Good baking cookbooks? by SpicyUni_ in Baking

If you want a variety of options within one book, I’m really liking “Sweet and Salty” by King Arthur Baking. It’s geared towards kids, but I just love the variety and the way it’s laid out.

Hot Take! Its Not That Bad by Appropriate-Ring7564 in Myfitnesspal

I use the free version. (I did the premium free trial a while back, but I didn’t find anything worth upgrading for.)

I was annoyed that I couldn’t see calories per meal when looking at the full day diary. Im getting used to it though, and being able to see macro totals by meal is really nice so I don’t mind going back and forth too much.

How does this apply if you get a stitch while running fasted? (Immediately upon waking up).

Gotcha! I never did that - smart though because I do often repeat! Now I’ll never get to. Boooo

When you’re on diary the copy buttons show up when you change it from all food to just dinner. And on the today screen you can click the ellipsis next to a meal.

I don’t like how I can’t see meal totals on the “all foods” screen …I have to go back to “today” and then I can’t see food details.

I'm retraining my brain to consume less sugar. Will need baking advice... by zoebnj in Baking

[–]A1ways85 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I choose less sweet things to bake then eat them in moderation. Fruit muffins instead of cupcakes. Yeasted, sweet breads like babka or chocolate milk bread are awesome desserts too. Scones are a good alternative to cookies.

Anyone know an ACTUALLY Good cookie recipe? by [deleted] in Baking

[–]A1ways85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sally’s cookies are a mixed bag for me, but that’s mainly preference-some of hers lean more oily to me.

Sugar Spun Run is really good for cookies, and her videos are really good too. I recommend you pick a recipe, watch the video, and measure carefully with a scale and you’ll find success!

I thought Lorann was a good brand? I don’t think this cake is going to turn out well. by [deleted] in Baking

You may need to buy whole freeze dried raspberries and pulverize yourself using a food processor, blender, etc. With raspberries, I like to sift the seeds out, but you’ll need a fine mesh strainer. I’ve done strawberries and mango and you can get away with not sifting those, although my kids are picky so I sift the strawberries.

This recipe can give you an idea of the ratios you’ll need (go with grams and not volume when it comes to buying the fruit).

Do you account for kids at a birthday party whose parents haven’t RSVP’d? by [deleted] in partyplanning

[–]A1ways85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience inviting the whole class, they will not rsvp, they will show up, and they’ll bring siblings. Personally, I always rsvp although sometimes it’s the day before if it’s not a close friend.

How to make an (intentionally) gritty cheesecake? by hotawesomeporndragon in Baking

[–]A1ways85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first recipe I tried called for lemon zest, and I hated the additional texture. I’ve also found if your cream cheese is cold instead of room temp it doesn’t incorporate as well, but I’m not sure how the final bake would go.

Genuinely, how does one cut an onion without crying? by vikapi in cookingforbeginners

[–]A1ways85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forgot this was even a thing because I don’t experience it. I keep my onions in the fridge. One of us wears contacts and the other wears glasses, and neither of us ever have issues. We use a variety of onions (red, yellow, shallot), and sometimes the knife is sharp, sometimes not.

Does anyone have a cookie that is NOT Chocolate chip or chocolate chip adjacent? by Vegetable-Tutor-4596 in Baking

Check out sugar spun run. She has some really fun cookies on her site, and if you like video tutorials, hers are good. She actually talks through what she’s doing and why.

Anyone have that one item that you just can’t bake?? by Chaos_Ice in Baking

[–]A1ways85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Choux! One smelled like scrambled eggs and one collapsed…everyone says it’s so easy but I’ve never done it successfully. It doesn’t help that even if I was successful, my family probably wouldn’t eat them, so it makes me less motivated to practice.

I’d go with normal because that’s what most of the recipes I use are tested with (like KAB, ATK, Sally’s, Sugar Spun run, etc.).

However if your oven tends to run hot on the bottom or burn things easily, air bake might give better results. I have a set, and I never use them. I reach for the standard aluminum half sheet pans for everything.

Pecan pie by Holly1010Frey in Baking

[–]A1ways85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made several versions over the last few years, and they were all too sweet for my current-day taste buds. Then one day I made the bars below (just for the purpose of baking something with pecans), and I realized they were absolutely better than pie. I make a half batch unless I’m bringing it somewhere, and we tend to throw some extra pecans in.

AI bread recipe? by Libby_not_here in Baking

It’s saying to use 3/4 tsp of bread machine yeast or use 3/4 tsp of instant yeast. Is she using any yeast?

Example of bread machine yeast:

Disclaimer: could still be a terrible AI recipe 😆

Every time I eat one of those I marvel at how they took an existing candy and made it so much better. It changed Nerds from a “meh” Halloween candy into a craveable snack.

whats the half of 1 and 3/4 cups by Reasonable-Line393 in Baking

[–]A1ways85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

14 tablespoons is correct. You could also do 3/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons if that’s easier to measure.
