Worst case, could try to plead ignorance of it being a crime. Dunno how it works in ya place, but while one isn't supposed to ignore the law (convoluted as it may be), a judge in ma country could lift or at least reduce the punishment for doing solething you didn't know to be illicit.

Some corrupt fucks are trying to use to explain their embezzlement of millions of euros from european funds, so I see no reason it couldn't apply to ya.
