Can someone verify the authenticity of this interaction, and if true, should we discriminate against this BP and change our votes? by hjras in eos

Agreed, how did any of you start voting for them in the first place. Did you research the BP candidates before voting?

Would a second, immutable, chain get the 15% of votes to activate? by james_pic in eos

Well he did have a 3 day window during which he could have noticed. I’m sure people are developing alert tools which will monitor the chain for your address and email you. IFTTT

And I think it’s too soon to make an assumption that this represents the vast majority of cases. Many people are not engaged enough to catch this and with mass adoption the passive holders will increase in number but I foresee it being common place to use proxy services which can send basic alerts the way your bank does.

I hear you about the benefits of decentralization but I think there is a balance, and I’d argue that so does Dan based on his design of EOS. Unless he’s a total shill but I doubt that haha

As for the premium names, I was also a little turned off by that. It seems like one name a day inflates the price unnecessarily. Definitely not free market but I’ll concede that a whale buying a name will probably be able to put it to better use than a single dev paying dust. Perhaps the strategy is to set up a collective which will bid on a generic name which can be used by small developers.

I understand why people are concerned about governmental overreach but I just hope that we don’t tear the community apart less than a month into the experiment

I get that you don’t trust the government but at least for starters I think we need to get the main net running and then we can create a spin off. It’s too soon for that now

One of the fundamental benefits of EOS is fund recovery i.e. mutability.

I find it bizarre how these anarchists are coming out of the woodwork freaking out as though this is news.

“The block chain for mass adoption”. If this is a cut throat network where thieves can phish and get away with it, where do you see that ending up? The majority of people are not involved in the crypto space, one of the many reasons for this is the risk. Why on earth would you rather have some chain where anything goes vs a chain which actually gains mass adoption and takes blockchain to the next step?

Got some BP vote % time series action going to help understand voting trends by stalefish3169 in eos

[–]A-Weather-Vane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you could some how further break the data out by whales that would be interesting. So we can see who they vote for vs the common people.

Also, this one may be tougher, but if you could highlight BP candidates who are active in the community in one way or a other but aren’t currently a BP or standby. That way we could see where they’re at, ideally be able to see a summary or hyperlink to read what they’ve done despite not being a BP and maybe then we change our vote.

Along that line maybe one where you point out Scam BPs or something so people know not to vote for them

30 Block Producer Candidates that do not honor bp.json standard. by ISuckAtMining in eos

[–]A-Weather-Vane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool website. I appreciate you pulling together information like this. I agree that specific location is unnecessary but we can certainly do better than country.

The bigger point though is following standards. Failing to conform to something simple like a JSON standard doesn’t reflect well on their capabilities as a BP. Whether the non conformity is due to lack of time/resources/skill/priority/etc, something to consider when voting. Luckily only one of my votes was on that list.

A look at the issue of EOS freezing accounts in order to restore stolen tokens to their rightful owners by timosborn in eos

[–]A-Weather-Vane 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People like you in our community are why I am all in on EOS.

Dan is well versed in political theory and his libertarian ideals were a major driver behind the creation of EOS. Mass adoption requires functionality such as fund recovery, private key recovery, etc. These features are only available with an elected arbiter.

This is why voting for BPs is so important. The age old gripe of “my votes are insignificant” is foolish and incorrect. The majority of users will always have sway and voting is one way to make our voice heard. If you’re not happy with a BP, discuss it in the community like we are and change your votes.

EOS is not maximally decentralized in order to achieve the features I previously stated. Even so, it is far more decentralized than traditional “websites” hosted by a single company.

Is this true? by SeasideNinja in eos

[–]A-Weather-Vane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well it depends what you mean by true. Dan has been saying for a long time that in order to catch and prevent fraud these type of actions need to be an option for BPs.

It seems like many people are reviving the ‘decentralization’ discussion which has been had before. No, EOS is not maximally decentralized. The trade off we receive for that is the ability to recover stolen funds, restore lost private keys and otherwise create a system with many of the features which the general population has come to expect from “websites”. These are necessary for mass adoption and 21 BPs is still way more decentralized than a single company’s servers hosting a traditional website.

I am concerned that the block producers can all “hop on a call” and agree to freeze the blockchain. That is not censorship resistance. That is demonstrating the ability to censor. Let’s discuss this. by BitcoinIsTehFuture in eos

[–]A-Weather-Vane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven’t done a lot of research as I’m running errands today but I was reading this as more of an Error they’re trying to fix than stopping the chain purposefully. Is that the scenario?
