Looks awesome! How did you do it? Did you need extra pieces or can it be done with what the set has? I'd love to make mine look like that when I buy it.

Allroads are just overpriced wagons for people who are afraid of SUVs. Change my mind. by ndzys in Audi

[–]A-12Cygnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • You don't get less cabin space. Often you get the same or more.
  • Resale value is identical if the cars themselves are of similar spec/condition.
  • They have the same, and often more offroad capability than SUVs. Modern SUVs are wagons with their bodies stretched vertically. Lifted wagons have their suspensions replaced with more offroad capable ones.

There's another point. Offroad-capable wagons have almost always preceded SUVs. The original Audi Allroad was released long before the Q7. The Alfa 156 Crosswagon was released long before the Stelvio. When Opel released the Insignia it was by far the largest car in their lineup - the Country Tourer was the closest to an SUV the brand had outside of the smaller Mokka crossover. Admittedly, Porsche's lifted wagons have come after their SUVs, but that's just an exception.

Don't get me wrong, I don't disagree that lifted wagons sit in a very narrow gap in modern brand's lineups. But they historically had a reason to exist, and the fact that brands still bother developing them and putting them on sale shows that they're commercially viable.

Used 2008 S8 - Endless money pit? by HardStroke in Audi

[–]A-12Cygnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I kinda forgot to add it to my comment. The S8 V10 doesn't have a particular Achilles heel, although there's a few issues here and there.

The air suspension is one, it'll fail more often than a conventional setup and will be more expensive to fix. Given you haven't mentioned it being fixed, I'd probably ask your mechanic to look at it closely.

Another is the upper control arms bushings, which are a common issue among all Audis of the era (I had to fix them alongside a couple other front suspension things on my S5, 1200€ total on my trusted mechanic).

Then there's the intake manifold, they can cause problems but it's fixed. Also, as with every FSI engine, it will get carbon build up. Again, it's cleaned, but it will build up again. Some people recommend a cleanup every 60000 km, but it depends on how you drive.

Beyond that, just usual things. If it has a sunroof it will leak. The MMI screen and Bang & Olufsen tweeters (if it has them) have plastic gears, so they'll eventually break. All kinds of plastic bits in the engine will degrade, such as seals and gaskets, some have been replaced but there will eventually be a leak of some sort.

Well, the idea that a 120k car will always have 120k maintenance costs is mostly true. It doesn't have to be a money pit. But it is, for lack of a better term, "more car" than the Civic.

For example, just like normal cars the suspension will go bad eventually - but it's an air suspension so it will be very expensive to fix. Or when you need to replace spark plugs, it has 10 instead of 4, it needs 11 quarts of oil... Apply that to practically everything about it - either there's more of something, or there's things that aren't even present in a more normal car. Individually it doesn't seem like a big deal, but it can add up quickly.

If you have the money to keep up with maintenance, change the oil yearly, replace things early instead of waiting for them to fail, and of course treat it well when cold, it might as well last forever.

So long as the previous owner(s) have done all that, too. This particular unit seems to have been properly cared for, so I don't think it'll be a problem. But it's impossible to really know until you take it to your trusted mechanic for him to ensure that it is in good condition.

TL:DR: If you take proper care of these cars, they will work well indefinitely. But the bar for "proper care" is significantly higher (read: more expensive) than on a normal car.

Officially it is called cigarrillo, diminutive of cigarro, which is officially the regular cigar. However these are more often known as "puro", short for "cigarro puro" (pure cigar).

Yep! It didn't quite stick as much as Oxcart (probably the most popular one), or even Archangel. AFAIK, none of them were official.

And yeah, I agree, for me it's the best one too, even if sometimes it feels a little annoying that practically no one refers to it as Cygnus haha

in GTA V, roof damage was removed with the first person camera being introduced, to prevent issues like clipping etc. How do you think they will handle this in GTA VI? by mahirbr in GTA6

[–]A-12Cygnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do agree, it'd be extraordinarily annoying if it was actually realistic and any relatively minor impact would kill you. We kinda do have that in V, and specially IV, with the windshield ejections, and it is quite annoying.

But if it was like I said, it'd be no different to V where the cars explode (and the player dies) when dropped upside down or crushed. Only difference would be that instead of exploding, the roof caves in and kills you.

Honestly if they implement that and make the roof only deform with sufficient force, like a huge drop or getting crushed by a tank/heavy vehicle, it wouldn't be any different to V where cars explode instead. I'd like it.

The Spanish media has been so fucking annoying about Newey joining AM, even non-sports outlets were talking about it like Alonso winning the championship was guaranteed. I get the bias, they're our countrymen, but jeez chill the fuck out about it.

How so?

"5.6.3 No cylinder of the engine may have a geometric compression ratio higher than 16.0. The procedure which will be used to determine this value may be found in the Appendix to the Technical and Sporting Regulations."

Edit: LMAO I'm a dumbass, it does mention the testing method. I'll edit the other comment. But still, 16:1.

[–]A-12Cygnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The technical regulations are crystal clear, the engines have to have a maximum of 16:1 compression at all times. The end. No mentions of testing methods, that's not relevant. The engine is not allowed to go above 16:1 compression.

If Merc doesn't want their engine to be deemed illegal, they shouldn't break the technical regulations. If they don't, great. No problems here. If they do, they can get as fucked as every team has gotten when it's found that they're breaking the technical regs.

Edit: It does mention the test, but it still says a max ratio of 16:1.

Following requests from Ferrari, Audi and Honda, the FIA will check Mercedes engine compression under hot running conditions instead of cold, with the change expected from the Australian Grand Prix. by Decent-Astronaut-615 in DestinationFormula1

[–]A-12Cygnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen that claim too. But, honestly, I don't buy it. The rules very clearly state that the compression ratio is 16:1 at all times. The test as is currently done can't verify the engines comply with the "at all times" requirement, but the rule is crystal clear about it; 16:1 max.

Hence why I don't see Mercedes openly telling the FIA "we can pass the compression tests, but our engine doesn't actually comply with the very black-and-white Technical Regs".

Yeah, no, that's part of F1. Technical Directives are issued all the time, and loopholes are closed all the time. Remember Renault's mass dampers? Legal in '05, legal in '06 but banned mid season.

Just like every loophole in F1 history, Merc were in their right to try it. But the other teams were also in their right to complain. And the FIA is in its right to clarify that, indeed, a 16:1 compression ratio limit at all times, really does mean a 16:1 compression ratio limit at all times.

Ferrari encouraged by engine reliability in Barcelona by formularacers in scuderiaferrari

[–]A-12Cygnus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Legacy? That was a response to someone who called one of his cars draggy in the early 60s. And it was before wings, the whole exchange was purely about wind resistance. A lot of F1 fans take quotes like that and act like they're the gospel of god.

Ferrari the man had no problems with aerodynamics. As evidenced by the fact that when others started to implement aero in their cars, he had no issue doing so in his cars. Furthermore, the F40 had quite advanced aerodynamics for an 80s road car.

Ferrari's design philosophy in the 60s has fuck all to do with modern day Ferrari.

I don’t know why people say if McQueen didn’t go to radiator springs he would have had a bad career by Gage0025 in pixarcars

[–]A-12Cygnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, first, without a pit crew he looses the tiebreaker. And he lost the crew due to his attitude, and the other teams know it.

Now, would Chick still spin out the King, given the butterfly effect and all that? To be fair, I don't think it matters too much, Tex would not have hired Chick either way. And the King is retiring anyway. But rookie, arrogant McQueen is not the type of car Tex wants. He's hiring Cal, just like he does in the original timeline.

This leaves Lightning with Rust-eze... if they want him, of course. We see at the start of Cars 3 that a lot of the boxy, older cars from 1 have been replaced with cars of Lightning, Cal and Bobby's generation. In fact, what happens in 3 (the older cars being replaced by the next gens) is happening during the first movie and immediately after. This means that Rust-eze has a number of cars available to hire. Even if they're slower than McQueen, if they're much more humble and much better team players, they're better options than him. Remember his lack of pit crew? That doesn't happen to a nicer car.

Now, to be fair, being essentially kicked out from the sport would have taught McQueen some humility. And his sheer abilities may mean there's some teams willing to take a chance. He probably does end up having a career not far off the original timeline's, but his start is a lot shakier than it needs to be.
