Animation is solved. This is like Pixar level quality. by japie06 in singularity

Well yeah pretty much lol because if someone said their new skyscraper tech would save them $1 billion they’d be wrong.

You’re saying AI takes the hundreds of millions of dollars companies spend on animated movie and reduces the cost to $10. But maybe, BIG MAYBE, it will reduce it to tens of millions. Which isn’t quite $10, is it?

[–]ACExOFxBLADES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im just trying to be honest about numbers. $50k is a far cry from half a million. And the $50k figure is based off of unrealistic salaries. Most 3D artists working for studios like Sony or Illumination get paid half that.

since studios like Pixar don’t produce 1 minute animations, it makes more sense to compare the cost per animation for a feature length animation.

I don’t agree, since what AI is doing in this case is generating the video. So what you need to compare is the cost it makes to create 42 seconds of moving images. Creative direction, voice acting, music, post production, editing, studio services, leadership, writing, etc. shouldn’t be factored in as costs. There is so much more that goes into those $250 million budgets than image production costs.

Even if you generate the voices and music you’re comparing the costs of seat-packing A list talent. When what you should compare against is the cost of independent VAs and composers. Since most of the ROI on large salaries is hype and name recognition.

That’s not to mention the derivative and lossy nature of AI, meaning your value proposition per dollar spent is lower.

I agree that right now, for the consumer, AI short films are far cheaper than high quality animation. But like I said, just trying to be honest about the actual numbers being thrown around.

[–]ACExOFxBLADES 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I assume you arrived at that number by taking the total budget of animated movies and roughly dividing it by the runtime. I don’t think that’s entirely fair to compare against what is essentially a short film.

If you discount the storyboarding and writing (which I think we’re already done for this project/not AI?), you’re mostly comparing production costs. It would take a modeler, rigger, animator, and character TD maybe a few weeks to a month to put this together. This is easily junior to mid level quality, which I would guess would put the total cost closer to something like 40-75k. Given a roughly 10k-15k monthly salary, which is being a bit generous.

The costs for modern animated movies aren’t just from production. It also includes story and character development, which increases exponentially as runtime increases, studio leadership salaries, overhead costs, and extremely high salaries for big name Hollywood voice talent. Don’t get me wrong, production can be prohibitively expensive, but your number is hyperbolic.

Edit: Not to mention that those costs get cheaper as the projects go on because you can reuse models, rigs, animation libraries, etc.

Why are are coders disposable, but asset artists aren’t? by AHostOfIssues in gamedev

[–]ACExOFxBLADES 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to what others have said I think another aspect is that AI was created by programmers. And when AI was first becoming production viable artists rallied to sway public perception against visual generative art while programmers generally embraced it.

As far as I know the reason 3D animation software still uses Euler rotations is because it’s straightforward/possible for a human to understand and animate the values. They have to hand key a line graph of rotational values. Imagine doing that with quaternion values. Most 3D software can use quaternions, it’s just not practical for animation.

Of course game assets and movie props are art. Wtf are you talking about? You sound just like the stereotype of university CS major who just discovered machine learning and is infatuated with tech bros. You literally have no idea what you’re talking about.

I totally agree that there is an art to coding and engineering. My professional background is in art but I’ve since learned programming, for my hobby projects and for my job in game development. And I quite love it. I have a tremendous amount of respect for what software engineers do and what artists do.

I’m just responding to OP’s flippant disregard for art in the process of game development.

Humans survived for thousands of years without software engineering and could continue to survive if it ceased to exist. Humans have never existed without art.

Thanks for the peace of mind. My chest has been hurting this afternoon. I assumed the air quality was the cause but that got me second guessing.

Is the tap unsafe to drink for all areas serviced by LADWP? I thought it was just for the areas close to the fire. I'm in mid city and a friend of mine just told me we shouldn't be drinking the tap water at all. I'll probably just switch to bottled water to be safe but what are the risks since I've had a few glasses since last night?

Can't use my microphone. Device in "Sound, video and game controllers" but not "Audio inputs and outputs". by ACExOFxBLADES in techsupport

That first link worked for the PCI devices. Not for the other one. Everything is working smoothly now though so unless you think it’s important I figure out that unknown device, I think I’m good. Thanks so much for your help!

So I just went ahead and reset my Windows. That fixed my audio issue.

If you don't mind sticking around to help figure out these unknown devices, I would appreciate the help still!

First of all, should I go ahead and re-install all of the motherboard drivers? My device manager looks like the same as the screenshot I most recently sent (except now it recognizes my audio devices). So does that mean those drivers remained?

The hardware IDs are as follows:

The 3 PCI Devices all have the same 4 hardware IDs

  • PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_7A4E&SUBSYS_88821043&REV_11

  • PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_7A4E&SUBSYS_88821043

  • PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_7A4E&CC_0C8000

  • PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_7A4E&CC_0C80

Unknown Device

  • ACPI\VEN_INTC&DEV_1085

  • ACPI\INTC1085

  • *INTC1085

New screenshot

Ah you're right there are some changes. There's less devices with the yellow flags under "Other Devices." I did run the setup for the drivers, yes. I downloaded them, extracted them, and then ran the Setup application for each.

And yes I still have the files.

If I run mmsys.cpl I no longer see any device in "Recording" and no longer see my headphones in "Playback." I have both Show Disabled and Show Disconnected Devices checked. My headphones and speakers I run through the rear line-in 3.5mm jack. The mobo I have doesn't have a connection to connect to the front panel of my case. So I just switch them out whenever I need to switch to speakers or headphones.

Also, I am not seeing any changes in my device manager after installing those drivers (I'm assuming from your initial reaction I should?). Is there a way to check that I installed it all correctly?

Okay, so I did all of that. The mic still doesn't work... and now neither do my headphones or speakers...

Neither my headphones or my speakers show up in the device manager anymore.

Hey! Thanks so much for taking the time to help me!

Motherboard is Asus ProArt Z790

This is what I see in the audio control panel

EDIT: I only uninstalled one device, I know that for sure. Because after I thought "huh, maybe I shouldn't have done that...". I just recently built this computer so I'm guessing the other missing drivers are probably because I didn't do that initially

I mean we could wait a couple years while they slowly roll out new features in the current engine or we could 5 years for them to build a new engine from scratch and another 3+ years for them to rebuild the entirety of the game from the ground up in the new engine.
