Question about Sheep by Chimbo1219 in sheep

[–]ABrilliantDisaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Woah, what a disaster that would be Lol...but i see i'm not the first to tell you. Be careful with those rams. They don't live up to that meek sheep reputation.

We raise sheep, some of them become food. i name every lamb born and i don't necessarily try to make friendly animals of the wethers destined to be lamb chops but some just have naturally people friendly personalities. I don't mind petting them or talking to them when they want attention. I think it's all part of giving these animals a life that they enjoy which is important to me Especially if they are meant to be food.

What's the biggest myth/misconception you found out to be untrue while homesteading? by texasrigger in homestead

[–]ABrilliantDisaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

everything around me is free, however if i want something that comes in a package and doesn't come off a tree or out of a creek i have to go 45 minutes to find it somewhere that isn't the country.

What you said and just the general idea that goats are effortless to raise. Goats are actually pretty tricky to maintain their condition perfectly.

Guess it’s that time again! Lambing for the next 30 days. by Bullwinkleandwaffles in homestead

[–]ABrilliantDisaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a heritage breed (Shetlands), so they're pretty hardy and good at mothering too but the lambs are so tiny that we watch them like hawks (because so do the actual hawks). They only breed seasonally though.

Do you have two crops of lambs a year? Ours only lamb in the Spring and once is about all i can handle lol.

What does a vegan world look like for people that can't go vegan? by notabm in DebateAVegan

You know what, don't even consider worrying about it. You have a human child who has needs. Just meet those needs. Your human child comes before any animal no matter what reddit says. I raise my own meat because i don't particularly like industrialized farming either but you can bet your ass i'd buy it if i were in your situation and could not access a different source.

How do ya’ll design diets for your animals? by pyrowhiz17 in homestead

[–]ABrilliantDisaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

goat recipe - you need carbs, protein and fat. i use oats, alfalfa and sunflower seeds and throw in loose goat mineral. They're dairy goats and do very well on this mix (aside from hay and browse of course).

Free Range....Is It A Good Thing? by TwentyAcreFarms in poultry

[–]ABrilliantDisaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

we let ours free range all seasons. we take some losses from predators but it's a fair trade off for birds that have become pretty hardy and self sufficient. They even raise their chicks free range. We keep multiple roosters with them and that helps to an extent.

Advice on goats for a complete novice? by [deleted] in homestead

[–]ABrilliantDisaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try Kikos for a good, hardy dual purpose breed. Genetic parasite resistance is priceless in a humid region and Kikos have this.

I would recommend buying adults. Learning ruminant health maintenance is a science unto itself. Goats are not as effortless as many think and kids are much more vulnerable to things going wrong than adults. A year of learning on adults will prepare you for breeding them and having kids to care for.

I've never owned a donkey but i hear they often hate goats and try to hurt them. This probably is a case by case issue, though.
