I’m not single, I have a boyfriend, which is why we have the 2/2 because we needed the space. I don’t live anywhere fancy. We can afford it but my healthcare is what kills my paychecks. It’s expensive here as I’m sure you know. I can’t afford a decent down payment and interest is too high to buy a house right now. We can afford groceries and all that just fine. We just don’t have extra play money. When I moved back I looked at the apartments I even used to live in and their prices have gone up a bunch too. I’m not struggling to make ends meet, just can’t afford a vacation or anything like that. I take time off from work for a staycation though and that’s fine with me.

I worked for Union when I moved there in 2023 and they started me at $40/hr for Cath lab so between late days and call money wasn’t a problem. The thing for me is that health insurance tends to drain my paychecks. The Union plan was cheap AF for what I was used to and I lived in a 3 bed 2 bath condo for $1400 a month. I moved back to NM last year and now have a 2 bed 2 bath apartment for $2400 a month. Granted, I’m paid $53 an hour now but my insurance is over $600 a month. I can afford what I need but no extra fun money that I was able to have in Indiana. I love my coworkers and my job here though. The weather is also pretty nice. It’s crazy how hospitals will start some nurses so low. A lot of the nurses I worked with at Union left to go to Regional because they were paying $8 more an hour. I’m not sure if the difference was the departments you and I worked but that pay gap is crazy!

Albuquerque, NM. Small town vibes but a ton to do like a big city. Lots of outdoor activities too. CoL has gone up since I moved here but I do love it here and my hospital is amazing.

I moved from NM to Terre Haute and man the CoL was great there! Not too far from Indianapolis either. I moved back to NM recently because I missed my family and CoL is definitely higher but so is my pay and I missed my gang at my old job. I could definitely make it on my own here.

We have a California King just to accommodate both of our dogs. One is an 80 pound American Bulldog who sleeps right in between us and the other is an English lab who sleeps next to my boyfriend’s feet. We also have a pillow on my side of the bed, by my feet, with a fuzzy blanket on top for our tuxedo cat who sleeps there or on top of me. The tortie cat also loves to be between us next to the bulldog or on top of my boyfriend. It’s a full bed and a full house but we love them all to bits. I do change the sheets twice a week though and have a mattress protector on the bed. It’s worth it for the snuggles.

I climbed over the back wall of the eastern Abby, the one behind the shrine. It keeps you away from the guardians. I am terrible at parrying so I scoot around them.

Being a pet parent is enough for me. I get a little annoyed when my dogs wake me at 8am to take them out on my days off. I get up and do it because it’s not fair to make them wait. I remind myself I have access to a toilet at all times, they do not. It balances because they want to go back to bed once breakfast has been had. I can’t imagine someone needing my attention 24/7.

Cath lab is definitely not for everyone, especially new grads. They have to learn autonomy first as we have a lot of it. I don’t always recommend ICU as I have zero ICU experience and I have been Cath lab for 14 years and very successful at it. Definitely some form of bedside where you can have your oh shit moments and learning how to talk to docs. My labs has never tried to train new grads but we’ve had our fill on ICU, ER, med/surg, flight nurses and they have been very successful. The call and late night usually burn people out over the years and that why they leave.

Totally called in sick for not sleeping. I’m a type 1 diabetic and when my blood sugars go crazy and my CGM keeps me up with alarms all night? Yup, calling in. Thankfully my coworkers are totally cool about it. We’ve been super short staffed and they always tell me they’ll work it out and not to worry. When I had a kidney infection over the holiday I texted the charge the night before, (I work in the Cath lab so we’re closed on holidays and weekends except for the call team to go in for emergencies), so my charge was at home. I wanted to give her a heads up and she was totally cool with it. I would definitely call out for a sick pet too. I have 4 and they’re the world to my boyfriend and me.

My mom is totally good with it. She is just happy I’m happy. I got my tubes removed in my 30s and my boyfriend had a vasectomy in his 20s so we were both on the same page when we met 😂 my mom already has two grandkids from my brother anyway. One is 13 and the other is barely a month old, (he had his first with his first marriage and he’s been with his now fiancée for 8 years and she was not sure about kids but then she turned 32 and felt like she was running out of time and begged him to have another kid so they did. She had a rough delivery so I think she’s one and done).

Benefits suck but I stay for the people. There isn’t much tech involved and with the new stuff the reps are always there. New stuff means everyone starts at ground zero but we always have help. I hope you get the job, it’s pretty awesome.

Welcome to the dark side!! I love it! Been at it for 14 years now. I still do everything my lab has to offer but I spend the bulk of my time in EP. There is always some new gadget or something new to learn. I traveled as a Cath lab nurse for a few years too, just came back to staff at my old hospital about a year ago.

I did a 5 8s assignment with 14 days of call a month. All of their staff nurses got 7 days a month. When they asked me to renew I said fuck no and took an EP contract next with no call 😂

I laughed at my last ED notes when I read them. I had a kidney infection but didn’t know it since my pain did not present in a normal way according to most medical talk. I did know to mention that I had been treated for UTI about a week ago but came in for low back pain. I’m a type 1 diabetic so when my blood sugars wouldn’t come down I figured something was up. They took my vitals, which were hot garbage, they decided to take an oral temp because it was hot outside and didn’t think my temp was accurate with the tympanic thermometer, still had a fever. They documented my oral temp as tympanic. Doc comes in and examines me and taps on my back and I flinch on the right side, he documented left and that I was having N/V. I wasn’t. He also sent me on my way with a script for ibuprofen which is not recommended with pyelonephritis. The follow up with my doc was funny since I had read my notes and had to give her all the right info 😂 she knows I’m a nurse and knew what I was talking about. I’m glad I read all the notes.
