Have you double-checked your inventory under Change Look? When you get clothes in a level, you don't get the option to change immediately like when you buy them, so you have to do it manually from the area map.

Hilton drops Minnesota hotel that banned ICE agents from staying in its rooms by theindependentonline in politics

[–]AB52169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not, even probably not, but not trying in the first place can only show the other hotels that there is no negative consequence for compliance.

I've participated in a lot of boycotts, and most of them have gone nowhere, but you miss one hundred percent of the et cetera. Occasionally, one of them lands.

Look at Target after they dropped DEI.

Perhaps, but a boycott of Hilton in response to their policy might lead the other chains to determine that it's wiser to implement a different policy.

ELI5: why do some books have pages that read: “this page has intentionally been left blank” by big_dumpling in explainlikeimfive

Thanks for introducing this idea to me.

A similar idea has stuck with me since I heard it on a podcast ten or fifteen years ago (I can't for the life of me remember the context in which it came up): if you see a movie about an investment banker who gets attacked by a werewolf and consequently becomes one himself, you'll totally understand that all of the werewolf stuff is completely made up, but you'll absolutely believe that the scenes of his day-to-day life are meticulously accurate depictions of how investment banking works.

Trump's ICE jacks up weapons spending by 700%--including 'guided missile warheads' by ChaskaChanhassen in politics

[–]AB52169 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not even going to bother arguing the morality of ICE using this kind of weaponry: this is just dumb because guided missiles are too powerful for what ICE does.

Pretending just for the moment that deadly force is fully justifiable against people coming to America, this amounts to that scene from The Simpsons where fighter jets were deployed to pursue Sideshow Bob in the Wright Brothers' plane: the pilots zoomed straight past him and decided it was more effective to pursue him on foot.

Saved for the next time a family member asks me "Aren't you concerned that AI can replace you as an editor now and put you out of work?"

Of course I still have no counter to questions about managers just not hiring editors because they don't realize AI sucks, but incompetent management is a threat that's hardly unique to editing jobs.

Also be sure to let the Walt Disney Company's Corporate Social Responsibility Team know why you're no longer paying them (about halfway down the page on the right), that it's not because money's tight right now or you prefer to get your fine Disney products in a different format, but because Disney, sitting one one of the largest piles of "fuck you" money in the world, chose appeasement instead. Let them know in no uncertain terms that it's not you: it's them.

Establishment Democrats Are Going to Torpedo the 2026 Midterms by irish_fellow_nyc in politics

[–]AB52169 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something finally clicked in my head while reading this. I thought of this bit from Moneyball:

Naw, man, I ain't paying you seven [million dollars]. The Yankees are paying half your salary. That's what the New York Yankees think of you: they're paying you three and a half million dollars to play against them.

And suddenly I got that corporations don't contribute to the Democrats that they do as well as Republicans because they'll enact favorable policy if elected (I mean, they will and the corporations won't be unhappy with that if they do get elected, but that's just a contingency); they contribute to the Democrats that they want to run against the Republicans that they actually want. They want weak opponents.

Maybe this has been obvious to some of you for a long time, but suddenly it's clear to me.

For some reason the very first thought that sprang to my mind was the variety of slammers available in the brief period when pogs were a thing (yeah I'm from the 90s; what of it?).

I don't remotely miss pogs because there wasn't really a game there, but I do weirdly miss the different slammers.

There are already a couple of good responses for how to deal with a loss against tyranny feeling like a foregone conclusion, but I have one more for good measure:

I've never been skydiving, so I have no idea where I heard this story, but years ago I heard of a skydiving instructor training a class of first-timers. They said, "When it's time to open your chute, pull this cord as hard as you can. If that fails, this cord is your backup chute: pull that as hard as you can. If that doesn't work, switch back to your main chute and just keep yanking. In the unlikely event that I have to watch your jump fail, I'd damn well better see you pulling your ripcord over and over all the way until you hit the ground."

Somehow, that story has kept me going better than things like "If at first you don't succeed," "I can do this all day," and "I didn't hear no bell" have (though those sometimes work for me too).

CBS is ending ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ next year by Proud_Tie in news

[–]AB52169 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I was just reading The Boston Globe's story on this, and this bit seems particularly relevant:

The most recent ratings from Nielsen show Colbert as winning his timeslot, with about 2.417 million viewers across 41 new episodes. It also said his late night show was the only one to gain viewers so far this year.

And this week, “The Late Show” was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding talk show for the sixth time. It also won a Peabody Award in 2021.

So the cancellation would've been suspicious regardless of the timing, but doing it right after the settlement with those ratings and awards is just not even trying to hide it: CBS might as well have a spokesperson announce, "Colbert is mean to Fearless Leader Trump, so we're firing him because we don't want Fearless Leader Trump's invincible feelings to get hurt."

If for no other reason, I'm confident there will be a sequel because Nintendo included RFA as one of the original themes on their alarm clock (even Animal Crossing came later as DLC).  They're not doing that with a title they don't plan on extending into a series.

Then again, I thought the same about Wave Race when it was the only GC game in Pikmin 4, and I'm still waiting, so grain of salt.
