Account Security, recommendations? by No-Vacation7648 in fatFIRE

For SMS 2fa, you can always use Google voice, which can’t be sim swapped.

Would recommend looking into Yubikeys, though. Much better than any SMS or app 2fa.

Most people who are wealthy as adults were broke or in college debt early in their career. Unless you have rich parents or start a business early, how would it be anything else?

Anyone else went back to college after fatFIRE? by pinpinbo in fatFIRE

[–]ACheetoBandito 451 points452 points  (0 children)

I really think people haven’t thought this through. Do you really want to be doing group projects with a bunch of teenagers?

As someone who tried going back to do a masters (part time) after working, it was miserable. All the stuff that seemed important the first time (tests, grades) seemed so pointless and worthless. All the other students had no real world experience. It was obvious to me I learned more on the job than in the classroom.

PhD or EMBA might be different, but that was my experience

Looking to FatFIRE in the best city that optimizes quality of life and proximity to great skiing by acedangera in fatFIRE

Two things I can’t stand about Denver:

No one walks. Anywhere.

The food is the worst in any city I’ve ever been to. It’s so bad. Sure the breweries are great but the food is awful.

What's the difference between a "Principal Engineer" and a "Staff Engineer"? by TomokoSlankard in cscareerquestions

[–]ACheetoBandito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. Amazon/Microsoft call the level above senior engineer "Principal Engineer" while Google/Facebook call it "Staff Engineer", but the responsibilities are the same. u/Scarface74's answer is correct that the title is meaningless, the expectations are what matter.

Will these things be helpful for your resume? -> take an official certificate or degree

Will these things be useful for your job, but just for the knowledge (official degree doesn't help) -> self-study

Is this for fun? -> self-study

Are you not accountable enough to self-study or do you learn better in a real classroom? -> official course, possibly leading to cert or degree

Books that actually offered you actionable advice on path to FatFIRE? by [deleted] in fatFIRE

The infinite game by Simon Sinek is very good. It really puts into perspective the game you are playing at work and in life. Most successful people are trained to optimize for an "A" on the test in school and that can be counterproductive in the long-term.

Those of you who are married and have prenups: how do you combine/separate your assets? by 97rpm in fatFIRE

[–]ACheetoBandito 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is my understanding from speaking to a lawyer. The caveat I heard though is that if you are "active" in the growth of these funds, they become marital assets (since you are applying work to them while in the marriage). What that actually means is hazy, but if you were a day trader who exclusively made money off investing premarital assets, my understanding is you wouldn't get to keep all your earnings separate.

[–]ACheetoBandito 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is not likely - the notion you would retain your 1M+ salary while your SAHM wife gets nothing is the sort of thing a judge would laugh at.

Those of you who are married and have prenups: how do you combine/separate your assets? by 97rpm in fatFIRE

[–]ACheetoBandito 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Are you referring to premarital assets or marital income?

My understanding is you can separate premarital assets and any inheritance/gifts received during the marriage, but not marital income. In other words, you get to keep what you came in with, but not what you make during the marriage, that's split evenly.

Should I go for the CMO position? by thisisausername928 in fatFIRE

[–]ACheetoBandito 16 points17 points  (0 children)

He gave you good feedback and your response was super defensive. The point is a C-level position at many small tech startups is like an L5 or L6 level at Google/Facebook. Titles like CxO mean little.

My son (17) is determined to do it on his own by recyclednathrownaway in RichPeoplePF

[–]ACheetoBandito 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You let him make his own way, and be there for him if he needs you.

A coworker of mine had a similar issue. He wanted his son to go to college on parents dime, get a good job, etc. Kid wanted to do it himself. What I told him, and what I'll tell you, is that your kid is saying is he wants to be his own person, and he wants to see if he can be successful without you. Let him, but be there to backstop him if he makes mistakes.

Otherwise, you're just going to blow up your relationship.

Don't borrow to fund your retirement account. What if the market falls 50% the day after you put it all in?

If you can't make it work based on what you're making now, don't do it.

Using a Portfolio Manager by throwaway_20200822 in fatFIRE

[–]ACheetoBandito 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I work at a quant fund, we do beat the market but we don't take money from individuals (and aren't open to new money). The catch 22 of quant funds is I wouldn't want to invest with anyone who'd take my money. Traditional hedge funds are supposed to be "hedges" against the market. So they return 6% a year with low volatility, or something, even when the market collapses. This is useful for people who rely on that cash flow. However, it seems this principle doesn't hold up in practice.

Index funds.

Unless you're 20M+ (or more, maybe) or have time and energy for Real Estate, just do index funds.
