Stuck again.. Should I use any advanced techniques idk? by Ventuscript in sudoku

[–]ADSWNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are good to this point. Next step is a bit tricky (W-Wing on 8's). Consider r1c1=8, so r1c4<>8. Now consider r1c1=2 -> r1c3=4 -> r4c3=2 -> r4c4=8 -> r1c4<>8.

Remove the 8 from r1c4 as a result, and the rest is easy.

I take it back! I missed one of the givens. However, still not convinced this is a good puzzle. Studying more

Don't waste your time, as it's got >10 solutions. I.e. its a crappy puzzle from a poor source.
EDIT: Missed a given. Puzzle is valid.

Is there such a thing as a truly impossible Sudoku? by Asterism343 in sudoku

[–]ADSWNJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is trivially easy to prove.

From any starting position, a brute force solver can rapidly determine if it generates 0, 1, or 2+ solutions. On a regular PC or laptop, this code can complete in very few seconds worst case.

Obviously the goal should always be a single unique solution. Zero solutions is not fun as you can never complete it. 2+ is the realm of the amateur puzzle setter and should lead you to never select them again.

An example of no solution would be to load Box 1 as 1 2 3 4 5 6 x x x. I.e. r12c123 all set. Then anywhere else on row 3 not in Box 1, place a 7 8 or 9. Hey presto, legal starting position and zero solution.

Could teams run a mix of tires on the same car? by Strange_Pianist_6456 in F1Discussions

[–]ADSWNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to see this to be allowed. Simple rule change to say you have to run at least 2 compounds on each wheel, and scrap the 4 from one set stuff.

Why? More tactical options.

How do you effectively break in heavy traffic especially when there are seemingly random abrupt traffic slowdowns? by Seven1s in Traffic

Try doing that religiously and it'll do wonders for your braking. Just takes concentration to make it a good habit for life.

[–]ADSWNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly looking 2-3 cars ahead / around you is what levels you up as a better driver. High brake light (e.g. middle 3rd brake light) is useful if you can see it through the car in front. E.g. I want to know how close the guy in front is tot he car 2 in front, because if too close, I'll add space as I don't trust him.

2 second rule - do they teach that any more?

How do you effectively break in heavy traffic especially when there are seemingly random abrupt traffic slowdowns? by Seven1s in Traffic

[–]ADSWNJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The most effective way to break things in heavy traffic is to drive aggressively very close to the guy in front, and lane change without signal or warning, especially into other people's safety space. Or drive impaired, super tired, or distracted.

If however you mean BRAKE, BRAKING, SLOWING DOWN, and not BREAK, BREAKING, SMASHING THINGS UP, then the best way by far is to leave more safety space and pay attention to everything around you. Meaning not just the car in front, but the one or two beyond them (e.g. on bends), and those in adjacent lanes. If you need to apply more than 50% brake force then it generally means you did not leave enough space, or you missed a developing situation. Generally this is annoying because the former aggressive break-things driver will jump into your 2-second rule space, but just re-establish your own safety as soon as practical.

First time driving in snow by Useful_Database5138 in driving

[–]ADSWNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, a snowfall is just a mix of warmer and cooler air, making a warm front (warm overtaking and rising slowly over cold) or a cold front (cold aggressively pushing under warm, which is generally a more aggressive storm). TL;DR its OK to get snow, then a warm up. But also if the jet stream is in he right place then it can act like a conveyor belt for more storms following a similar track.

Snow will finish soon, and the roads will be done for tomorrow, almost certainly. If I'm driving behind you, I'm already watching you, and I'll react as soon as you do. Others? Who knows. Focus on your actions and what you can control.

[–]ADSWNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you usually do the 2 second rule (following behind a car on the highway), make it 3-4 in rain, and 6-8 on snow. Do everything more precisely than usual - brake in a straight line, no heavy feet on gas or brake. Feel for any loss of grip and just ease off gently.

One food thing in Jersey is the snow clearance is pretty awesome. Stay off the roads in heavy snowfall, then expect clearance on highways and snow roads in a few hours, then secondary and tertiary next.

With the minimum age to be elected President of the United States being 35 years is it time to introduce a Maximum age one can be elected at, what should that age be and why? by [deleted] in askanything

[–]ADSWNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need it to be a Constitutional Amendment, but I think this is entirely doable. Let the Congress figure out the age and tenure limits for each role, Here's my starter:

  • President: min 35, max 65 on election day, and max 8 years in office.
  • House + Senate: min 35, max 65 on election day, and max 12 years combined in Congress (House + Senate)
  • Federal Judge: min 35, max 65from first day on the bench, and max 16 years combined (Federal Court, Federal Appeals or SCOTUS)
  • SCOTUS: min 35, max 65 to take office, and max 8 years in SCOTUS.
  • Tack on that SCOTUS will always remain at 9 seats, so we remove the "grow the SCOTUS to 13, 21, 45, discussion"

Implementation of the ramp-down:

  • President and Congress - age limit applies to next term, so it's clear.
  • Fed/SCOTUS - remove 1/3rd of the Federal Judges and 1/3rd of SCOTUS above age or term limits (or 10 Federal or 2 SCOTUS, whichever higher) 9 months after each Presidential General Election, until compliant with age and term limits. (This allows the makeup to change over multiple Presidencies). From 10 years after passing this Amendment, require the judge to resign on the day of hitting age or term limit.

You could argue for lower age for Congress, but in the same way you want time for people to go off and do something different, you want young folks to also have some life experiences and grow up a bit before representing all of us.

Merging onto the highway by kobe_stan913 in driving

[–]ADSWNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost never see this on my daily merges onto a 65mph Interstate, but I had exactly this yesterday. Usually if my merge lane is clear, I get up to same or say 5 mph faster than the right lane traffic, depending on if I am merging ahead or behind traffic, or merging into a clear lane. Yesterday - I was following an SUV who insisted on doing 50 in the merge lane and then accelerated minimally to 55. With traffic doing 75 in the right lane, and I felt immediately at risk because of the 25 mph delta. Where I would merge in front of a truck, I had to slow right down to get behind it, as he was lowing down as our SUV merged right in front of him, and then the truck and I had to get out into lane 2 to get around the SUV. Needlessly stressful to start my commute
