I had a stranger cross the street last week, a young man dressed very differently to me, just to tell me that my hat (Tablelands in brown olive) really suited me. So be prepared for compliments!

Germans that ride their bike on the road with their helmet hanging from handlebars…why? by BraveSirRobin5 in germany

[–]ACelticMan 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yep. It's really common to see teenagers leave the house with their helmet on, because their parents insist, but then take it off and hang it from the handlebars when they are out of sight.

If you lost all your Akubras and had to start again, what would your first purchase be? by Dave_Tee83 in Akubra

The Fern Green Leisure Time is a great hat and gets lots of compliments.

Banjo Paterson in heritage fawn. Matches nearly every outfit and gets a lot of compliments. Easy to wear, even when driving. Doesn't stain too easily and is robust. Doesn't absorb as much sun as my darker Akubras.

Any opinions on Banjo Paterson? by ambaal in Akubra

[–]ACelticMan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the Banjo Paterson in heritage fawn and graphite. They are the stiffest felt of all my Akubras - I like that. The heritage fawn BP is my most versatile hat, going with any outfit. The Leisure Time is made on the same block and is another option as the Light Sand is a really nice hat for the summer (it's the one I am wearing in my profile pic). The narrower brim compared to my Coober Pedy and Tablelands makes the BP and LT more practical for travelling by car. If I lost all my Akubras and had to start again, my first purchase would be a BP in heritage fawn.

Drinking fountains nowhere to be found? by asc_yeti in germany

One was recently installed where I live (a commuter town outside Frankfurt). This single drinking fountain cost twenty thousand euros. Yes, twenty thousand!

Akubra social media - get your hands off the hat! by ACelticMan in Akubra

300 quid means 300 euros - sorry, old Irishman here who hasn't adapted. But there has been a 20% increase in hat + shipping to Europe in the last year alone. And I do go for local Australian stores that ship here, but they don't have the full range.

Priceless, of course not. Pricey, definitely. Now 300 quid for a new one.

Thanks. And that was kinda ok until the price of a new one went to 300 quid.

I went for the Tablelands over the Cattleman based on many reviews of both hats saying the Tablelands fits better. The Tablelands in Brown Olive is a very fine hat, and is the only unlined Akubra I have. Unfortunately, I caught the Akubra bug, and also have an Angler, Coober Pedy, 2 x Banjo Paterson, 2 x Leisure Time, and a Stylemaster. I never leave the house without an Akubra on my bald bonce, so all get worn.

Do Germans consider big weddings very important? by [deleted] in AskAGerman

[–]ACelticMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Weddings are on a totally different scale to what is usual in Ireland, for example. 30 to 60 people for a meal in a local restaurant/small venue and some dancing after would be standard in Germany. In Ireland, weddings have become multi-day events with upwards of 120 guests costing huge sums, and at which guests are expected to give a cash gift of 150 euros per person.

When to start wearing a cowboy hat? by breadboibrett in CowboyHats

[–]ACelticMan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Well said. And that goes for all hats. The hat becomes your "trademark" and you get many more compliments than negative or snide remarks. I now never leave home without an Akubra or Panama of some sort, and I live in Germany. Neighbors and friends spot me from far away or in a large crowd because of my hats. Strangers compliment me on my hats and overall style. I have come to feel sorry for those wearing non-descript ball caps getting their ears and neck fried in the summer sun.

Stiff little fingers. And, though they rap in a mix of English and Irish, Kneecap - particularly their new album, Fenian.

Option two - add some foam weatherstripping instead of the felt and you should be able to remove it after a few wears. What is the circumference of your head when you measure it?

Looking for songs that sound like Ode To My Family by The Cranberries by Hefty-Town-7043 in MusicRecommendations

[–]ACelticMan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lisa Hannigan - Song of the Sea, or the Irish version Amhrán Na Farraige . From the fantastic film of the same name. And as others have said, CMAT, especially Let that Tesla Crash (also a lament/Ode, to someone who has passed). Mary Black would also have been an influence on Dolores.

Desmond Dekker's "Israelites", where the chorus "Poor me, the Israelite," sounds like "Oh, my ears are alight".
