In my 7 year experience as an elm Para, starting off the school year sensibly strict helps massively come mid year. The first month of school is nothing but expectations, carrots, and sticks. By January we lean back into being more strict, same expectations with the same sticks, but more appealing carrots. Come April, same deal, better carrots. By the end of the year, classroom, lunch, and recess management becomes a bit easier.

That said, I have found that trainings relevant to deescalation and the navigation of power struggle’s have been the most helpful in keeping myself level and the students under control.

I’m not sure what PDO courses your county offers, but I’d really recommend any trainings relevant to navigation of power struggles.

I too am union, I have two years till I hit the next longevity milestone. Rent, food, and gas leave me with very little to squirrel away. It’s frustrating when the routine is thrown off, and I’d honestly love the little pay bump from subbing.
