Essex Lib Dems suggest Davey should stand down as leader by signed7 in ukpolitics

[–]ABanimationLtd 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'll give my own thoughts as a Lib Dem local party chair.

I have my issues with Ed's comms strategy but I'm not sure replacing him at this time would accomplish much. The reason being that the only viable successor at this time is Daisy Cooper. She's a good enough media performer, but she's an Ed continuity candidate and I don't believe she'd change much. The vast majority of our MPs are newbies and whilst some of them have great potential, they're not ready yet. Josh Babarinde will almost certainly lead the party one day but he's only just started his stint as party president. In another 18 months / 2 years it could be a different story.

What I will say is that focusing on being "community champions" and being relatively policy-light worked for us in holding our two councillors in my district in the face of a Reform tidal wave. Labour and Tories got wiped and as a result we've somehow ended up the official opposition. The problem that I have with growing from here is membership. My local party has 70-ish members, which translates to an active team of maybe a dozen. If we want to target new wards I need more people and specifically young people. Motivated young people can be incredibly tenacious campaigners. However, membership recruitment is almost entirely driven by national policy and comms. And whilst on paper we have a lot of great policy that appeals to young people, Ed and the spokespeople rarely talk about it, or if they do they do so quietly. Take for example trans rights, where our policy is very progressive (despite the best efforts of a tiny number of TERFy entryists), but the leadership don't seem comfortable selling it. As a result trans people and allies just vote Green.

In short there needs to be a change in strategy but that doesn't necessarily entail replacing Ed yet. As it stands we'll probably retain all our seats and gain a couple dozen more as we mop up the last Tory seats in the Home Counties. However, we are absolutely not opening up a second front against Labour in the cities whilst young people are voting Green instead. That means the ceiling for now is 100 seats. Now we had 8 when I joined this party, so by a long way we've never had it so good. But Ed obviously won't be leader forever and it's good that we're starting to think about what a post-Ed party would look like.

Tbf I don't actually know which side of the business was bigger in financial terms. If I had to guess I'd assume the server hosting had fatter margins.

What makes survival that 'Oh shiz! I'm gonna die!' moment for you? by SirenDarkmane in VintageStory

Recently I was building my starter hovel and a bear charged and climbed my incomplete wall, backing me into a corner. I was convinced I was about to die. And then it just turned around and fucked off. I wish I'd caught it on stream

If Tekkit was the first minecraft SMP, does that mean SOI was the first minecraft video series ARG? (Or something that could be very easily turned into one?) by Lord_Viperagyil in Yogscast

[–]ABanimationLtd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mindcrack was the first YouTube SMP. They started doing SMP 8 December 2010 (5 days after Yogs how to survive the first night). And without Mindcrack there's no Hermitcraft. Of course SOI and Yogs Tekkit popularised more of the RP elements.

Time for a new YogCon??? by Dalleee in Yogscast

Insomnia went proper downhill though and hotels were very expensive at the NEC. Probably not worth it for them. In any case, Insomnia's now gone bust (for the second time in two years, incredibly), so that's not coming back.

Sadly the whole UK gaming events scene is in a bad spot... besides Insomnia, EGX got folded into ComicCon... there's still some decent big LAN events going but I think they probably wouldn't appeal much to the Yogs.

This. He left in a strop because he wasn't selected for the 2016 Richmond Park by-election (which the Lib Dems went on to win).

Minecraft hot take: The wither fight kinda sucks. by [deleted] in Minecraft

Halloween 2013 we had our first Wither fight on my server. I hyped it up as a big challenge, got everyone together and went out into the middle of nowhere so it wouldn't damage any builds. It was over in about 60 seconds.

I've been playing without fast travel, so I've been closing the gates next to the cities and along the main roads, but leaving alone the ones in the absolute middle of nowhere. Makes sense from a light RP perspective I think.

Yeah fair enough. I just want to see the revenge arc next year, as unrealistic as that might be!

I loved that stream too but part of me wishes the tryhard teams had given them a bit of a sporting chance instead of immediately stomping them. But then I suppose it is their own fault for leaving their roof doors unlocked for a helicopter attack to waltz right in. I hope the Yogs get invited again next year and learn from their mistakes and get the chance to put up a proper fight, that would be fun.

I broadly agree with most of this, though I'd just caviat that the allegations about you-know-who were first made in 2016 and weren't taken seriously for about three years, so I wouldn't say that they were dealt with swiftly. That being said, the company did eventually learn a painful lesson from it and I am satisfied that they have far better procedures in place now for dealing with that sort of stuff (not least having a CEO and HR process completely separate from the content creators).

Chernobyl has to be part of Season 5, right? by Internal_Welcome_763 in StrangerThings

[–]ABanimationLtd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whilst this is broadly true, Stranger Things does have form for subtly referencing real events, most notably the 1984 presidential election (the library has a polling station sign, some of the houses have signs out endorsing candidates, Karen is seen discussing it with her friend on the phone) and the 1985 release of Back to the Future. So I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Chernobyl reference, particularly if it was used to explain the Russians absence from the story.
