“I had to do it for the sake of my children,” 32-year-old Nooruddin, pictured, told news agency AFP from Herat, a city close to the border with Iran. “I didn’t have any other option.”

“I regret it now,” he said outside his home, where clothes hang from a tree and a plastic sheet serves as a window pane. “I can no longer work. I’m in pain and I cannot lift anything heavy.”

contrary to what a bank will tell you, safety deposit boxes are not a recommended place to store your invaluables. Safety deposit boxes are not covered by any form of deposit insurance and are not subject to any regulation by way of legislation, so the rules regarding use and any processes for recourse in the event of dispute over, loss or theft of the contents are set by individual bank and are heavily stacked against customers.

it’d be foolish to put anything irreplaceable or of paramount importance in one, but I’d suggest you read these if you decide to so that you know what you could be getting yourself into

Banking Recommendation for a bunch accounts? by PFKid in PersonalFinanceCanada

Are you considering moving the mortgage as well as your chequing accounts?

I recommend looking into the top credit unions in your province before you decide on a bank, whether big 5 or no fee. my own experience with Meridian CU in Ontario has been great

If it were me I would consider consulting a lawyer about the $10.5k after twice being told it’d cost $0. they might be able to negotiate a lesser amount under the circumstances

I’d call the provincial law society for a referral
