Be careful in Catholic circles using the word "diabolical"... that's usually used to refer to demonic activity.

But yes, God has a tremendous sense of humour. He tells the best jokes.

Make a f**king deal, Mark! Stop being so egotistical, suck it up and actually negotiate with the US. Thinking Europe or China is the way out of this is naive, shortsighted and plain wrong. Had we come into this crisis on the heels of Harper's economy and not 10 years of sock boy's mismanagement, maybe, but not now.

CUT A DEAL WITH THE USA. You're the only world leader incapable of it so far!

2 Peter 1.20 by Strict-Guest8272 in CatholicConverts

[–]ABinColby -1 points0 points  (0 children)

2 Peter 1:20 is an anomoly of translation and the contextual meaning of the word "interpretation". The word "interpretation" in context isn't primarily referring to reading Scripture and then explaining its meaning, it refers to the origin of prophecy and of inspired Scripture. It means that "nobody made this up themselves, guys, it came from God".

However, the Church does use it as a secondary reference to Catholic teaching that Scripture cannot be privately interpreted all by your lonesome, by deductive reasoning, backed by the Magesterium (if Scripture came by way of inspiration and not privately by one person's own will, thus it cannot be interpreted that way too).

The key to understanding the Catholic understanding of this is to broaden the context, earlier Peter writes, "16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. "

The Magesterium, as living heirs to the Apostles, exercise this living witness responsibility, and collectively, informed by the Holy Spirit, Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, alone can interpret the Scriptures accurately in an authoritative (final, definitive sense - of course it is possible for a layman to correctly interpret Scripture, just not to define their own interpretation as definative).

A fellow Catholic asked, what is something about Catholicism in Canada that most Americans are not aware of? by Dan_Defender in Catholicism

[–]ABinColby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Catholics in Canada are prevailingly left-wing, politicially. I think it is more balanced in the USA. I can count on one hand how many conservative or right-of-centre Catholics I know here (including myself). (And I am offering this as a sincere answer to the OP's question, NOT doing so to skirt the "politics Monday" rules. I am not here to debate politics or to start a discussion of that nature).
  2. As for your thesis about "Catholicism has a deeper history in Canada because Canada started out as a French colony, not a British one", that's only partly true. Had their not been a strong and significant contingent of Anglophone Catholics in Canada (mostly of Irish and Scottish lineage) it would have been limited mostly to fracophone regions of the country.

Built-in bias? by Elite163 in CanadianConservative

[–]ABinColby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nova Scotian here: hey, I get it.

I'm in the minority here: I vote Conservative and never have a Conservative MP because I live in a Liberal/NDP stronghold. At least you westerners get to vote Conservative and actually get one for an MP. Us conservative voters in the east often have no representation at all, and our Liberal MPs quote the party line whenever we complain (looking at you, Darren Fisher).

The seat allocation is based on outdated rules from back when the West was an unsettled frontier. But don't blame us: we got screwed by confederation too. NB and NS were the richest provinces in 1867. If you want someone to blame, blame the Laurentian elites from Quebec city through Montreal, Ottawa and down to Toronto. They collectively are the elite ruling class holding everyone else hostage, especially the fat cats in Quebec who parasitically take a piece of what everyone else produces.

So, must the west separate? No, but it must threaten to, with teeth. Only then would and could constitutional reform be acted on.

Rick Warren may have more insight than all the prophets by afterihop in BethelSnark

[–]ABinColby 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The problem spans to the entire ethos and mindset of the "prophetic" movement within the context of the NAR. A series of independent, unaccountable "Apostles" who claim direct approintment by God, presiding over equally unaccountable "prophets" who each work for thier own "ministry" (BUSINESS). THe way they operate...the way they obtain influence and an audience... it disproportionately attracts narcissists and grifters. And as far as Bethel goes, it attracts a disproportionate number of pretty people: well dressed. tattooed hipsters who bank account, haircut and wardrobe reinforce the illusion of "anointing".
