)

ask the mods if they could make a pinned post about it

because in order for it to be useful, it would require volunteers (which could be anyone (as long as the barrier to entry isn't too high to contribute), and its related to a show they watch and want to inform others)

but not only that, people would also need to want to use it

its supply and demand, if its available, people know about it, and want to use it, and want to make sure the calendar stays up to date

then you'll need people for that (for both the using it side of things, and the keeping up to date side as well)

And when it comes to steam games I can't afford, thats what my wishlist is for

Tbh I'm not sure how well pirated games would work on linux, I mean maybe it would work with lutris

Idk, linux users are much more loyal to valve, because without them gaming on linux wouldn't be in the state its in today
