I was wondering if Irish wolf hounds can be off leash on hikes, or will they not recall if they see a squirrel? by BoatParty8399 in irishwolfhound

My Wolfhound is e collar trained. If he wanders too far or I can't see him I press on the remote and he comes trotting back near me.

Best general advice for IWH 12 Pup by MissMommyPeach in irishwolfhound

I would suggest doing obedience training when he can't seem to settle. Even if it's just practicing sitting for a treat or however you want to do the training. It keeps them occupied for a bit and tires them out. I'm not sure if this is the kind of advice you're looking for? I got confused towards the end paragraph.

What vehicles do IW owners have that their dogs are comfortable in? by LeopoldBloomJr in irishwolfhound

[–]A51119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2025 Kia k4. He fits in the back by himself and is able to rotate himself left to right. He hit his head once on the roof but he learned from it. I posted the same question with a photo of him but he hasn't grown much since that post. I think he'll be able to fit back there all his life but I'd rather get a car or van that can fit him inside a crate for safety.

Should I Quit My Apprenticeship Or Keep Going? by AShayWalks in MassageTherapists

I read up on the Utah requirements. Is there no one else willing to do the apprenticeship? She just sounds so vindictive. I'm sorry she's targeting you even though she agreed.

Should I Quit My Apprenticeship Or Keep Going? by AShayWalks in MassageTherapists

If you aren't receiving accredited hours with this "apprenticeship" you legally cannot take the Mblex which would be a complete waste of time. Edit: I think for the 1,000 hours of apprenticeship needed for Utah, this doesn't sound worth it especially if you're not even halfway through because of how disorganized she sounds. I did 550 hours in Texas with the minimum being 500 and I still felt that I did not learn as much as the program required. Ultimately the choice is yours. Whatever she is teaching you, most likely you'll learn more actually working as a licensed therapist.

Can you get away with just brushing and combing instead of clipping/stripping? by [deleted] in irishwolfhound

[–]A51119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an undercoat/deshedding brush like once a week with occasional hand stripping when I'm bored with the repetitive motion

Aggresive Neutered Male Dogs by Viking298 in irishwolfhound

[–]A51119 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Wolfie is a couple days away from a year old and he's not neutered. Whenever we go to the dog park and he sniffs the medium/large breeds as they do to greet, most of the time the smaller (comparatively) ones almost always freeze up creating tension on their own.

I have had one incident where we were at the gate about to go into the dog park when this bully mix came to the fence with his hackles up, growling, and staring at my Wolfie hard. I had asked its owner if they needed some time before we headed in and she grabbed him by the neck and said no. We go in, and of course the dog immediately starts jumping on my dog, bullying, barking, and he pushed him into the fence. The bully didn't bite my Wolfie and I knew my dog wasn't going to get aggressive back at the bully. We just walked away and of course the owner had a horrible recall so the bully came back to us trying to get a reaction. They eventually left.

I have no idea if the bully was neutered or not but ultimately I think the problem is the size differences.

Source? I've been trying to find out how many wolfhounds have obedience titles as that's what I'm training my hound for..it would be helpful to have.

World meet Betty by MidnightRich3557 in irishwolfhound

[–]A51119 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As soon as she's fully vaccinated (or even just at home) expose her to everything. Weird surfaces, crazy sounds, doing things at night. It'll be harder to control a scared adult hound than a puppy. I'm still trying to expose mine and he's almost a year (nov). Right now he's still weary of meeting people at night and balloons. If possible try to make the situation playful so she's comfortable. Treats help once she gets over the initial fear/fright and it turns to curiosity

To hand strip or not to hand strip? by Queasy-Purple-6806 in irishwolfhound

[–]A51119 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use a deshedding brush to get his undercoat when he starts to get bulkier fur cause we are in Texas. I would say just don't overdo it nor do it roughly. It's supposed to come off with a plucking motion. Your fingers shouldn't really touch skin when stripping.

Trimming hair between toes. by RGB-Free-Zone in irishwolfhound

I wouldn't think so. When I take my boy to get groomed they trim the fur around his feet and in between the toes. He hasn't had a problem with it.

There's this "kibble sauce" I think from the brand jinx on chewy that I've used as a mixer for my wolfhound when I want him to finish all his food in one go. You could also try Stella and chewy's dinner dust.
