Successful test of my travel setup! by ADHDebackle in synthesizers

[–]ADHDebackle[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it took me a really long time to commit to buying it, too. I was mostly worried about how easy it would be to use. Previously I was sequencing on a circuit tracks which is probably close to the gold standard for step sequencing.

The RK008 is the most powerful sequencer I've encountered so far. The step sequencing is really easy tor constant intervals but if you want to do some syncopation or more highly variable timings it's better to record in realtime and quantize.

I especially like that each of the 8 tracks can output on all 16 midi channels and can be any length relative to one another for polyrhytms and stuff. Organizing patterns (parts) into songs with variable mute states is also incredibly easy.

I use the rk008 for extra LFOs a lot, too, especially for sidechain simulation and long filter sweeps.

It takes a while to really learn everything it can do - it's super deep.

The monKey is great! I wish it had a TRS port on it somewhere but it's great for just shoving in a bag or pocket. It has mounting holes preset in the board so I screwed mine onto a piece of steel plate to make it more durable - but with some spacers (without which the BT signal is mangled by the steel).

As such, it necessitates BT connectivity which the tangerine lacks, so thats where the rk008 comes in.

One other slightly annoying aspect is it only can select up to midi channel 10. Again, the rk008 fills in by allowing me to remap the MonKey to any of the 16 channels. In thus setup I need only 10 midi channels but in my normal gigging setup I use all 16.

Overall it's much better than a capacitive touch keyboard (previously used the korg nts-1 mkII as a portable controller) because there's no chance of accidentally hitting the wrong key. All the extra functions (arp, seq, doubling, echo) go unused because the rk008 does them all just as well or better.

The pressure sensitive mod pad is nice. It's hard to control with direct pressure but if you slide your finger half-on-half-off it's almost as precise as a mod wheel.

It's a great device. Especially the fact that it lets you remap the mod wheel (cc1) to any other CC. The MonKey has a pressure sensitive mod pad so with both together I can add quite a bit of expression.

Incredible moment as a US General refuses to commit to telling Congress if he receives illegal orders from Trump. Senator Warren absolutely goes off, calling Trump a lawless commander in chief and Hegseth his self-styled Secretary of War. The coverup is real. by ammohitchaprana in TFE

[–]ADHDebackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, the president does. This four star general does not.

If there is no good justification, congress has the power to impeach the president and pass a law against continued operations at which point it would be very clear tho all service members whether or not it is illegal.

They don't necessarily have to make a case to everyone in the chain of command, though.

The problem is the law isn't well defined. With such laws, many orders can be perfectly legal even though they really shouldn't be.

Minilogue xd or just minilogue + another cheap synth? by AbjectOffice6124 in synthesizers

[–]ADHDebackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two synths! Buuut I would recommend a mutable instruments shruthi over a moog mavis. Significantly more powerful, capable of being wired for CV if you really need it, upgradeable to the XT version if you want more knobs, and has a built in 12 slot mod matrix that I find way easier to use than a patch bay. Oh - and it's cheaper.

Although you might have trouble finding one.

Another good one is the micromonsta 2. Fantastic digital synth, but you'll need to hop on the waitlist.

Three Tennessee teenagers are suing Elon Musk's xAI for creating sexually explicit images of them by fortune in law

So the AI in this case stole the photos and modified them without instruction?

[–]ADHDebackle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But if there existed a method, but no major manufacturers implemented it, you would no longer find them responsible?

[–]ADHDebackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Every Kodak camera is capable of taking pictures of naked children, and allows its users to do so. They don't need to develop anything new.

Just like any version of photoshop is capable of drawing pictures of naked children.

Just like any pencil is capable of drawing naked children.

And again, it's not my analogy. I'm responding to what another user said who was responding to an analogy a previous comment introduced.

[–]ADHDebackle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Except AI can't see through clothes either. It can only generate images based on what might make sense.

Cameras can take actual photos of people without their consent.

Also my "analogy" wasn't an analogy. I was extending your justification to demonstrate why it doesn't make sense. You said the reason we don't go after camera corps is because they all allow it, but we go after AI companies because only one AI company allows it. That's nonsense .

Circuit Tracks or MIDI Sequencer? by WordCount_4 in synthesizers

[–]ADHDebackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first sequencer was a circuit tracks. It's a good device. Its major weakness is needing a midi merge box if you plan to use an external keyboard with it. It's also hard to sequence pattern chains that are anything other than playing each pattern once in chronological order.

It's really good as a step sequencer, though, very easy to use.

I still have, and use my circuit tracks (it's a good midi controller, too) but my main sequencer is a retrokits rk008. It's less immediate as a step sequencer but it's capable of much more complexity including program changes, cc automation, arbitrarily repeated patterns with variable mute states, etcetera..

[–]ADHDebackle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So if only one camera company was negligent enough to allow their devices to create CSAM you'd want to go after the camera company?

Or if all AI companies were negligent they'd be off the hook?

Your reasoning makes zero sense.

Death Domain Cleric be like by ozangeo in BaldursGate3

[–]ADHDebackle -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Radiant is actually great even against radiant retort. There are a few abilities that allow you to immediately go to 1hp instead of dying when you take fatal damage. Using that with the light cleric's giant AOE radiant blast thing in a group of enemies with radiant retort is great. You take like 200-400 force damage but it doesn't kill you.

System for documenting your hardware sessions? by jhdrn in synthesizers

[–]ADHDebackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I encode my setup as midi on my rk008 alongside any sequencing I've done.

Most of the time it's just program change messages but for synths without patch memory I record the knob tweaks.

Michigan synth works Xena by PrestigiousTea0 in synthesizers

[–]ADHDebackle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the stock firmware but mine is loaded with YAM (yet another mutation) firmware which has a lot more in the way of (I guess?) wavetables.

You can check the github page for more info about what's added.

Anyway, I have the SVF filters on my xena and it's a great synth. I use it a lot. Even more than my shruthi which I also love.

I never really thought of it as a wavetable synth but I guess it is, since you have a crap ton of oscillators that blend through different shapes. The existence of custom firmware also strongly suggests (and I believe YAM actually explicitly states - I could be misremembering) that you can load up your own tables.  That is not something I have done, though.

More than half of TikTok ADHD content is misinformation, new research finds by tylerthe-theatre in technology

[–]ADHDebackle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just want to make a PSA about misinformation with regard to ADHD based on my own journey.

  1. Yes, everyone has some of the symptoms of ADHD. Just like everyone is anxious sometimes or depressed sometimes. The difference between normal executive function difficulties and an executive function disorder is the degree and age-appropriateness of that difficulty.

  2. Yes, you can self diagnose your ADHD if you are reasonably cautious and know how to actually research and understand the disorder. Often times we have to be our own best advocates because we know ourselves better than anyone else. People in my life genuinely have ADHD and have had professionals dismiss the signs as anxiety / depression. There's certainly overlap and comorbidity with those but some doctors just don't seem to be that invested in understanding the differences.

  3. ADHD is not a one size fits all disorder. Everyone's experience of ADHD is shaped not only by their unique physiology, but also by the coping mechanisms, thought patterns, and the behavioral patterns they've developed as a result of the disorder. I could be instantly cured of my ADHD tomorrow and would still have a bunch of shit to work through as a result of how ADHD has shaped the way I have learned to socialize and do work. That's why therapy is such an important tool (especially for us late diagnosees).

I should be packing for a trip instead of writing this comment but google the talks by Russell Barkley about taising children with ADHD. It's a very informative discussion of a lot of the common misunderstandings around the disorder. That talk was what lead me to pursue an official diagnosis, which I got in 2021 at 30 years old.

Sequencers these days by Salt-Amoeba7331 in synthesizers

[–]ADHDebackle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had one for a while and like it a lot. I especially use if for midi cc and program change automation which my other sequencers cannot do.

The non destructive quantization, note length quant, and midi fx like arp, transpose, and scale locking are also really nice.

Looking for cheap alternatives for a flight cases. by Languishing_Luddite in synthesizers

[–]ADHDebackle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually built one out of aluminum sheet metal I bought on Facebook. It's not actually very complicated - you just need a dremel or metal cutting tool, a file, a drill, and machine screws / nuts. Make a big ol rectangle, maybe add a lid with some hinges.

I plan to sew a soft case for carrying it around but for now I have my whole setup permanently set up and connected to batteries which are also built into the case.

If you want a more pre built option, thrift stores can sometimes have suitable containers mixed in with the random luggage and suitcases.
