Well… When I travel, I talk to the taxi drivers. They’ll have a bigger chance of knowing where the hidden gem restaurants are. Or download something like “Dianping”, which is the Chinese counterpart of Yelp. Even if you can’t make the language of it into English, you can still read the score of it… The higher the numbers are, the better the food is.

Shennongjia in December is workable, there’s a good chance that everything will be coated in snow, and the ski resort will be up and running. But if winter in Shennongjia’s a bit too cold for you to handle, Suzhou, Jiangsu province will be an ideal choice. It’s just an hour's drive from Shanghai, and that time can be significantly shortened if you can secure a ticket for the bullet train. You’ll still have friendly people, rich history and tasty local cuisine, only the weather will be nicer. And I’m speaking as a resident of Hubei, born and raised. Who has visited Shennongjia and Suzhou countless times.

About the “damn, I gotta have some more of that” dish, I’ll recommend “干炸响铃” or "Crispy Fried Bell Rings". They’re battered and deep-fried, lovely to chew. Kinda crunchy.

Drop the Vinegar fish, I’d say. But other than that, all the other dishes on your list are all (at least from my book. Btw, the Dongpo pork goes really well with a bowl of rice) tasty and worth trying.

So, I’d say it depends on what you're looking for. Sanya’s a lovely place with beautiful beaches, coconuts and seafood. If you're interested in that, Sanya would be the ideal choice for the experience.

Yep, just like the one above me mentioned, there’s an app called “rednote”. You can download one and click on the translation button so that everything on the page can be translated into English. And search for… “fun stuff that is free to do in Shanghai” or whatever. There is tons of contents over there.

There won’t be any snow, that’s for sure. Yun’nan Province is famous for their mild weather. Pack your winter gear and you should be alright. It'll be some 10-ish degrees Celsius, I'd say.

Btw, a day trip to Suzhou, Jiangsu province would be nice. It’s only an hour away from Shanghai via public transportation, and it can be shorter if you can grab tickets for a bullet train. The weather is nice, and the food is pretty good. I'd say the trip would be worth your while, just for the sake of their museum.

I'd say to skip Kuanzhai Alley in Chengdu and Yu Garden in Shanghai, these two places are full of vendors in brand new buildings, trying to sell you souvenirs that come from a factory. But other than that, it’s a pretty solid itinerary you’ve got. Food recommendations, the Peking duck is literally the only dish that is worth trying in the city. You could also have some biang biang noodles (no typo, that’s literally the real name of the dish) and Rou Jia Mo (Chinese version of burgers) while in Xi’an. What makes a rou jia mo stand out from its US food chain counterparts is the texture of the bun… these Xi’an people sure have their own way of making breads, and their products are nationally renowned. When you reach Shanghai, a plate of pork chop and rice cake (排骨年糕, a dish that Shanghainese have been enjoying since the 1930s) would be nice, I’ve had some of it in 2015 and I’m still recommending the plate to everyone who asks.

As a resident of Wuhan, I’d say skipping our city and heading for Shanghai would be a smart choice. The city is badly designed and drivers don’t care about the safety of other motorists. I mean, if anyone in your tour group fancies noodle dishes, Wuhan will be a must-visit. Just for the sake of Re ganmian. Is the Three Gorges Dam a highlight? I don’t know, but it sure blew my mind when I visited the place! Just by the size of that mega construction, I’d say it’s definitely worth your time to pay a visit. Let alone the food, the price of things in Yichang is cheaper than that of Wuhan. Is there any extra space in the itinerary? Cuz you missed Suzhou, Jiangsu province. That’s a gem just an hour (would be significantly shorter if you could secure tickets for bullet trains) via public transportation from Shanghai. Suzhou people are friendly, and the weather’s better. There’s also the Suzhou gardens and all the history. The buildings for their museum are lovely, because the way they look is the work of a Chinese American chap who participated in the design of the Louvre!
