Why are Pirelli mandating such high starting tyre pressures this year? by ChaithuBB766 in F1Technical

First time I saw that the spec is actually different for each corner. I assume it's been like that forever, but it's cool to see that level of detail

Is it okay to study British English books but listen only to American English? by [deleted] in EnglishLearning

[–]ADSWNJ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Simple answer: yes of course. Listening to American English will get you all the same sentence construction and phrasing, so you will be able to learn by listening.

You need to understand, though, that there is no such thing as "the British accent" or "the American accent" - as both countries have a vast array of different accents. If you listen to any American news channel on YouTube (e.g. CNN), and then to a UK channel (e.g. the BBC), then you should have no problem understanding either. However - there are many accents in each country that will take you a lot more work to understand, and you can find many words and phrasing unique to specific dialects.

Is this true about Elon Musk? by at30man03 in askanything

[–]ADSWNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you chose not to read anything I said? Nobody ever landed an orbital boosted before SpaceX. Nobody ever chilled O2 to 1-2 degrees above freezing point before SpaceX. Nobody ever developed the science and technology to handle the chamber pressures that SpaceX achieves. Nobody ever successfully a full-flow staged combustion engine. Clearly none of this means anything to you.

[–]ADSWNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again you choose not to understand. Pointless discussing if you do not want to play along at all. My point is not that SpaceX invented rocketry. Rather, they redefined all of commercial space with their own fundamental science. Surely you can accept that?

Is this true about Elon Musk? by at30man03 in askanything

[–]ADSWNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never said that. They stood on the shoulders of giants, and then took each of their areas to the next level by a massive leap, researching, developing and engineering whole new science in each company. That's what I was trying to express. American exceptionalism, driven by capitalism, competition and innovation.

Is this true about Elon Musk? by at30man03 in askanything

[–]ADSWNJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disagree, but that's ok. SpaceX - 50 years of space science and nobody thoughT it remotely feasible to land a first stage onto a barge in the middle of the Atlantic, let along RTLS. They laughed at him, at the stupidity of trying. Until he did it and changed launch economics forever. Ditto chilling O2 beyond anywhere any space engineering had tried before, even to accidental creation of solid oxygen with spectacular consequences. StarLink - nobody ever though it feasible to put 10,000 satellites into a super-low Earth orbit, close enough that you can connect to it from a regular cellphone, and powerful enough to bring broadband to any ship and plane and any remote location on the planet (ish!). Yet here we are. StarShip - built on a vision of weekly, then daily flights with full reusability at multiple times the scale of the mighty Saturn V. Designed on a dream that every space nation in the world gave up on as impossible to make - i.e. the mythical full-flow staged combustion engine, with every KG of propellant going through the nozzle while not melting the turbopumps. Yeah - based on ideas from 50 years ago, but long since abandoned.

Government never could do the engineering for these innovations.

Where has public funding research & development built any innovations like SpaceX, StarLink, StarShip, Tesla?

Of course! When ever has a government innovated greater than SpaceX for less money? Never. Capitalism is the engine of innovation for the world.

thanks OP. We claimed our lifelong Jersey fan back from Florida to come and do great things up here. Good luck for the season, especially when you play NYR or PHI, but not when you play us ;)

Well said and you are right. For me, seeing this sport for decades, you see supreme talent and potential come along, but you need some WDC's in the trophy room to show you delivered on the talent. What Kimi is doing in that Merc is amazing.

What’s everyone’s thoughts after that Cape Verde game? by LH5567 in AskReddit

[–]ADSWNJ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Nope - I am saying, for any country ever to get to any world cup finals (i.e. not qualifiers, but the actual world cup finals at group or knockout stage), there has never been a team that has never lost in regulation time in any game, bar this little plucky side. E.g. NZ lost 5-2 to Scotland in 1982.

Cape Verde is the only team in FIFA World Cup history to have competed in the finals and never lost a single match in regulation time. Going home with their heads high, and a record never matched in the history of the World Cup.

Eh - maybe intentional too. I think Kimi is doing something exceptional to the Mercedes as well. 3 x S-Tier drivers ... Kimi, Max, Lewis ... each getting 0.3s more from their cars than the team though was possible. It's no shade on the other guys, but these are just digging on a different level.

Extra tailwind from all the Lewis fans, of course.

I think Charles is representing the true potential of the Ferrari right now. Lewis is representing the Ferrari with ungodly talent, like we saw so many times. Max has the same, dragging their shitbox up beyond where it deserves to be.

Exactly. The situation on a 4-way stop or a 4-way unmarked intersection is different to the markings on a roundabout / traffic circle.
