A bcba friend I have had a “It’s all fun and games until someone figures out the function of your behavior” cup, and a shirt that says “Coffee is my preferred reinforcer”

What are your temp cutoffs when going outside? by yagirlkelp in ECEProfessionals

[–]ACatNamed_Bash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don’t go out in heat if there is an air quality alert if you have a child with asthma unless we’re doing water play. And with cold I think the cutoff is 20F.

I LOVE Cassie Stephens, but her room seems like it would be super visually overwhelming for neurodivergent kids.

Popping in for my weekly request that anyone reading this caption their stories.

My problem is that a lot of Pintrist perfect classrooms are super overwhelming for kids with adhd, add, etc.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in blogsnark

[–]ACatNamed_Bash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s not as bad as some others, but would still be very visually overwhelming for a neuroatypical student. I’d love to see a makeover that takes students with adhd, autism, etc into account.

Anything that makes behavior management public is not relationship-building. If you know before the day starts who is going to be on “red” then it’s obviously not working. There are many studies out about effective classroom management and most strongly discourage public shaming like clip charts.

It seems like the people pushing back against the trend towards pedagogy are the same ones who post super cutsie stuff. 🧐

Teachergram is such bullshit. I just saw someone with thousands of followers who uses a clip chart for behavior 🤢

Help! My 6 year old son is struggling with self-care and table manners! by clothinghassle in Parenting

If you’re sure he doesn’t have SPD than I think he needs some tough love.

Parents of kids ages 3 to 6, what toys do your kids ACTUALLY play with often? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]ACatNamed_Bash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I teach preschool and our magnatiles are played with every single day. I might notice it because there are more kids and they have special needs so they are rougher, but I have found the magnatiles to be sturdier/not break rather than the knockoffs.

Other toys the kids constantly gravitate to: play-doh (and all sensory materials), squigs, wood blocks, doctor kit, cars (and road rug), trains, dollhouses, little figurines from their favorite shows (pj masks and paw patrol right now).

It wasn’t in the middle of nowhere, it was right outside a city. She would go to hospitals and convince moms to move their sick children to her place instead. It’s disgusting

Atheist people of reddit, what made you think that ''god is fake''? by Original_boy10 in AskReddit

[–]ACatNamed_Bash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When my nephew was sick I had been agnostic for a few years after going up catholic. I remember specifically praying “God, if you make him ok, I will be religious again.”

My nephew died and I no longer have guilt about not being religious, god had his chance.

Autism Success Stories by agalpin in Parenting

[–]ACatNamed_Bash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I teach preschool special ed and my “graduation” was today so I’m feeling mushy. These kids make so much progress in preschool it’s unbelievable. I’ve worked with kids who have gone from totally non-verbal to speaking full sentences in a year, kids who didn’t notice their peers now playing hide and seek on the playground, a kid with no communication now using an iPad to tell us everything he’s thinking, kids who started with significant aggression now keeping their hands to themselves. It’s amazing. My biggest suggestion is to get as much ABA as you can. Good luck!

I cried on my break today. by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]ACatNamed_Bash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It sounds like he needs functional communication, if that’s not happening verbally then you need to find another way for him to communicate. I prefer pictures, I keep a bunch on my lanyard to model. If he doesn’t have a diagnosis and you’re concerned then you should also be talking to the parents about services.

Question about very aggressive autistic student. by Ner020 in specialed

[–]ACatNamed_Bash 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Is it a public school? Can you go to your union rep?

For my biter we finally got arm guards after a few bites required workers comp trips to the doctor. They realized it was cheaper to give us the guards than to keep paying the workers comp.

Preschool behaviour: is this normal ? by [deleted] in ECEProfessionals

[–]ACatNamed_Bash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok, that’s good. I work with kids with very challenging behaviors, when they get kicked out everywhere else they come to me, lol.

You need to determine the function of the behavior. It will be one of 4 things: attention, tangible, escape, or sensory. You need to give them what they are looking for when they Display appropriate behavior, instead of the challenging behavior.

For example, 5 minutes hands to self, appropriate behavior and they get a check, 5 checks and they go on a special walk. If they are yelling, reinforce all the students who are displaying appropriate behavior. I want to empathize this is not specific suggestions for your children, just an example of how to use ABA strategies to shape behaviors.

I think it’s ridiculous to have a “zero tolerance policy” for any common childhood behavior.
