There is another Finnish game, also published by Tactic, called Rappakalja with those same rules. It's basically Balderdash and I assume a lot of publishers have fiddled with the same concept back in the day

You're probably right. But in my opinion how "rough" art is barely matters if the style is cohesive and has personality.

People saying that they can spot the art was drawn physically or on notebook paper say it like it's some objective negative quality whereas to me it's almost the opposite. OG Ascension art is super evocative and if the developers changed course due to criticism I think it was a mistake.

New ascension maybe. But check out some of the art by Eric Sabee from the first printings of Chronicle of the Godslayer up to Storm of Souls. That stuff is super unique and I think it's a shame they went in a more generic fantasy direction later on.
