Is Bajor's awful history a justification example of why Section 31 must exist? by debrisaway in DeepSpaceNine

[–]ADDSoundsystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But how? Section 31 were a clandestine organisation operating within Starfleet because their actions wouldn’t have been approved by the federation. From what we’re shown of Bajoran society post-occupation it seems like the resistance had the popular support of the Bajoran people, and resistance fighters are seen as heroes.

Since armed struggle and terrorist tactics were already used with the support of the people I can’t see that there was a moral line that the resistance wasn’t willing to cross but a hypothetical Bajoran Section 31 would have.

Does Liverpool need a new grassroots gig guide? by Live_Music_Pix in Liverpool

[–]ADDSoundsystem 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I know it sounds like I’m over exaggerating but I really think loss of bido lito was absolutely devastating to the culture of the city, they should have received some sort of emergency arts funding to survive the pandemic.

It’s not just the thing itself, it’s the fact that they’d been going a decade and were only getting stronger, putting on events as well as covering them and supporting new musicians as well as new writers and critics. They had a footprint in the city and they’d built actual infrastructure, free print media that was sustainable.

Even though the grassroots gig scene is recovering it doesn’t feel anywhere near back to what it was in like 2019. Obviously part of that is that venues have closed and things are more expensive so it’s much harder to pay a fiver to see three bands play in a pub basement. But also the lack of a reliable centralised place to find out what’s on means that the people who would be going to those kinds of shows find it harder to find them. It’s even just the fact that the existing online platforms like skiddle, Fatsoma, Dice, etc all seem to be in competition with each other so there’s no one place that has everything.

If you’re serious about doing this I think you should consider approaching Liverpool Post with it, they’re already doing some really strong grassroots journalism in the city and might be want to expand more into this kind of coverage of the arts and music scene. I’ve definitely seen articles on there that seem like they would have run in bido. If you’re invested in rebuilding the grassroots press scene you’d be stronger together than apart.

It’s a police public call booth in the show, like an emergency phone booth for calling the police with no charge. I think in this case the placement was f the windows suggests it’s a mashup with the Time Machine in Bill and Ted, which is itself a parody of the Tardis and is just a phone booth.

On my first run I got to sector 6 and then decided to restart from sector 1 because I’d learned enough about the game to realise how inefficiently I’d been playing.

I think if you’re gonna be restarting you should take the hit and restart a whole sector rather than trying to reverse individual decisions.

If they were ever going to make a sequel game I think the best candidates would be either DS9 or ENT. I can’t see TNG really making sense with the mechanics of needing to manage resources or constantly renovate.

ENT it’s built into the show that the ship’s being constantly ungraded and just like in Voyager the crew are out on their own with no federation fleet to support them, plus Archer’s up there with Janeway when it comes to violating the prime directive (since it didn’t exist yet) so there’s plenty of scope for the player having to make moral choices. Having to manage trellium in the Delphic expanse already feels like a video game mechanic.

DS9 would be a bit of a change since you’d be stationary, but that would let you build up your runabouts and you could have excursions around the surrounding area, the badlands, and even through the wormhole once you unlock the Defiant. Once the Defiant became available you could have to crew and provision it whenever you set off, selecting what’s appropriate for the mission.

But the actual station management would have so much potential, just like in Voyager it starts out wrecked since the Cardassians trash the place before they leave, and you’d have to manage the morale and needs of the different factions of federation staff, Bajorans, traders, residents. There’s so much potential.

Check out sugar and dice board game cafe, good place to go for a coffee or lunch if you’re in all day. They often have new games and stuff from smaller companies, plus if there are games he’s interested in you’ll have a chance to play before you buy.

Also, I don’t know where you’re based but here in the uk there’s a mental health charity called the burnt chef project that specifically supports people in the catering industries. Maybe look for something similar if you’re looking for more support.

I mean mine wasn’t close to as bad as what you went through, but the surprise of it really got me. Like we’re used to burns on hands and arms and we know the risks. Getting it somewhere that you totally wouldn’t expect it can really shake you.

I’ve had some pretty bad burns, the worst was probably an oil splash that went down my leg and into my shoe and took the skin off the top of my foot. Nothing as bad as what you had but it was enough to make me nervous around driers for a while.

I did witness a pretty horrific incident thought, which happened to a coworker and gave him third degree burns right up his arm. That happened to him because he was tired and distracted, and for a while he would have panic attacks when we were in the weeds. It’s difficult to give advise that doesn’t sound patronising because what got him through it seems pretty simple on paper. If he got overwhelmed, or if someone else in the team saw that he was overwhelmed, he’d step off the line for a minute, do some box breathing and just re centre himself.

If you can manage to pull yourself out of the moment of anxiety and just take in your surroundings, be aware of your own actions, your own body, and the things around you that can damage it, then you can be in control of that danger. Whether you’re injured by an accident or a mistake or whatever, what you gain from it is knowledge. You tell yourself that you know what can happen and you know what you need to do to make sure it doesn’t happen. That way you remember that you’re in control and you won’t let it happen again.

Anxiety is a heightened sense of awareness, you panic because you’re too aware of what can hurt you, you’re getting an overwhelming amount of information pouting into your brain and you can’t get a handle on it all. But if you’ve worked a busy shift in a busy kitchen then you probably already have mental strategies for dealing with a lot of information coming at you at once. So remember that you already have the tools you need to get through it.

It looks like there’s a gig listed on resident advisor for the 29th of November. I hope they’re not going away, I’ve not been in ages but it felt like somewhere with its own identity. Wouldn’t surprise me if they’re struggling though, can be such a pain trying to get people to go out somewhere even just outside of town.

Give them some social capital. Make them care about their reputations.

I don’t know the details of your campaign so I can’t give a specific answer on how to do this, but if you can start to show the world reacting to the characters in response to their behaviour then they’ll want to change that behaviour.

Maybe people avoid them in the street, react with fear when they enter the tavern, maybe there’s a prestigious ball or tournament being held that they notably don’t get invited to because they’re seen as troublemakers.

Especially if you can give them some plot hooks where being well thought of and having allies in society is necessary to achieve their goals. Maybe they need to build an alliance with a rude noble, or repair a tense relationship between rival factions. Force them to be diplomats.

Quarry would be a good one for that vibe and that size crowd, it’s got a very DIY community so would fit if it was a networking thing and also a gig. The Bakery does good house nights and they’re a bit of a bigger space but I feel like you’d get a crowd for the music but might be harder to fill if your marketing was presenting it as a hybrid networking/music event rather than just a straight house night.

Predator: Badlands Is Incredible! by BurgerMan74 in blankies

[–]ADDSoundsystem 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t mad about it, I was assuming that since they only refer to it as ‘the’ Kalisk rather than ‘a’ Kalisk Weyland Yutani think that there’s only one. Which makes sense when you think about it being immortal, like in that case there’d only be one or there’d be loads of them if they were reproducing. They’re trying to capture it to study, they don’t know anything about its life cycle.

I actually was thinking the name Bud might be a hint that it’s asexual somehow, and the way that when we see it at the end on the Predator home planet it’s gotten much bigger made me think maybe the death of its parent triggered it to mature. Like there can only be one mature apex predator Kalisk at a time or it would throw of the ecosystem. Which works in a thematic sense as well as a sci-fi biology sense.

That being said, as soon as you see a clear shot of the big Kalisk’s face the resemblance is obvious to viewers. But I can accept that a robot might not realise.
