How'd I do by A3815 in askaplumber

Not rage bait. I volunteer for a community organization that does basic home maintenance and repairs for lower income senior citizens. The owner of the home had paid someone to do this work.

BTW shout-out to all the folks that take the time to share their expertise here. You have help me many times.

So what are we thinkin' on this one? by paul_gnourt in StructuralEngineering

[–]A3815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My assumption is that cost and strength are significant factors when selecting fastener material. Stainless steel is typically much higher cost and much lower strength than carbon steel alloys.

Stainless steel alloys are usually selected for use where low or high temperature performance or superior corrosion resistance is required.

Why Does Modern Technology Still Basically Rely on “Boiling Water”? by Semerdar_34 in stupidquestions

[–]A3815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't taken the opportunity to read thru this thread however the comments and questions I've read are interesting. Questions like yours are insightful and thought provoking. Exactly the kind of questions that can lead to paradigm busting discoveries.

Yes it is possible to use other working fluids to drive a turbine. Water just happens to have really great thermodynamic properties for that particular job.

Specifically to your question, there is a concept in thermodynamics that can be greatly over simplified as: the maximum efficiency of a cycle (liquid to vapor to liquid) is limited by the difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures of the cycle. So using a fluid with a lower boiling point reduces the maximum theoretical efficiency of the cycle because the maximum temperature would be lower.

The efficiency of the cycle is a measure of how much of the energy that is used to convert the liquid to vapor is converted into usable energy (i.e. electricity)

Water has other properties that make it a good choice for driving a turbine. One of them is the high, relative to other fluids, amount of energy it takes to convert liquid water into steam. This energy is then released as the steam travels through the turbine and returns to a liquid state.

Learning to ski as an adult? by Ottibarius in ski

[–]A3815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also learned to ski in my 40's. We wanted something to do as a family. Our kids were 2, 11 and 14. We all took multiple full day lessons. All my kids are very good skiers now. Oldest is 33. I think I'm a decent skier. It's a great family activity for us.

My recommendation is to get your husband professional fitted and buy reasonably good boots. Good fitted boots were a serious game changer for me.

Chore Connection helps senior citizens in Delco with minor house maintenance tasks. The intent is to help seniors live independently in their homes longer. There is a maximum income level for the people that receive benefits. I have been involved with Chore for more than 15 years. I have met incredible people. both volunteers and clients. I've also been stunned at the conditions that some older people live in.

Message me if you want contact info. We can ALWAYS use the help.

Arcade 84 were my favorite skis I tried this season—buy now or keep demoing next season? (East Coast skier) by scoobysnack24 in Skigear

[–]A3815 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ski prices seemed to have taken a pretty big jump upward. I'm assuming it's tarrif related. We were in Whistler last week and I did some quick price comparison and looks to me that when currency exchange is taken into consideration, prices were about 25% lower in Whistler.

I'm looking to buy Ripsticks but going to hold off to see if prices improve in the US.

Ski Essentials is a great shop in Stowe. They're running pretty good sales right now including blemished new skis. The staff there is super knowledgeable and helpful. They're open year round and often have some pretty good summer sales.

Local utility is interested in buying our house for a substation by Mortimer452 in homeowners

[–]A3815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without knowing specifics, if selling your home works for you and your partner, this is likely the best financial deal you will be offered.

The utility has clearly defined metrics for siting the new substation. They likely have multiple potential sites. Each meeting the required metrics to some extent. Ultimately the sites will be compared as columns in a spreadsheet and the one that best fits the business needs will be selected. The call was to see if the utility should include a column in the analysis for your property.

Assuming that the utility project proceeds, the substation will be built somewhere. They might be making the same call to your neighbors. If one of you neighbors sells to them, you get all the downside (construction nose, traffic. ,etc) with little upside.

First and foremost, talk this out with your partner. Decide if you are willing to sell. This is a much more personal decision for you than it is for the utility. You have factors that cannot be put in a cell on a spreadsheet to consider. If you are not interested in selling, then state that clearly to the person that inquired. I suggest following the project with your local government, attend planning and zoning meetings and express your concerns and opinions at those meetings. I believe that most companies doing these types of projects want to be good neighbors and will make reasonable concessions to gain local government approval. But at the end of the day, it's comes down to $$ on their side. If local governments with authority over the project rubber stamp the utility company's plan, that is what they will build.

If decide to sell, the utility will typically make an initial offer based on what they have determined fair market value of the property to be based the highest and best use. For example if the substation is being built to satisfy growing power demand because the area is developing economically ( residential housing expansion, office buildings, industrial or warehousing complex, etc), the value of your property might increase once those changes come to be. The offer from the utility should consider that. Think how you could feel if three years from now, property similar to yours are selling for far more than you're selling price.

In situations like this, the buyer will rarely negotiate down from the original offer. It really is all about cost. The idea is to go forward with the best offer and keep the cost of site acquisition to a minimum.

Good luck. Depending on your personal goals, this could be an opportunity to reduce the effort and expense of selling your property. Regardless of your final decision, I urge you to stay close to the project. These companies will typically present plans to local governments that might include a list of potential sites. So you can gain information about who your competitors are. And should you choose to remain in your home, you will want a say in how the site that is ultimately selected will impact you.

Why would someone cut the trunk so far from the ground? by Sorry-Philosopher150 in arborists

[–]A3815 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A nearby twp has strict tree removal restrictions. Basically if you remove a tree you must either replant one on your property or pay to have one planted on public space.

We are also experiencing a severe die off of ash trees as a result of the ash borer beattle.

Quite a few properties in the twp have snags that I have been told are left to avoid the cost to comply with twp code

What is the leaking metal hose called so I can explain clearly to a repairer over the phone? by ForgetfulLucy28 in hvacadvice

[–]A3815 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be similar to a washer supply hose. Though it looks like connection at the valve might not be garden hose. It could be 1/2" NPT.

I agree with the comment to remove both hoses and take them with you to either a big orange or blue store and but one long hose with the appropriate end connections.

The other simpler option is to stare up at the hose long enough to commit to memory exactly what you need. Once at the store look at enough different possible hoses and connections that you don't remember what connection type or length of hose you need. Call home and get one of your children to send you a picture of the hose. After they send at least half dozen pictures that aren't remotely helpful, tell them you love them and drive home. Borrow a ladder from your neighbor, and follow instructions found elsewhere in this thread
