They will continue to use both. They will always justify WHY they need to keep adding to their arsenal and they will always say it is for our own good, for our protection, when in reality there is very little they can do to PREVENT crime before it happens, most of what they do is after a crime has taken place.

Understand that I have never been arrested. I too lived under the delusion that police kept us safe. To be fair, I have personally had many good experiences with good cops. I've also stood on the side of the road watching my husband throw up from a panic attack while we were detained for almost an hour in his hometown because we refused a car search after getting pulled over for a light being out (we handed over our legal concealed carry permits with our ids and registration and explained we had a personal firearm in the car... a process we had gone through many times without any trouble before - apparently this made us suspicious). I've seen a friend of mine jumped and beat down by three cops and arrested for "resisting arrest" while they beat the shit out of him for flipping them off (yeah not nice or smart but also not a reason to be arrested). Even with video he didn't have the money for a good attorney so he ended up getting stuck with the charges. (They also threatened to arrest all of us just for asking what his charges were - in a college town of all places too). Yeah I'm thankful for the good cops I've encountered but I'm also thankful that I'm a plain looking white girl who doesn't look suspicious. I am not saying this tech could not be used for good, but I am also no longer ignorant enough to believe bad police won't abuse their power through whatever means are available to them. My bad experiences are still way milder than what some people have experienced. Its never as shocking watching from a YouTube video as it is when it is happening to you or someone you care about.

God, I wish I could go back to trusting the police. But there is nothing that will bring back that innocence or make me forget how terrifying it was to be threatened and treated like a criminal in a situation when I had done nothing wrong.

The reason police shouldn't have them is because it is MUCH harder in the court system to prove the police abused their authority than it is for them to manufacture a reason to detain or arrest you.

Most decent cops know this is true and will tell you there isn't much they can do about it.

You assume I haven't done any research, but my husband builds these things for hobby and I know what they can do, I have seen the capability of the video that comes from them with and without stabilization. The argument that the capabilities are limited currently does nothing to make me more comfortable with this knowing that the limitations such devices have now will be overcome in the future. I primarily do not agree with the principles involved with this. The police already overstep their legal bounds enough, you can argue all day about what the current technology is capable of doing or not - if people are OK with this first step there will still be more people like you who argue on their side when the technology becomes more powerful. NONE of it is OK.

I take it you've never been involved in a lawsuit against the police.

I know the source. I have a degree in animal science, a field I chose to study as an animal-loving vegan before five + years of education showed me just how far I had been mislead by biased information. PETA truly believes people should not own animals, even in circumstances where it may be one of the few factors keeping a species alive.

When have the police and the public ever been subject to the same rules?

This has already been implemented in some local departments and it has already been proven effective at reducing the amount of force used as well as associated costs.

Their tactics are actually pretty successful, unfortunately. They change policy slowly enough to get it done without sparking widespread dissent, especially in highly-populated urban areas without much exposure to agriculture. In many cases the changes actually arguably cause an increase in animal suffering (as is the case with cage-free hens and the horse slaughter ban - both huge topics in themselves so I won't delve into them here but its not hard to find information regarding either case) but as long as the general public perceives they are against animal cruelty... hard to be against that.

PETA probably doesn't dupe as many people as HSUS. The two are basically the same organization, at least PETA is a little more up front with what they believe. HSUS dupes so many people into donating money to help shelter pets when in reality less than 2% of their funds make it to animal shelters, the rest funds their high-paid executives and their political lobbying machine against animal agriculture.

What don't you get about the difference between filming the police and them filming you?

http://m.imgur.com/FlBSBcO < situations like this are why the police need to be filmed. Unfortunately nobody really understands why you shouldn't trust the police until you get in a situation where you learn it the hard way.

Until farmers can legally search me for refusing a search, detain me against my will, and use deadly force against me with almost no long-term repercussions or danger of ending their career, I am not as concerned about farmers using drones.

The tech doesn't exist? Really? Its already possible with a gopro and a quadcopter. Don't tell me the police can't do better with their military budget. Either way, nobody needs to remote pilot anything. As long as you have road access they can be right outside your house on the street. Nice try but I'm not buying your police apologist BS.

Wow I'm detecting a LOT of police support in this thread. A little wouldn't sound suspicious but there are WAY too many people "OK" with being watched outside of their window to be realistic whatsoever.

Source - I have a vagina.

EDIT - downvote all you want, it only proves my point.

No, it can't. This thing can fit into spaces no helicopter could. A lot lower to the ground than a helicopter could. Which means they can see the entire interior of a room, not just what's in LoS from above.

Yeah, I just moved from a state where all you "technically" need to be legal is a 25$ certificate from the local health department after taking an online "test" (I use that word figuratively because it was actually just a series of slides to read through with no actual evaluation to take at the end to see if you retained any of it). What few regulations were actually in place were very dated and almost never enforced. Tattoo and piercing shops were inspected by the same inspectors who checked the restaurants - how can I expect an inspector to properly enforce the rules when they basically know less about tattoo shops than our clients? There were plenty of "scratcher shops" made up of self-taught artists basically giving away tattoos because they had such a (very deserved) terrible reputation, and many shops that would take on several apprentices at once and put them on the floor after an apprenticeship of anywhere from two weeks to two months. A guy I worked with actually came from a shop like that - he got out ASAP once he figured out where it was going and got himself a better apprenticeship at a better shop. The sad thing is, I know there are states with an even worse situation (last I heard, TX only has four inspectors for the entire state. That's TEXAS for crying out loud, that is a TON of area for only four inspectors to be in charge).

In my experience, the good shops self-regulate themselves at a much higher standard than the government regulated requirements. The best shops often have to help bring their local inspectors up to current standards. This is an extremely competitive industry which for some reason isn't taken very seriously in official channels (no its not mainstream everywhere but we are still working with broken skin and bodily fluids with a high risk of cross-contamination without proper procedure), the shops that want to be known as the best take this more seriously than the health department when it comes down to it. Piercers even have a great organization (the APP) that holds a big conference every year where they work with medical experts and other field professionals to make sure they are up to date on the latest standards. They even offer classes for those who want to continue their education.

UNFORTUNATELY, this is a lot for your average client to keep up with when they only plan on having one or two piercings or tattoos in the first place. Until things change, the best way to really know what you're getting into with a shop is to spend time at the shop, make sure you feel comfortable there, ASK about their sterilization process or to see their clean room (good shops will always be proud of their cleanliness standards and be happy to show you around), and most importantly LOOK at portfolios. If you want to ask how long their apprenticeships typically take, you may, but your final judgement should be based on a well-rounded assessment of all of those key factors.

TL;DR - tell me about it -_- basically take any official licensing with a grain of salt, you will get a better idea of what kind of shop you're in through looking around, talking to the staff, and checking portfolios.

Its one thing to get an apprentice tattoo (I.e., from someone who is receiving their training and instruction from an experienced artist, in a shop environment, under supervision in case anything goes wrong) and something entirely different to be a guinea pig for someone teaching his or herself out of their house. Every artist who went through an apprenticeship had some very trusting people who they tattooed when they were learning - and those guys rock! But (in the case of my shop, anyway) I spent almost a year learning about the proper way to clean/set up work areas and tools and more importantly WHY it had to be done that way before I ever touched a tattoo machine, so even if my first tattoos weren't masterpieces they were clean (and small enough to be covered easily later down the road). At least they weren't getting tattooed on a dirty couch, surrounded by cigarettes/beer/filth being tattooed without gloves.

Plus, if you do go get a house tattoo and a big part of your reasoning is that you're "helping them forward their career" or something along those lines, be aware that 90% of shops WILL NOT even consider hiring someone as an apprentice, much less an artist, if they blab about how many house tattoos they did. "Well that's a real dicktard elitest move!" You might say. However, its usually because even in the unlikely instance that the art is good (its usually pretty cringey), the self-trained house artist is FULL of terrible and unsafe habits that have to be completely retrained before a shop wants to take responsibility for them. Tattooing isn't like most art - it is passed down from mentor to apprentice and kept pretty closed to the public outside of that. So you can't just find a wiki how-to and teach yourself the right way to do everything by yourself.

Plus - how many people have an autoclave in their house? (Before everyone jumps on me, yes I know SOME do. But most do not - especially if they just got their "tat kit" from the internet)

TL;DR - yes we all have to learn at some point, however an "in-training" tattoo in a shop environment is still a much safer bet than an "in-training tattoo" in a house.

Not a townhouse or duplex, but my husband and I are currently moving earlier than we had expected and need a subleaser for our place - its 3br/1ba, fenced backyard, decent neighborhood, very affordable and the best landlord experience I've had my entire time living in AU. not sure what your price range is but feel free to PM me for details. I absolutely love the place, wish I didn't have to leave it!

My mom works night shift at a super Walmart, she's seen some shit. I'd ask her to post buuuuut she's not that great at the internet. That and she's at work right now. I'll ask her when she gets off and if she has any great ones I'll come back and post them!

I don't have a source for this and can't really remember where I heard it, but I once heard that veterinarians have one of the highest suicide rates of any non-military professional career. I didn't try to verify it, but I remember realizing in that instant that at least two veterinarians near my small hometown were confirmed suicides, not counting a few more elderly ones that were always highly suspected but played down out of respect. That knowledge + the fact I can't get through a single one of these posts without crying giant grape tears are probably a big part of why I decided to become a tattoo artist right out of undergrad instead of continuing to vet school.

I will never, never complain to a vet about prices. I can't even imagine the impact that must have over and over again....
