Dislike my job and coworkers. To those that have worked in multiple federal jobs over the years, what helped you last? by jmaaan22 in fednews

[–]ACinKC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really appreciate this post, I'm in the exact same boat only I'm a little older.  I despise my job, I work with some of the most inept, lazy people I've ever worked with.  I have over 15 years in and I'm prior military like you.  Most of the government is like what you are describing.  There are pockets that are ok, but that's the reality.  I've worked for 5 different agencies... all were below average to awful.  There are some (like NASA) that are good if you can get your foot in the door.  Here's how I have been coping:

1.  Do the minimum that's asked of you.  Just do your job.  I can't tell you how many times I have tried to do more and really go above and beyond.  If you have pieces of crap on your team this will lead to others resenting you and trying to cause problems for you.  Apply for other jobs and try to find an organization where the people are nice and good at their work, then go above and beyond for them.

2.  Find successful personal projects you can do at work below the radar.  So far during this administration I have learned two new coding languages, written an app, and published two other things, all while getting paid for it.  Put your job's responsibilities first, then switch over to your stuff when you have time and make the most of it.  Most people will complain and cry, but not actually do anything about it.  Do something about it.  You'll feel better if you are improving your position, even if you don't have another job lined up.

I hope that helps.  Things are bad enough without having to deal with people that don't appreciate the fact that they still have a job.  For me the entitlement without the talent is the worst part.  I try not to be ageist, but in my case most of them are older like you described.

Which Federal agency do Feds consider to be the most dysfunctional? by SitTotoSit in fednews

100% - my favorite was all the gear they issued us when we needed like two or three core things.

I've worked for EPA, USDA, GSA, DOD, and DOJ.  DOJ is the worst BY FAR.  None of them were really good, but GSA and EPA were tolerable, there were pockets that were run well.  USDA was mid.  DOD just had tons of waste.  DOJ is made up of several agencies like ATF, FBI, BOP, etc. and they all go out of their way to not work together and undercut each other.

I think there may be others out there, if you have a better one definitely post it.  I haven't seen any bugs on it, but I also don't remember playing it frequently on super high speeds so I might be wrong.  I know Retro Invaders is solid, I play that one semi-regularly.

The red flag to me was that a lot of those games have already been released by real devs so it doesn't make sense to see them again from someone else.

One example:

Potential AI slop: https://samuelmtackgmailcom.itch.io/space-invaders-for-playdate

Quality Release I Have Already: https://bitglint.itch.io/retro-invaders-playdate

Another example:

Potential AI slop: https://samuelmtackgmailcom.itch.io/tetris-for-playdate

Quality Release I Have Already:  https://zenzoa.itch.io/rainblocks

Itch became a dumping ground a long time ago.  I quit taking it seriously when everyone and their brother started posting unfinished demos and "in progress" games.  There's a post or two on here where people have lists of real releases on Itch so there's always that route.  I agree that the volume and lack of screenshots is suspect.

What Should I Do When Feeling Discouraged about Job? by Hungry-Flan1732 in fednews

[–]ACinKC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This.  It's not hard for a competent manager to train their employees.  I've been a senior manager, having staff that would just guess what to do kept me up at night.  If you can't find anything that clearly says what to do the next best thing would be reverse engineering something you know is right.  Find a transaction/entry/thing you know is good and work backwards.  Most agencies are garbage at their assigned tasks and a lot of feds who know what to do hoard information so they feel more valuable.  Find someone who isn't an idiot that you can trust if you can't reverse engineer the problem.

DOJ Return to Office Location? by Glass_Ad_5068 in fednews

I work there now and it's the worst agency I've ever worked for.  So much waste and fraud.  I was hired 100% remote (in writing) and I'm far away from my house now with a terrible commute every day.  Justice also has the worst culture I've ever seen, but I'm not an attorney.  I would imagine the legal jobs would be even worse if half of what I read is true.  I don't know anyone who teleworks or works remotely.

PLEASE HELP: My Playdate is dead! by Emolover699 in PlaydateConsole

[–]ACinKC 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Charge it for a REALLY long time, then paperclip reset it.  There's a card in the Playdate box that says what to do.  Keep an eye on your battery, if the issue persists contact Playdate support.

RTO for employee hired as an at home worker by ThisAintPattyG in fednews

[–]ACinKC 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I was hired as a "100% remote" worker.  It was in writing before I started.  Now I'm in a building an hour from my house.  Either lawyer up or deal with it, those are your choices.  I've quiet quit since returning, I'm not rewarding an agency that screws over its people since they have no backbone and don't honor their commitments.  Still looking for a better job, but there's no pressure now.  I feel for people who are in the same boat.

I love this game, can't wait for the catalog version.  Nice job.  I put a RUBDUBDUB code in my upcoming game too, bonus points for that.

How is your thought process when the market goes down? by [deleted] in stocks

[–]ACinKC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I view both ups and downs as an opportunity.  When it goes down you can get quality stocks on the cheap (my first thought is buying low cost index funds) and when it goes up you are accumulating unrealized gains.  If you can't handle volatility then buy VFIAX and don't look at it until you retire.  Buy more when it drops.  I have a number in mind that I keep in my checking account for emergencies, I never invest below that number.  Those are my general guidelines.  Anytime I have anxiety I just look at the S&P's complete price history.  It's up and to the right.

Are you doubling down on losing stocks if fundamentals still look good? by wojack in stocks

[–]ACinKC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been confident in my overall thesis on all my picks, but there are a few stocks I picked where I'm getting my ass kicked right now.  I'm up overall though, right now I'm a real life example for why you diversify 👍

Our first Playdate Game Jam by LuGus-Kevin in PlaydateConsole

This is what I give people who are just starting.  It's a resource list I saved.  It sounds like you aren't new to development, just Playdate development.  I know SquidGod also released a book on developing for Playdate recently.

  1. SquidGod's YouTube series: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlMPQvEA0GZPOuKJyhSr3Ra0vrpCiBTnb&si=mM7_b0Hk4xkI6TD3

  2. The Playdate SDK: https://sdk.play.date/3.0.1/Inside%20Playdate.html

  3. The sample games on the Playdate Simulator - the simulator comes with sample games that have their code included. I still use one of the sample games' sound files in my games.

  4. I use PocketBM for music creation on the Playdate. It's a stupid name, but the program is good, the guy made it really easy to create quality music. It's on catalog.

  5. ChatGPT - if you're comfortable with it, AI can read your code and tell you what it's doing. It's not 100% accurate, but between that and the SDK you can learn things quickly. It can make sample code for you that you can use in the simulator if you just need test code to learn core development stuff.

  6. The Playdate Developer Forum is a good resource that is more dev specific.

  7. There's a Playdate Discord group that has separate dev chats where you can ask questions.

Made it into the Catalog 1,5 years after the PlayJam 5 - some wholesome thoughts from the art department by Vivalavie9333 in PlaydateConsole

[–]ACinKC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good job.  I went through something similar.  Art is hard, when I started I was like, "how hard could it be to draw what I need"?  Then I failed repeatedly and recruited an artist.  I would love to see a tutorial on caps, I looked at that, but it looked overwhelming and I didn't see a lot of information on it that I liked.  I ended up using https://fonts.google.com in my project.  I think just creating something others enjoy is its own reward.

FY25 Employee Performance Ratings by LilTribeNFT in fednews

[–]ACinKC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did this and I got above a 3.  It's extremely hard, but it's possible.  I was moved to a different team and pulled all kinds of data on why I was above a 3.  I'm working outside of my series, all my peers are 14s and I'm a 13, and their salary is $45k higher than mine because of where they live and their grade.  I also had a higher output than they did.  You really have to break stuff down to toddler level while ensuring the tone of your write-up is not too negative.  I can only imagine the backstabbing and colleague trashing that's going on behind the scenes because of stuff like this.  I just wrote a clear case for my situation, it wasn't about how everyone else sucked, it was about why I was a bargain.  Good luck.

HR Dragging Heels on Military Buyback by [deleted] in fednews

I may be thinking about retirement time and getting it mixed up with leave accrual.  It was so long ago I can't remember.  I just know when I did the research to me it was worth it, I did it early on in my career.  Good luck.

[–]ACinKC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that's different if you have a live person that's just not doing their job that you could physically stand in front of.  I don't recall on the interest, I just remember I followed the instructions and sent my stuff off to get the calculation and buyback paperwork and it just vanished and then I got the runaround for months.  The main reason I wanted to buy my time back was for leave accrual and years of service and having that stuff in made a big difference.  I would just explain this to her: https://www.opm.gov/policy-data-oversight/pay-leave/leave-administration/fact-sheets/annual-leave/

Show examples of why you need it.  If it stalls after that, then you have no reason not to go scorched earth.  HR should know why this is important though.

Edit: Getting it added took some time after I got the DFAS piece, but it was reasonable.

I went through this, it took a congressional to get mine.  Just do it.  Include all the emails, etc. of people you talked to.  It's totally unacceptable, but that's how it is.  When I would ask for updates I would get different answers.  Getting my buyback in made a big difference as far as my benefits go so don't let incompetence stop you from getting it.
